Deputies break in, arrest dissidents in Lutheran church
CLAIRTON, Pa. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies armed with clubs today broke into a church and arrested seven dissident church members and union leaders who had barricaded themselves inside for several weeks in a protest against “corporate evil.” Authorities said there was no resistance from those inside Trinity Lutheran Church, and Clairton Police Chief Kenneth Ujevich said none of the four men and three women arrested was injured. The occupiers were cited for contempt of court after they ignored a judge’s order to vacate the small stone church, whose congregation split after its former pastor, the Rev. D. Douglas Roth, began preaching that too little was being done to help the unemployed. Allegheny County Sheriff Eugene Coon and dozens of sheriff’s deputies wearing blue jumpsuits and armed with clubs surrounded the church around dawn. Coon pushed reporters off the church’s lawn and, using a chrome bullhorn, called out to those inside: “Those of you inside the church, do you hear me? ... You have a court order to vacate. Open the doors and come out. “This is the sheriff of Allegheny County with a court order,” Coon said. “You’re in contempt at this time. Please open the doors and come out.”
Nearly 70% believe in God's existence; only 46% attend church often
By LAWRENCE KILMAN Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) Six of 10 Americans in a Media General-Associated Press poll said they would favor a constitutional amendment to permit organized prayer in public schools, but less than half said they went to church often. The nationwide telephone survey of 1,476 Americans also said nearly seven of 10 Americans had no doubts about the existence of God. In addition, half of those surveyed said they would oppose a constitutional amendment to further restrict legal abortions. The respondents were asked, “Do you support or oppose a constitutional amendment to allow organized prayer in public schools?” and 61 percent said they would support it, 31 percent said they would oppose it and 8 percent had no opinion. Asked the same question about a constitutional amendment to further restrict legal abortions, 50 percent said they would oppose it, 35 percent said they would support it and 15 percent had no opinion. When asked how often they attended the church of their choice, 46 percent said often, 22 percent said sometimes, 26 percent said hardly ever and 5 percent said they had no church of choice. One percent didn’t answer. The respondents in the Media GeneralAP poll also were asked which of several statements came closest to their beliefs about God. Sixty-nine percent chose “I know God really exists and I have no doubts about it.” Only 3 percent chose “I don’t know whether there is a God, and I don’t believe there is any way to find out.” Twelve percent chose “While I have my Carter wins Methodist Peace Award LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. (AP) - Former U.S. President Carter has been chosen by the World Methodist Council for its international Peace Award for 1985, the first American citizen so honored. The award, given periodically by the council of Methodist and Methodist-related churches in 90 countries, is to be presented March 13 at Emory University in Atlanta by retired United Methodist Bishop William R. Cannon. The award last year went to Tai Younglee of Seoul, South Korea, a woman lawyer, for championing the cause of women and the poor. Carter, a Southern Baptist, was cited for his commitment and contributions to the goal of world peace and increased understanding among people.
There was no response from inside the church. The deputies then used a crowbar to break into a wooden rear door. Then deputies, working from inside, unchained a second, glass door. Ujevich said he and about six or eight deputies entered the church and met those inside. He said those arrested would be taken before Common Pleas Court Judge Emil Narick today. Supporters of the Roth had controlled the church since Roth was jailed Nov. 13 for refusing to step down from his pulpit. A core of hard-liners barricaded themselves inside after a judge ordered them Dec. 21 to surrender the church to the Western Pennsylvania-West Virginia Synod of the Lutheran Church in America. Roth, one of about 10 ministers calling themselves the Denominational Ministry Strategy, and his supporters claim they are following God’s command to preach against “corporate evil” on behalf of the unemployed. Roth is serving a 90-day contempt of court sentence for defying Narick’s order that he obey his bishop and step down as pastor. The church congregation was bitterly divided over Roth’s pro-labor activities.
doubts, I feel that I do believe in God”; 8 percent chose “I don’t believe in a personal God, but I do believe in a higher power of some kind”; and 5 percent chose, “I find myself believing in God some of the time, but not at other times.” Three percent didn’t answer or had no opinion. Respondents in the Media GeneralAssociated Press poll included a random, scientific sampling of 1,476 adults across the country Nov. 12-19. As with all sample surveys, the results of Media General-AP telephone polls can vary from the opinions of all Americans because of chance variation in the sample. For a poll based on about 1,400 interviews, the results are subject to an error margin of 3 percentage points either way because of chance variations in the sample. That is, if one could have questioned all Americans with telephones, there is only 1 chance in 20 that the findings would vary from the results of polls such as this one by more than 3 percentage points. Of course, the results could differ from • other polls for several additional reasons. Differences in exact wording of questions, differences in when the interviews were conducted and different methods of interviewing could also cause variations. Rev. Billy Graham:
Some 'went too far' in partisan politics
By ARI L. GOLDMAN c. 1985 N.Y. Times NEW YORK The Rev. Billy Graham said Wednesday that some of his fellow Christian ministers and evangelists “went too far” by getting involved in partisan politics in the 1984 Presidential elections. “In the political arena, I think there were pastors and evangelists who went too far, from my point of view, both from the left and from the right,” he said. He mentioned, among others, the Rev. Jerry Falwell, the head of Moral Majority, who was a strong supporter of President Reagan, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination. However, Graham said, “If that is the way they feel led to do, I’m not going to debate with them.” “My own position is that I will not get involved in partisan politics,” he said. At the same time, the 66-year-old Baptist preacher added that evangelists did have a duty to get involved in social issues. In appearances both in the United States and the Soviet Union over the last three years, Graham has made nuclear disarmament

