substances in food are present. On the other hand, some nutrients we need may not function as well when certain medicines are taken. An understanding of those “food-drug” or “drug-nutrient” in-
teractions can help you avoid possible problems. THE MAIN ACTION OF food on medicine is to change how the drug is absorbed from the stomach or intestine. The desired effect of the drug may be lower if it does not get into the body as well. When people overuse medicines they can affect the use of certain nutrients in the body by destroying the nutrient or causing it to be excreted more rapidly. There is more concern about food and drug interactions among the elderly. As a group they take more medicine and generally do not eat as well. They are also the targets of a lot of food and nutrition misinformation. Many of the over-the-counter drugs like antacids, aspirin and laxatives are used in excessive amounts by older people. These medicines may have adverse effects on the person’s nutritional status. INTERACTIONS BETWEEN foods and medicines are usually not serious, but it helps to try and avoid possible problems. There are two simple things that will help a person avoid most problems: Read the labels on the medicine and ask questions of the doctor or the pharmacist. If these two rules are followed, you can enjoy your meals and still feel confident that your medicine is working the way it should.

By CECILY BROWNSTONE Associated Press Food Editor It’s been fascinating to watch what I call “The Zucchini Explosion.” In less than a dozen years the zucchini has become extraordinarily popular. There are now six soft-cover books devoted to zucchini recipes on my shelves.
