Film, TV roles create comeback for'SNL' original Garrett Morris
c. 1985 N.Y. Times News Service NEW ORLEANS The phone rang at the residence of Garrett Morris, cast member from the original “Saturday Night Live.” “Juvenile hall,” answered Morris. Impression No. 1: This is not a man who wants to be taken seriously. Unlike Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner and Jane Curtin, other “Saturday Night” originals, Morris didn’t get any gonzo movie deals when his television stint ended in 1980. He didn’t get any gonzo TV deals, either. Frankly, besides a pink slip, he didn’t get much of anything.' Save for some bit parts in a TV series here and there, and stage work on the coasts, Morris has all but disappeared from the public eye. “I haven’t been totally out of work,” he says. “I’ve been a semi-regular on the Jeffersons, for instance.” But he wasn’t exactly thriving, either. Instead of jumping from New York, where Saturday Night Live was broadcast weekly, to Hollywood, Morris came home to New Orleans and got married. He tried some offBroadway plays, some more plays in Los Angeles, and in between toured the nation’s campuses as a standup comic. “Not that I’m a comedian, you understand,” says Morris. “It’s just that ever since ‘Saturday Night Live’ that name has been applied to me so many times that I figured I might as well make some money off it.” Impression No. 2: This is not a man concerned with art for art’s sake. Morris says he’s done his last college tour for a while. “There’s going to be a real rush of Garrett Morris coming up,” he says. It won’t make him a star, but it could be a comeback. He was recently seen on the NBC situation comedy “It’s Your Move” as star Jason Bateman’s high school principal. That’s potentially a continuing role, he says. Morris appears in an upcoming episode of the CBS mystery series “Murder, She Wrote” in a story about a murdered jazz musician from New Orleans. He’ll also appear as a framed thief on “Hill Street Blues,” a role that lasts at least three weeks. “Let’s hope,” he says, “that it is ad infinitum.” On the big screen, he has roles upcoming in “The Stuff” and “The Census Taker.” In “The Census Taker,” due to be released

GARRETT MORRIS Very, very good roles
next winter, he plays the lead. “Sick comedy,” he says. “Do you have any idea how much liberty census takers are given? If they are zealous in their pursuit of other people’s business, they can get away with just about anything they want. Well, this guy is a low-down, nasty, dirty census taker. A very, very difficult part for me to play.” Morris laughs again. “It must be a great, great tribute to my acting ability,” he continues after the laughter subsides. “When my character finished the last day of shooting, the crew all stood up and applauded.” The big problem for Garrett Morris has been getting people to forget “Saturday Night Live.” “It was only four years ago,” he says. “How could they not remember? My career the past few years has been plagued by the fact that there aae still some sadly uncreative minds out there who see me only as a product of that show. But prior to that, I was involved for 18 to 19 years as a serious actor on Broadway. And there are still three or four people out there who take me seriously as a jazz musician. Some don’t see me as a comedian at all. They don’t know' why anybody would think I’m funny.” He laughs. “I’d have to include myself in that last group.”
