Pastor's 18-wheel chapel meets needs of truckers
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) - The Rev. John Ritchey steers the nation’s truckers toward the Lord with gospel music and an 18-wheel chapel complete with hardwood pews, a donation box and citizens band radio. From the California coast to the rolling hills of his native Bedford, Pa., Ritchey, 25, ministers to the spiritual needs of a roving flock as the Assemblies of God chaplain assigned to the trucking industry. He says his truck-borne chapel is traditional. “We even have red carpeting,” Ritcheysaid after Sunday services in Battle Creek. “It can hold 27 truckers or 200 kids whoever comes first.” The chapel on wheels, a 1970 Ford rig pulling a Great Dane trailer decorated with two amber crosses on the front and inspirational messages on the back, stands out at rest stops and on highways as a symbol of peace to people who earn their living on the road, Ritchey said. One of the messages on the back doors is “In God We Trust,” painted above a sketch of World War II Marines raising the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima. The other door is inscribed with the words, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” As he and his wife drive from truck stop to truck stop, Ritchey converses with his
Stand with fellow bishops in Nicaragua: Archbishop
WASHINGTON (AP) Back from a visit to Nicaragua, a representative of U. S. Catholic bishops says they must “stand with” fellow bishops in Nicaragua “even as we also continue to criticize” aspects of U.S. policy there. Archbishop John R. Roach of St. PaulMinneapolis, the immediate past president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, says the Nicaraguan bishops face “significant pressure and tension.” He says in extensive meetings, Archbishop Obando of Managua recounted “tactics of harassment” of bishops by the government. Roach also says U.S. missionaries voiced “concerns about the Baptists delay NCC-WCC vote PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The American Bapist Churches have decided to postpone for four years a controversial vote on whether to continue membership in the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches. The delay was voted 152-22 by the general board of the 1.6 million denomination to allow time for it to monitor changes projected for both councils and for broader discussion on the matter in Baptist congregations. The issue came to a head last year as a result of charges in the Readers’ and on a CBS show, “60 Minutes,” that the councils were supporting leftist revolutionary groups. The Baptist board said it will advocate strenthening the national council’s evangelism program and offer critiques on major policy statements by the councils in relation to Baptist positions
The Bible Is God’s Revelation The God who created this world chose to communicate with man. The Bible is the God's revelation to man. The writers of the Bible claimed to be writing what God revealed to them, not their own thoughts and ideas about God. To say that the Bible is inspired of God is only to claim for the Bible what it claims for itself. Paul wrote, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Peter added, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (2 Pet. 121). The Old Testament contains some statement similar to "the word of God came to me saying. .” about 3800 times. The doctrine that what is in the Bible is the word of God is not based on some isolated verse which might be subject to various interpretations. The doctrine pervades the entire Bible. The Bible claims to be a direct revelation from God. We believe that the Bible's claim for itself is true. We be ieve the Bible and preach the Bible. We do not believe that its truths are outdated or outmoded. We believe that its code of ethics is binding on men today. We believe that the bible is relevant to man's spiritual needs today. Will you come |Oin us in the study of God's divine revelation to us? congregation on CB radio, answering to the handle “Padre.” “So many truckers we meet are on the verge of disaster,” said Ritchey. “They need answers to life’s problems. And I help them find those answers through the word of God.” Ritchey also gives them a chance to get away from the never-changing rest stop world of diesel pumps, video games and short-order restaurants. A trucker who steps aboard Ritchey’s rig enters a bona fide church, with one obvious difference: This chapel is very, very narrow. The minister has equipped his chapel with wood paneling, hardwood pews, an American flag, a donation box and an amplification system from which he broadcasts recordings of gospel music. Truckers who stop in are also shown a 15-minute film on safe truck driving. Ritchey said he and his wife, Heidi, normally take to the road in three-week stretches. Their parsonage is over the fifth wheel, affectionately called “the bunk house.” “We live in here,” Mrs. Ritchey said, pointing to the door behind the pulpit. “We have water and a shower at least we did until (the shower) broke. We’ve been roughing it.
impact of U.S. policy” there. The U.S. bishops have opposed U.S. aid to guerrillas trying to overthrow the Nicaraguan government. Roach, sent on the mission by the current president of the bishops, Bishop James Malone of Youngstown, Ohio, says a “pattern of harassment” of the Nicaraguan church remains an “abiding concern” of U.S. bishops. At the same time, he says, they still object to “aspects of U.S. policy” which they see as “counterproductive as a means of protecting human rights in Nicaragua and fostering a climate of justice and peace in Central America.”

