'ABC Theater' to mark 50th effort
By JERRY KRUPNICK c. 1985 N.Y. Times News Service LOS ANGELES dozen years, ABC television has aired several excellent and distinguished dramatic productions, at the same time it has been dishing out the likes of “The Love Boat” and “Three’s Company.” It’s as if these specials were the conscience of the network, the other side of a glittering commercial television coin which, at first flip, has no noticeable redeeming value. Of course, there were other decent ABC programs on the air during those 12 years. But not many of the worthwhile series survived and too many of the made-for-TV movies were the very definition of supertrash. Nonetheless, whenever it came to toting up the season, these “ABC Theater” presentations were always among the quality contributions of the year. Among the previous telecasts have been “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” “Pueblo,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “Judgement: The Trial of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg,” “Missiles of October,” “Ceremonies in Dark Old Men,” “Love Among the Ruins,” “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” “Eleanor and Franklin” and ‘‘The Gathering.” Then there was the mostwatched television drama in history, “The Day After.” Earlier this week, the network held an unusual party for all of these productions and the others that have been along throughout those dozen years. The occasion was the forthcoming arrival next month of two more “ABC Theater” dramas. Mario Thomas and Martin Sheen will be along on Monday, Feb. 4, with “Consenting Adult,” a strong drama dealing with homosexuality. This will

be the 50th offering of “ABC Theater.” On Sunday, Feb. 10, “ABC Theater” will air “Surviving,” with Ellen Burstyn, Marsha Mason, Len Cariou and Paul Sorvino as parents of two teenagers who commit suicide. To mark that golden anniversary and to salute the actors and actresses who made “ABC Theater” the repository of more Emmy Awards than any other single television project, the network asked everybody concerned to come out and mingle. A surprising number of the stars obliged for the occasion. There were Carol Burnett and Ned Beatty, for instance, who were so startlingly and shockingly superb as the persistent parents of a young soldier killed in Vietnam by what the government reluctantly admitted was “Friendly Fire.” And there was Ted Danson, who displayed a sensitivity far beyond his barkeep persona in “Cheers,” as the guilty father in “Something About Amelia.” There was Lee Remick, who was the radiant star of three “ABC Theater” offerings: “Breaking Up,” “The Women’s Room” and “The Letter.” And there was Sam Waterston, who was so supportive in “Friendly Fire.” Viveca Lindfers, who is always a stirring actress, told us her role in “Divorce Wars” was “just this big,” but she still was pleased to be in this company. And Charles Durning, memorable as the harrassed warden in “Attica,” told us how proud he was of the many roles he has had on television, as well as the big screen and the Broadway stage. “An actor has to act, no matter what the medium,” he said. “Look around this room and you’ll see some of America’s great ones.”
