A sound bidder constantly tries to select the bid that will best reflect the strength and -character of his hand. The aim is to make it easy for partner to choose the right contract after you’ve told him what you have. Consequently, it would be improper to bid only two notrump here. Partner already knows you have diamonds and spades, but he doesn’t know you have 17 highcard points (instead of perhaps 13 or 14) and that you have 5-4-2-2 distribution (instead of say 5-5-2-1 or 6-5-1-1). The jump to three notrump is bound to clear up the mystery of the kind of hand you actually have. 2. Three clubs. Here you’re faced with a different type of hand, so you send a different type of message. The distribution is unbalanced and you

therefore don’t bid notrump. Furthermore, you have a minimum opening bid and you therefore don’t jump the bidding. Three clubs adequately represents the shortage in hearts, since you’ve already bid three suits. The picture you’ve drawn is now complete. The rest is up to partner. 3. Three spades. Here is still another type of hand. This time you can’t support clubs, because you haven’t any, and you don’t support hearts, because you have only three of them and partner apparently has a four-card suit. Your spades are almost selfsufficient, even opposite a singleton or a void, and the jump to three spades is fully justified by the 16 high-card points. If you were to bid only two spades, partner might think you had only 12 or 13. 4. Three diamonds. This is the most illuminating call possible. By bidding three diamonds you show five of them, and by inference five spades. This is because you would surely have started with a diamond, holding four spades and five diamonds. At the same time, your extra high-card values are well represented, because on a weaker hand with 5-5 distribution you would bid two spades to show minimum values.

T '■'YOUR DAILY Horoscope from the Carroll Righter Institute
FORECAST FOR WEDNESDAY, JAM. 30, 1985 GENERAL TENDENCIES: The day can be unusually beneficial and filled with action in whatever you have any line of interest that is of a practical or monetary nature. Seek advice of businessmen. ARIES (Mar. 21 to Apr. 19) Be certain to handle financial affairs that are important and show you are sensible, then later you can socialize. TAURUS (Apr. 20 to May 20) First do something to improve your health and then go after the personal and business aims that mean much to you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 21) Set pace with a new campaign you have worked out that will take you straight to your goals and you attain them. MOON CHILDREN (June 22 to Jul. 21) Confide your aims in a good friend and gain cooperation so they are easier to attain. Weigh a decision carefully. LEO (Jul. 22 to Aug. 21) Get your outside business affairs handled in such a way that you can get ahead very quickly during daytime. VIRGO (Aug. 22 to Sept. 22) You gain fine new ideas that should be improved with the advice of bigwigs, so be sure to see to them. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Get your obligations nicely met during the day and then off to new sites in the evening. Meet interesting personalities then. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) The spirit of compromise is best with that person who is as stubborn as you. Come to a fine agreement quickly. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Get into your work duties enthusiastically early and they are soon behind you. Socialize in the evening. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) You can enjoy recreation during the day, and then can do your work in the evening for a change. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) Get into all those fundamental affairs that can improve your way of life during the day. Relax tonight. PISCES (Feb. 20 to Mar. 20) You can gad about and get much done during the day, as well as get into new interests. Spend time at home this evening. IF YOUR CHILD IS BORN TODAY ... he or she will easily understand whatever has to do with money and other practical matters and it would be best to give courses in business administration. Add psychology to the curriculum also so that others can be understood. * * ♦ “The Stars impel; they do not compel.” What you make of your life is largely up to you! © 1985, The McNaught Syndicate, Inc.