“my No. 1 social concern." For most of the 1984 presidential campaign, Graham was traveling on what he called a worldwide Christian crusade. His stops included England, South Korea and the Soviet Union. Graham, the pre-eminent American Christian evangelist for decades, made his comments on the election in an interview Wednesday at his room at the St. Moritz Hotel on a brief visit to New York. He returned to his home in Montreat, N.C., Wednesday night. By his own count Graham has been an “intimate” of seven Presidents. His friendship with Richard M. Nixon was probably the most widely publicized. He often conducted religious services at the Nixon White House and served as an occasional adviser to Nixon. However, Graham said, intimacy with presidents should not be confused with a partisan position. “I suppose that there was a time that it was assumed because of a friendship with a President that I got involved” in partisan politics, Graham said in reference to Nixon. “But I really have never endorsed a

political candidate and do not intend to in the future.” He added that he and his wife, Ruth, had been “close family friends” of President Reagan and his wife, Nancy, for 30 years. “And yet,” he added, President Reagan and Vice President George Bush “would never expect me to take sides with them or endorse them.” “I disagree with a lot of their policies,” he said. Over the last three years Graham has set himself apart from many American evangelists by stressing the nuclear war issue. In the interview Wednesday he said he agreed with conservative evangelists that abortion should be outlawed and that prayer in the schools should be permitted. But he added, “I am more interested in the peace issue than I am in some of the other issues that evoke so much emotion.” “I doubt they’ll ever have an amendment on the abortion issue,” he added. “I doubt if they’ll ever have an amendment on the the prayer issue. I don’t think they’re going to fool with the Constitution.” In the area of nuclear war, he said, the

church had “the greatest opportunity and challenge that it has ever had. ” “More people in the world today are searching for God than at any time in human history,” he said. “They all feel this nuclear threat that hangs over them. ” Another focus for Graham in recent years has been the training of evangelists. Some 5,000 evangelists from around the world attended a conference he sponsored in Amsterdam in 1983. He said he expected twice as many at a conference in 1986 Graham, whose 12 books have sold more than 12 million copies, has just completed a new book, “Standards for the Evangelist.” In the book, he said, “I’ve tried to lift the standard of the evangelist. Sometimes the standards drop below what I think are biblical standards.” The book is about how to preach the Gospel, how to conduct finances in a responsible manner and about the limits of political involvement. Graham called the new evangelists “my successors,” but he said that he had no plans to slow down or retire. “I’m not going to quit preaching until God stops me,” he said.
