Trump plans to make it worth Flutie'stime to look at USFL
NEW YORK (AP) The scramble for the sendees of Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie has begun. While the rival National Football League draft won’t be held until April 30, the United States Football League again got a head start with its third annual selection of college players today. Under USFL rules, Boston College players belong to New Jersey, thus giving the Generals the rights to Flutie, the All-American quarterback who finished his college career Tuesday by leading the Eagles to a 4528 Cotton Bowl triumph over Houston. “I’d like to play in the NFL, but I’d have to take a look at the USFL,’’ Flutie has said. “I can’t help but think about it. My thoughts are about what my worth is. I really don’t know what the future holds for me.”
Bears after another tough QB
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Singletary, whose shrieks and ferocious play have earned him the nickname “Samurai,” is generous in praise of the man he’ll try to clobber in the National Football Conference title game Sunday. Singletary, an All-Pro inside linebacker, is the heart and brains of the Chicago Bears’ defense, the growling monster in the middle. Although he didn’t get any of the seven sacks last Sunday on Washington quarterback Joe Theismann, Singletary hopes to notch a couple against this Sunday’s target, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. “Looking at Montana, I certainly don’t feel that he’s any faster than Theismann, but his movements are more suave,” said Singletary. “He is more elusive because he knows exactly where his blocking is going to be.” Singletary, who reads signals from

Donald Trump, owner of the Generals, has said he would make every effort to sign the 5-foot-9 3 4 Flutie, who holds the NCAA total offense record of 11,054 yards and will be long remembered for his lastsecond 48-yard touchdown pass that led the Eagles past Miami (Fla.) on the day after Thanksgiving. The USFL has signed the past two Heisman Trophy winners, Herschel Walker with New Jersey and Mike Rozier with Pittsburgh. The signing of Flutie would be a boost for the new league, which plans to go head-to-head against the NFL with a fall schedule in 1986. For 1985, the aligned and reduced USFL will operate the same wintersummer schedule, but this year will have 14 teams, four less than last
defensive coach Buddy Ryan before each play and then directs his teammates, said Montana “seemingly has eyes in the back of his head sometimes and he feels pressure very well. ’ ’ The bottom line, Singletary said, is that Montana will be harder to sack than Theismann. On the 49ers’ side, says All-Pro offensive tackle Keith Fahnhorst, “The key is pass protection.” When watching the Bears’ game film, “a lot of terrible things can go through your mind. Not only do they have a defensive scheme that’s pretty hard to block against, they have great personnel,” he added. Chicago’s defense broke an NFL record by registering 72 sacks in the regular season, and the Bears ranked first in the league defensively based on yards allowed, 241 per game. “They’ve got a real physical, very aggressive type of defense, and Mike Singletary is the best inside linebacker in the league,” 49ers fullback Roger Craig said. season. In today’s draft, each team had the choice of 25 players from their territorial schools, plus a 15-round open draft of players from other schools. Birmingham, as a result of a trade with Orlando (formerly Washington), had the first choice in the open phase. Buffalo, 2-14 last season, has the No. 1 pick in the NFL. Key first-round players signed from the first round of the 1984 draft included quarterback Steve Young with Los Angeles, wide receiver Gary Clark with Jacksonville and running back Buford Jordan with New Orleans, now Portland. Thirteen players signed with the USFL after being selected in the 1984 NFL draft.
and sweat suit, sat in chilly sunshine at poolside before practice Wednesday at the training camp of last year’s Super Bowl champion, the Los Angeles Raiders, and talked about Chicago’s defensive game plan for the 49ers. “We’re going to have to have a contained rush at all times, if we’re going to be successful at all,” he said. “Pressure is what it’s all about.” One of the key things the Bears will have to do, Singletary said, is to stick tight to the 49ers’ receivers until the whistle blows. “San Francisco’s whole system is built on timing,” he said. “The receivers, along with Joe Montana, really have the timing down. Those receivers come off the line and they know just where to go, just where to turn, when the ball will be there. They make you work to cover them when Joe Montana’s scrambling.” Montana and the 49ers had a frustrating day in Chicago’s Soldier Field late in the 1983 season, losing 13-3. The Bears sacked Montana five times and intercepted two of his passes. Meyer next Colt coach? INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Ron Meyer, fired in the middle of the 1984 season by New England, says he has conferred with Indianapolis Colts general manager Jim Irsay about the team’s vacant head coaching job. Meyer said Wednesday night he is excited about being considered a possible replacement for Frank Kush. “I expect to have future talks with both Jim Irsay and his father,” Colts owner Robert Irsay, Meyer said. “I consider myself a candidate for the job.” Meyer has nearly five years experience with the National Football League. Hal Hunter, Colts’ interim coach who wants the job permanently, is in Palo Alto, Calif., this week scouting college seniors playing in the East-West all-star game Saturday.

Coaches can debate Dr. Melvin’s shrewd queries. Medically, the Miami Dolphins are handicapped in playing the Denver Broncos at Mile High Stadium! Scrapbook these cases. CASE I/-904: Dr. Melvin is a veterinarian who treats race horses. He’s one of the 3,000 doctors who wrote last fa’i for the booklet below. “Dr. Crane,” he began, "I have been vitally interested m your ideas regarding sea chemicals to prevent human ailments that are not due to any known germ or virus. “For if human tumors, like goiter, develop merely due to lack of a single trace chemical (iodine) but were banished by iodized salt, would a little sea water help produce healthier race horses? “And if race horses are in superb health, shouldn’t they be able to increase their maximum output at the Derby and other tracks! “So, do you think a little ocean water, mixed in their food or drink, might lop off a few seconds from their best former times?” GOD’S DRUGSTORE How do you readers vote on Dr. Melvin’s question? The oceans have been God’s Drugstore ever since the continents first rose up out of the seas. At that moment, the soil had the same chemicals as the oceans, so birds and animals, plas our primitive ancestors, could easily replenish the 49 soluble chemicals in their blood by either sipping sea water or via the vegetables, fruits and nut trees, whose roots drew up water from the soil.

Such water, at that time was rich in the 49 trace chemicals circulating in the blood of all animals, fowls and mankind. But repeated rains have leached the soil so badly ot its soluble sea chemicals, that a government survey of the run-off water in our American rivers, showed 20 of those 49 were missing. The others must be seriously depleted but nobody knows how much so, for we had no chemical analyses of our soil till rather recent times. Goiters were widespread in the Midwest till 1924 when we learned their cause, namely, lack of one tiny amount of iodine. Cancer researchers think it may also Ik* due to lack of one or more of those sea chemicals, and hundreds ot former dying cancel vie tims, given but 30 days to live, after surgery, deep X ray and chemotherapy had failed, now write me they are alive, well and doing their normal work, merely from drinking a little ocean water daily. So, if it benefits human beings, might it not perk up the speed of a race horse, for no ailing horse could win the derby! Read my case tomorrow about speeding up race horses and human track runners!
