People in the news Dear Abby's face red over ruse LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) Advice columnist Abigail Van Buren thought “Noisemaker” was serious when he complained that his stomach growled when he kissed his girlfriend. But hundreds of readers sent “Dear Abby” proof that the joke was on her. “My stomach makes a terrible growling noise whenever I kiss my girlfriend,” read the letter, published in the syndicated column Jan. 15. “She tells me it’s all in my head, but my stomach tells me to write to you. Signed, Noisemaker.” . Astute readers remembered folk singer John Prine’s parody tune, “Dear Abby,” a stanza of which went: “Dear Abby, Dear Abby: You won’t believe this. My stomach makes noises whenever I kiss. My girlfriend tells me it’s all in my head. But my stomach tells me to write you instead. Signed, Noisemaker.” Abby’s readers weren’t shy in informing her that she’d been tricked. “I got hundreds of letters from readers,” said Ms. Van Buren. “They sent me the cassettes, the lyrics, everything.” Ms. Van Buren said that no one in her office had spotted Noisemaker’s letter for a phony. “But once we started getting letters, I said, ‘Oh, wow! Now I remember!”’ By the way, she advised Noisemaker to calm down and never kiss on an empty stomach. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Singer Peggy Lee is resting at home in exclusive Bel-Air following surgery to open constricted arteries but is “champing at the bit” to get back to work, her publicist says. The 63-year-old pop and jazz artist underwent the surgery Jan. 23 at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica and went home Saturday, publicist Gino Empry said Tuesday. The coronary angioplasty operation, in which inflatable catheters were used to open narrowed arteries, made heart bypass surgery unnecessary, he said by telephone from Toronto. “She’s resting at home, but she’s champing at the bit because she wants to get back to work,” Empry said. LOS ANGELES (AP) —O. '-winning actor Jack Lemmon will host the Academy Awards program in March, says the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “Jack’s untiring energy, zest for living and imaginative talents have won respect and approval of everyone in the film community,” said academy president Gene Allen. “We’re delighted he’s with us.” The academy also plans to name 10 co-hosts for the show, scheduled for March 25 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Los Angeles Music Center. Lemmon, 59, has been nominated eight times. He won an Oscar for best supporting performance in “Mr. Roberts” in 1955 and another for best actor in 1973 for “Save the Tiger.”

ABIGAIL VAN BUREN LEEIACOCCA Now I remember!' Engaged to marry DETROIT (AP) Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee lacocca is engaged to marry Peggy Johnson, a New York advertising executive, a company spokesman confirms. “Mr. lacocca gave Miss Johnson a ring for Christmas. They have not set a date,” Chrysler vice president of public affairs James L. Tolley said Tuesday. The spokesman said he did not know anything else about Miss Johnson or the engagement. However, the Detroit Free Press quoted unidentified friends of lacocca who said Miss Johnson is 33 and that she met lacocca, 60, during work on the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial Commission, which he heads. lacocca’s wife Mary died in 1983 of complications from diabetes and heart disease. He has two daughters: Lia, 20, and Kathi, 25. FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) The mayor of Bruce Springsteen’s hometown has written the rock star to tell him that a street with his name on it is his for the asking. The town’s council has discussed various ways of honoring Springsteen, including a parade, presenting him with the key to Freehold or changing the name of South Street to Bruce Springsteen Boulevard. A letter sent to Springsteen’s agent earlier this month didn’t get a response, so the council decided Monday that Mayor John McGackin should write directly to him. “The main thing is if he would be in favor of having something or whether he doesn’t want it,” town Clerk Vivian Taylor said Tuesday. Springsteen, 35, grew up in Freehold and has an aunt who lives there, she said. UNITED NATIONS (AP) Rock singer Tina Turner has stated that she’ll never perform in racially segregated South Africa, says the U.N. Center Against Apartheid. In a written pledge Jan. 15, the 43-year-old black singer said she had “turned down several lucrative offers to perform in South Africa.” The center maintains a register of entertainers who have performed in South Africa as part of a U.N. campaign for a cultural boycott of that country. The latest list, published in December, contains the names of 388 performers, including 103 Americans.