'Sense of sin' largely lost John Paul cites trends that have deadened people's moral conscience
By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer Truth often comes wrapped in paradoxes, with what’s real depending on its apparent opposite, the philosophers say. This oddity is noted particularly in that old streak in humanity called “sin.” It would seem to be strictly a drawback, a failure of charater, but strangely, as theologians see it, not to recognize it in oneself is to deny even being human. That peculiarity of the “mystery of sin” is explored extensively by Pope John Paul II in his recent 25,000-word “apostolic exhortation” about it, contending that the modern world has largely lost a “sense of sin.” But “sin is a product of man’s freedom,” he points out, and for people to deny sin and responsibility for it is to deny free will, which “would be to deny the person’s dignity and freedom.” “The restoration of a proper sense of sin is the first way of facing the grave spiritual crisis looming over man today,” he says. While most of the news reports and discussions of the document issued last month have focused on its call for rejuvenating the use of individual penance, the pope also deals at length with the puzzling nature of sin.

The pope says it’sat the root of powerful conflicts that make this “a world shattered to its very foundations” the trampling of basic rights, violence, terrorism, the arms race and yawning gap between rich and poor. Yet paradoxically, the pope says, there also is a “fundamental, driving force in society” that seeks to “mend the divisions, to heal the wounds” and build “essential unity and peace” a reconciliation that can only come by recognizing the “wound at the root of all other wounds: namely sin.” Basically, the pope says the prime mortal sin a rejection of God as the “supreme end of man” also implicitly rejects the “divine seed” in human beings, thereby downgrading human life itself. In one way, John Paul says, “every sin is personal,” but in a paradoxical way, “every sin is social” since it has social effects.

It is “always a personal act” no matter how much an individual may be “conditioned, incited and influenced” by powerful external factors, he says, and blame for it can’t be put on such things as systems and institutions. This “would be to deny the person’s dignity and freedom, which are manifested even though in a negative and disastrous way also in responsibility for sins committed,” he says. Always, however, “each individual’s sin in some way affects others,” he adds. “There is no sin, not even the most intimate and secret one, the most strictly individual one, that exclusively concerns the person committing it. “With greater or lesser violence, with greater or lesser harm, every sin has repercussions on ... the whole human family.” Nevertheless, the ambiguous meaning sometimes given “social sin” leads to “watering down and almost the

abolition of personal sin, with recognition only of social guilt and responsibility.” John Paul says this “weakening of the sense of sin in the modem world” has stemmed from a “numbing or “deadening” of people’s “moral con science,” planted in them and linked to their inherent “sense of God” The pope cites various trends as bringing about this “crisis of conscience,” including: “Secularism ... which advocates a humanism totally without God ... caught up in the heady enthusiasm of con sumerism and pleasure-seeking, unconcerned with the danger of ‘losing one’s soul’.” Modern pscychological methods that “avoid creating feelings of guilt, thereby placing “limits on freedom” to the point of refusing to recognize any responsibility for shortcomings. Sociological criteria that blame any faults on families, society or systems, with the individual “declared innocent,” and also a cultural anthropology that empahsizes environmental or historical con ditioning as causes of the problems. This reduces a person’s “responsibility to the point of not acknowledging his ability to perform truly human acts and therefore his ability to sin.”
