VDTsmay cause angina MONTEREY, Calif. < AP) Nearly 20 percent of female telephone company workers in North Carolina suffered angina after putting in more than four hours at video display terminals, about 10 times the normal rate, a researcher says. VDT users also suffered more eye, back and neck strain, headaches, fatigue and tension than non-users, said Suzanne G. Haynes, chief of medical statistics for the National Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, Md. Ms. Haynes, who studied North Carolina telephone operators and service representatives between late 1983 and August 1984, found that 19.1 percent of 278 VDT users reported angina symptoms after more than four hours of work. Only 10.1 percent of 218 nonusers complained of the heart pains. Angina is chest pain caused by an inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart, often related to constriction of the coronary arteries, and is treated with nitroglycerin, which opens arteries to allow better blood flow. The condition may have occurred because workers who use the television screen-and-keyboard setup used for word processing and computers often are under pressure to increase productivity through long hours without adequate breaks, in close quarters and with little human contact, Ms. Haynes said Wednesday at an American Heart Association forum for science writers.. She said that while there is a connection between VDT use and angina among telephone workers, she could not prove that their use caused the pains. “More research needs to be done on the use of VDTs. No one epidemiological study can identify something as being cause and effect,” she said. An AHA spokesman said there are no good figures for the prevalence of angina in the general population, but Ms. Haynes said she believes about 2 percent to 3 percent of Americans suffer the ailment. Officials of Southern Bell and AT&T Communications said they had not heard of the study, which Ms. Haynes conducted with the help of the Communications Workers of America while she was an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Until we had an opportunity to see the study and examine the details, there would be no way we could appropriately comment on it,” Southern Bell spokesman Ladd Baucom said from Charlotte, N.C. “Thus far, we have no evidence of any medical effects of video display terminals, but of course anything concerning our employees’ health is of concern to us,” said AT&T Communications spokeswoman Nina Wood from Bedminster, N.J.

Aspirin companies add Reyes Syndrome warning
WASHINGTON (AP) - The manufacturer of St. Joseph aspirin says it will cooperate with a government request to label its product with a warning of a possible link with Reye’s Syndrome, but other aspirin companies are putting off a decision while they review the evidence.
