CLARK KELLOGG Nets 24 in loss Wilkins plays like all-star NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Atlanta Coach Michael Fratello says Dominique Wilkins’ 40-point output in the Hawks 115-106 National Basketball Association victory over the Indiana Pacers should help give him more recognition. “In his own quiet way, maybe he was trying to say that in the future, he should be considered higher in the All-Star situation,” Fratello said after Tuesday night’s game. Wilkins was not named to the NBA AllStar team. “I came out tonight not so much to score 40 points but to show people that I deserved to be on the All-Star team,” said Wilkins. The first half was close all the way, with the Pacers in front 54-53 at halftime. The Pacers pushed ahead in the third period, opening a 62-57 lead before Wilkins scored 11 of Atlanta’s first 15 points in the second half, putting the Hawks on top 68-66 with 5:20 remaining in the period. From there, Atlanta stayed in front the rest of the way. The Hawks put the game out of reach by taking a 111-102 lead with just over one minute to go. Bird wins another for Celtics at buzzer

By The Associated Press The play was simply indescribable, as Larry Bird himself said. “I don’t want to describe the play,” Bird said, “... we might have to use it again.” On Tuesday night, the Boston Celtics used the mystery play to beat the Detroit Pistons, 131-130, on Bird’s basket at the buzzer. The loss snapped an eight-game Detroit winning streak, one short of the team record set in 1970. The winning maneuver began with four seconds left as Bird took a short inbounds pass from Dennis Johnson at halfcourt. Bird drove along the side, cut toward the basket, fended off Detroit center Kent Benson near the lane and threw the ball toward the hoop from about five feet away. “As you could tell ... I got the ball, we won,” Bird said. “I was hoping I was going to get it. It’s just like we know all Detroit’s plays. Still, we’ve got to stop them. ” “It is a tough way to lose, especially when you have the chance to win,” Detroit guard Isiah Thomas said. “You never know until the game is over. I said to Bird, ‘Nice shot.’ And he smiled back.” Bird finished with 32 points, and Thomas
