Purdue loses, IU wins

By The Associated Press It was the Late Late Show in the Big Ten, as basketball fans got their money’s worth with a pair of overtime contests. N 0.17 Michigan State grabbed sole possession of first place in the conference with an 81-72 overtime victory Thursday night against Purdue, while 15th-ranked Illinois climbed out of the league cellar by beating Michigan 64-58, also in extended play Also Thursday night, llth-ranked Indiana ripped Northwestern 77-50. At West Lafayette, Ind., the MSU victory, sparked by Sam Vincent’s 39 points, left Coach Jud Heathcote shaking his head almost in disbelief. “I’m not sure whether we won this one or stole it,” said Heathcote. “We were down with a minute to go and suddenly Sam put us back in it. Then we played well in the overtime. It was a big win for us.” Vincent got Michigan State’s final seven points of regulation play and eight of the first 11 points in the extra period, lifting the Spartins to 3-0 in the Big Ten and 12-1

It was an end to a three-game Illini losing streak, including the team’s first two Big Ten games. Henson said the overtime win made him feel “about6oyears old.” Forward Anthony Welch hit three shots in the final two minutes of ther extra period, including a 15-foot jump shot with 45 seconds left to break a 58-58 tie and a slam dunk for the game’s final bucket. “We felt good about the game for a number of reasons,” said Henson. “We gutted it out again. Our defense bailed us out ... and we did well on the boards. We need to smooth out our offense a little,” said Henson. The Illini, picked by many to finish on top of the Big Ten, are now 12-4 overall and 2-J in the league. Michigan is now 9-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.

ISU wins close one By The Associated Press Indiana State’s best start in five years has produced a 9-3 record, and Coach Dave Schellhase said Thursday night’s 73-70 victory over Drake was an example of why the Sycamores have been successful. “We’ve got to win the close ones," said Schellhase, who got 22 points from John Sherman Williams and 18 points from Johnny Edwards in the Missouri Valley Conference matchup. “I was very pleased with our style of play.” Edwards made a steal and a layup with 12 seconds to go, sealing Indiana State’s victory. Shellhase said he “played a heck of a game.” The victory boosted Indiana State’s record to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Drake, led by Lloyd with 27 points, slipped to 0-3 in the conference and 8-6 overall.
