People in the news 'Pinocchio'voice still a boy at heart NEW YORK When 12-year-old Dickie Jones dubbed the voice of Pinocchio for the 1940 Walt Disney classic that s making the rounds again, delighting a whole new generation of youngsters and adults alike, he was already a seasoned pro with some 40 Westerns under his Stetson. And at the same time that he was acting out the beloved puppet who wants to become a real boy, he was moonlighting in two other notable movies: the original Heaven Can Wait” and “The Adventures of Mark Twain.” Now the former child star, who was “discovered” at the age of 5 by early western idol Hoot Gibson, is a vicepresident for the nation’s second largest savings and loan I d refer to be remembered as I was then,” he says, not now just a little short guy with a receding hairline. But I still have my Screen Actors Guild membership card, and if they ever came up with a part like Pinocchio for me again, I’d jump at it. “But talking of jumping, I recently took my 4-year-old granddaughter to see the movie and she got so scared she leapt out of her seat into my lap. I don’t think she could quite understand that I was Pinocchio’s voice. “For ‘Pinocchio,’ some 100 kids tested. I had little personal contact with Disney. I just remember he took my mother and me to lunch one day, and explained he really wanted a 7-to-9-year-old voice. Then he’d visit the sound stage to see how things were going. I know people say he was a difficult man to work with, but he was just a perfectionist he simply wanted things to go right. “After all, ‘Pinocchio’ cost $2.6 million, which would be SSO million if they made it today. Maybe I’d have gotten a raise. As it was, I got SIOO a day, and I earned it. “The worst part was when they wanted to get the effect of Pinocchio speaking under water. They tried to have me speak the lines through a mouthful of water. When that didn’t work, they put me on my back and poured water on my mouth. I just nearly drowned. They ended up using a megaphone and some complicated special effects ” • BURBANK, Calif. (AP) Clarence “Ducky” Nash, better known to millions as the voice of Donald Duck, is undergoing tests after being hospitalized with a fever that kept him off a Rose Parade float dedicated to the cartoon character. Nash, 80, was in stable condition Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, said Ron Havens, administrative supervisor. Nash checked into the hospital New Year’s Eve. “He’s been traveling a lot for Donald’s 50th (anniversary), and he just overdid it,” said a spokeswoman. • ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Gov. Mario Cuomo, admitting he’s not the “most committed fan” of “The King,” has proclaimed Tuesday to be Elvis Presley Memorial Day, marking the 50th anniversary of the singer’s birth. In fact, neither the governor nor any of his staff noticed that the proclamation issued Wednesday incorrectly listed Presley’s age as 32 at the time of his death in 1977. He was 42. “We’ll have to put out another proclamation,” said aide Madeline Lewis.

DUDLEY MOORE In 'Micki & Maude'

HOLLYWOOD (AP) Moviegoers spent $26.6 million to see “Beverly Hills Cop” last week, a record amount for a non-summer film, Paramount Pictures officials said. The Eddie Murphy smash broke the old non-summer record of $22.2 million, which it set itself in its first week, London said. Released a month ago, “Beverly Hills Cop” has hauled in $84.1 million, the fifth highest four-week total in film history. Only “The Return of the Jedi,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “Ghostbusters” all summer releases did better, London said. The Disney re-release of “Pinocchio” came in second. MGM-UA’s “2010” moved up a notch into third with $6.6 million at 1,213 screens; Goldie Hawn’s “Protocol” displaced Warner Brothers stablemate “City Heat” at No. 4, and “Dune” last week’s second-highest grossing film slipped to No.B. “Micki & Maude,” the Columbia comedy starring Dudley Moore, moved into sixth place in its second week. “The Flamingo Kid” edged into 10th place with $4.4 million. • NEW ORLEANS (AP) Singers Wayne Newton and Melissa Manchester will serve as marshals when the Krewe of Enymion rolls Feb. 16 in festivities and a parade leading up to Mardis Gras. Newton, who was an Endymion marshal in 1978, and Miss Manchester will join Fats Domino and his orchestra for the traditional big party in the Louisiana Superdome after the Saturday night parade, officials said Wednesday. • SHEFFIELD, England (AP) Richard Allen, 21-year-old drummer of the British rock band Def Leppard, was reported in “stabilized and slightly improved” Wednesday following surgery that reattached his severed left arm. Allen lost the arm in a car crash in northern England Monday, and surgeons at Royal Hallamshire Hospital here stitched it back on in a four-hour operation the same day. “The surgeons say that the operation appears to have been successful but it will be a few days before they can be completely sure,” said a hospital source, who spoke only on condition of anonymity. But the doctors could not predict how much use of the arm Allen might recover, he added. Police said the sports car Allen was driving crashed at high speed on a highway near Sheffield. The car left the road on a curve and overturned, catapulting Allen into a field.
