Greater religion theme for second inauguration

By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer Religious elements are to play a bigger part in the inauguration of President Reagan this time, with the sequence of formalities sprinkled with reverence and worship. Evangelist Billy Graham, a long-time friend of Reagan’s and an occasional overnight guest at the White House, is to preach the main sermon for the event at an ecumenical service Sunday morning. That takes place at the Washington Cathedral, an Episcopal center, where about 2,800 mostly invited guests are to participate, along with Reagan, Vice President George Bush, their wives, Cabinet officers and members of Congress. “0 Lord, our governor, whose glory is in all the world, we commend this nation to thy merciful care, that being guided by thy providence, we may dwell secure in thy peace,” goes a prayer for the service to be led by Washington’s Episcopal Bishop JohnT. Walker. “Grant to our president, Ronald, and to our vice president, George, wisdom and strength to know and to do they will. Fill them with the love of truth and righteousness, and make them ever mindful of their calling to serve this people in thy fear.” That hour-long service of robed processions, Scripture readings, hymns, the cathedral’s orchestra and male choir, the Howard University Chorale and a U.S. Marine brass ensemble is just part the religious aspects of the inaugural. At Reagan’s swearing-in ceremony four years ago, only one minister, the Rev.

Mary K. Jenkins re-elected by Methodist Women Mrs. Mary K. Jenkins, a member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church in Greencastle, has been re-elected Secretary for Financial Interpretation of the South Indiana Conference of United Methodist Women. Her second year in the office began this month. Mrs. Jenkins is local president of United Methodist Women, a kindergarten Sunday school teacher and reserve lay member to the Annual Conference. She is an active member of Church Women United and is on the nominating committee for the Lucille Raines Residence in Indianapolis. She resides with her husband, Charles, and daughter, Debbie, in Greencastle. Cloverdale area ministers choose officers Rev Chris Christopher, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Cloverdale, has been elected 1985 president of the Greater Cloverdale Ministerial Association. The association, which meets for a prayer breakfast on the first Saturday morning of each month, elected officers during their Jan. 5 meeting at the Colonial House. Rev Herb Morris, pastor of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, was elected vice president and Rev. Gary Shaar, pastor of Cloverdale United Methodist Church will serve as treasurer Rev. Robert Nees, pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, was elected treasurer. In 1584, the Gregorian calendar was adooted by the Roman Catholic states of & Holy Roman Empire.

more than 75 years of experience in Christian music. They have performed in several states throughout the Midwest, including frequent appearances at The Little Nashville Opry in Nashville, Ind. New Providence Baptist Church is located 216 miles south of Mt. Meridian.

Donn D. Moomaw, pastor of the Belair Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, of sered a prayer, but this time, an ecumenical foursome are to do so. Before, “it was one man all across the board, but this time we’re spreading it around.” says a White House press spokesman, Tucker Eskew. “It was something the president wanted done.” Before that public swearing-in at noon on Monday, Reagan, who has blamed security requirements for his recent irregular church-going, is to attend a Monday morning prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church. That church on Lafayette Park near the White House is led by the Rev. John C. Harper. Shortly afterward at the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, the invocation is to be given by the Rev. Timothy S. Healy, a Roman Catholic and president of Georgetown University, with other prayers by Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk, president of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and Moomaw. The Rev. Peter J. Gomes, a Baptist and chaplain at Harvard University, is to offer the benediction. However, the main religious feature of the inaugural activities comes at the Washington Cathedral service where Protestant, Jewish and Roman Catholic ministers also take part. The occasion has been titled, “A national prayer service in thanksgiving for the 50th presidential inaugural,” which opens with a processional hymn, “God of Our Fathers.”

Sell two churches in path of coal mining?

ST. JOHN, Ind. (AP) his price, should a congregation? How can a family calculate the value of its church? Those questions face two rural churches that are in the path of progress for AMAX Coal Co.’s Ayrshire mine. For more than 100 years, worshipers have attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Zoar United Church of Christ south of Elberfeld in Warrick County. Last month, AMAX offered to buy both churches. The huge dragline has cut into the congregations as well as the land once owned by their members. Many families have relocated and now attend other churches. But some return for Sunday services. At St. John, parishioners are evenly divided about whether to sell, according to Mary Effinger. She and three others serve on a committee formed by their priest to work with Bishop Francis Shea, the head of the Catholic Diocese of Evansville. The final decision on whether to sell the 90-year-old church will rest with Shea. Zoar Church Council President Doris Godeke said her congregation has not even discussed AMAX’s Dec. 28 offer. She expects debate to begin at the annual congregational meeting Jan. 20. “No one ever thought (AMAX) would try to do something with the churches,” Mrs. Godeke said. “With the two churches so close together, we’d thought they’d never make an offer and would just go around us.”

The two churches are less than a mile apart and about six miles south of Elberfeld. The Catholic congregation is debating whether an offer to buy should simply reflect the actual market value of the property when it means so much more than money to many of the members. More than half of the parishioners are descended from the original German immigrants who founded the church in 1868. The brick church has been the setting for family histories played out in baptisms, weddings and funerals. Their ancestors chose the cemetery next to the church for their final resting place. Negotiations for both churches have included guarantees that the cemeteries would be undisturbed. But that’s not enouh for some church members. “There’s people who say you shouldn’t sell your church at any price,” Mrs. Es-

finger said. But I say you should sell if you get your price.” Mrs. Effinger, who moved to the parish in 1918, worries that mining and blasting will damage the church. Mortar and bricks used in 1895 are not as sturdy as modern construction, said the 71-year-old parishioner. Carl F. Wagner, the committee’s chairman, was born in the parish 77 years ago. Six generations of his family have worshipped at St. John. “Some parishioners are not interested in selling at any price,” Wagner said. “They say why should we start with a whole new set of buildings?” A church, rectory, school, convent and cemetery sit on the parish’s six acres. The parish owns another four acres about onefourth mile east of the church. “The building is too old not to consider a good offer,” Mrs. Effinger said. “We have

to face reality.” Mrs. Effinger said many people argue for the sentimental value of the church and the community that once surrounded it. “They say it’s the idea that it is St. John’s but there’s nothing left of St. John’s. There’s nothing but a wilderness here,” she said. Like their Catholic neighbors, Mrs. Godeke said her 84-member congregation has deep roots. The Protestant church was also started by German immigrants in 1857. Mrs. Godeke fears that the debate over whether to sell the church and parsonage will splinter her congregation. Last year, she said the congregation voted down ah offer by AMAX to buy just the parsonage.Older members of both congregations are most adamant about not selling, the lay people said. For them, the churches are the last remnants of the community where they grew up. Elmer Fehd, 68, has refused to sell AMAX any part of the family farm once owned by his grandfather. He grew up on the farm and at Zoar United Church of Christ. “I got my grandparents on my mother’s side in two graves there,” Fehd said of the Zoar cemetery. “In the next two south are my grandparents on my father’s side. And my daddy and mother are there. Some people don’t think of that.”
