Video fever 'lt's like a disease,' VCR addicts admit as they rent and rave
c. 1985 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK said Lucy Martin Gianino, surveying the scene in the Tower Video store, filled to overflowing with customers jostling for position at the racks of movie cassettes and waiting in a long line to buy, rent and return them. As has happend to millions of others, Mrs. Gianino had a videocassette recorder come into her life on Christmas Day, a life that she said may never be quite the same. She now finds herself going out into the night among the multiplying hordes of VCR owners to forage films for her family. “The store has been a madhouse since Christmas,” said Joe Medwick, the frazzled manager of Tower Video, a glitzy chrome-and-neon store on upper Broadway that has become something of a happening. Medwick hired three more employees this week to help handle the crowds. “Some of the new VCR owners are picking up two or three films a day,” he said. “Customers,” said Robin Singer, the store’s floor manager, “are grabbing the movies off the shelf at the same time and having a tug of war. I don’t like to see adults act this way. Sometimes I take it away and give it to someone else.” Miss Singer said customers were offering her tickets to Broadway productions and hockey games to hold back the most popular films for them. One woman gave her a plate of cookies to curry favor. “They stand over here by the return line,” said John Gentile, an assistant manager, “to try and spot the good ones being turned in. It’s first come, first serve, and this is New York.” Although customers are allowed to rent up to 4 tapes at a time, some customers were snatching up 10 or 12 one evening this week, and then they went to a corner to make their decisions. Other video stores in the city report similar postholiday assaults. Some of the smaller shops have been running out of all but their least-popular titles. “Last Saturday afternoon,” said Les Richards, a customer in Tower Video, “I had my pick at a small shop in my neighborhood of Lyle Alzado’s exercise tape and ‘Gigi.’ We went home and watched ‘The Love Boat’ on regular TV.” These video stores seem to be popping up everywhere you look, and they are becoming as übiquitous as mesquite on a menu on the trendy Upper West Side.

“Here,” explained one shopper, “a VCR is essential to life.” Some of the shops are offering free delivery, free popcorn and two-for-the-price-of-one nights. “Two-for-one-nights are killers,” one customer said. “I’m always late for work the next day. ” Before the early evening crush, customers roamed the aisles, picking tape boxes the size of hard-cover and paperback books from the shelves marked Fitness, Culture, Foreign, Musicals, Classics, Performing Arts, Comedy, Nostalgia, Family, Horror, Science Fiction, Action Adventure, Drama, and Special Interest. “You’re not getting Burt Reynolds!” shrieked a woman at her male companion. “Not Burt Reynolds!” The woman, Donna Garrett, said that she had .recently stopped seeing a man because their tastes in videocassette films were incompatible. Roberto Santana, a clerk, said that some customers were indeed embarrassed by their selections, particularly those picking up X-rated films. “Sometimes they slip you those on a piece of paper,” Santana said, “and then you yell out really loudly: ‘Hey Joe! This guy wants the film ‘Orgasm.’ We got it?” Others complained of problems adjusting to their new lives as VCR owners. “My boyfriend does notting else but tape and watch,” said a woman in the store. “I scream at him. I told him I did not move to Manhattan to sit at home and watch television. He’s cheap. I think one of us has got to go, me or the VCR.” Among the toughest films to obtain this week were all films by Woody Allen, such big box-office hits as “Terms of Endearment” and “The Big Chill” and such cult films as “The Road Warrior” and “Repo Man.” “Some people will rent anything,” Miss Singer said, “either to copy it for their home libraries, which is illegal, or because they are indiscriminate viewers.” “Films people wouldn't leave their homes to see,’’explained Medwick, “they’ll take home for $2.50.” “What did you get?” said one man to another. “‘-The Philadelphia Experiment,”’ the second answered. “Why?” “Another guy was abut to get it.” “Closing time,” said Medwick, “is like closing time at a bar. People get desperate, and they’ll go home with anything.”
