Faith-politics debate judged top 'B4 story
By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer The nation’s election-campaign controversy over faith and politics, including arguments about abortion and the biblical end-time battle of Armageddon, was judged by religion news specialists as 1984’s top religion story. It featured a headline cast, the presidential aspirants, their political supporters and sundry religious figures, Protestant and Roman Catholic. It featured a headline cast, the presidential aspirants, their political supporters and sundry religious figures. In a poll of religion news reporters and editors across the country, conducted by the 200-member Religion Newswriters Association, 64 responded, voting that the campaign furor about religion was the top religious development. It sparked discussions of beliefs from both President Reagan and his Democratic rival, Walter Mondale, and sideline fireworks from his running mate, Geraldine Ferraro. She and two other New York Catholics, Bishop John O’Connor and Gov. Mario Cuomo, carried on a running feud about outlawing abortion, while other bishops urged broader life concerns. Several religious figures criticized Reagan for his professed interest in the biblical images of Armageddon. But evangelicals overwhelmingly
Vatican letter was based on canons, secretary says
WASHINGTON (AP) - The general secretary of the National Conference of Catholic bishops says church law impelled the recent Vatican letter asking several priests and nuns to renounce their views allowing abortion or face dismissal. Msgr. Daniel Hoye says canons 696, 697 and 698 specify that “spreading doctrines condemned” by the church is “cause for dismissal from religious life.” He noted the canons also provide for due process and right of defense. Cloverdale church will show film “God’s Prison Gang,” a film featuring criminals who have become Christians, will be shown at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, at First Church of the Nazarene in Cloverdale. It is free and open to the public. Shot behind the walls of New York’s Attica prison, the film is narrated by Art Linkletter. The 44-minute movie features, among others, George Meyer, Al Capone’s getaway driver, and Floyd Hamilton, last of the Bonnie and Clyde Gang.

God Is There is a God! The existence of God is the only logical explanation of what exists. Man cannot logically explain the universe without admitting the existence of God. The universe exists. Who can deny it? How did it get here? From where did the various parts originate? Theories which begin with a denial of the existence of God must explain the universe from a materialist point of view. The various elements which exist in the universe are assumed to have become mixed in the right portions and in the right temperatures to produce the things which are. The mixing which occurred was not controlled and guided by a divine mind; rather, the things which exist came into being as a result of the chance mixing of elements. The law of probability makes it incredible that the world could come into being in this manner. If a person put ten pennies which were numbered 1-10 in his pocket, his chances of pulling out number 1 are 1 in 10. His chances of pullout out number 1 followed by number 2 are 1 in 100. His chances of pulling out number 3 next are 1 in 1000. His chances of going through the whole sequence in order are 1 in 10 Billion! My friends, where are many more than 10 elements which would have to be mixed in the proper order and at the proper temperature to produce one amino acid. All of this would have to be done under the careful guidance of a high-skilled research scientist. Yet, we are asked to believe that the world as we know it came into existence through chance. , Frankly, to believe such stretches credulity. The only other alternative is to believe that a Divine Being created this world The creation around us declares, "There is a God!" backed him, 66 percent of them according to a post-election Gallup poll, as did majorities of Protestants and Catholics. The year’s second-placed religion story, the release by Catholic bishops of the first draft of their strongly liberal pastoral letter on the U.S. economy urging more government help to the poor, also had political ramifications. But the bishops had delayed its issuance until after the election. In order of their ranking, as compiled by religion writer Wilmar Thorkelson of Minneapolis, these were other big religion stories of the year: Third The wave of violence by militant, homeland-demanding Sikhs in India following the storming of their Golden Temple, ensuing in the assassination of India’s president, Indira Gandhi. Fourth Awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to South African Anglican Bishop Desmond Tutu, an eloquent black critic of his country’s race-separation system, later elected bishop of Johannesburg. The goverment concluded an investigation of the South African Council of Churches he had headed with no action against it. Fifth Congress voted down a schoolprayer amendment backed by the Reagan administration, but passed an “equal access” law giving student religion groups the same rights to meet on school premises as other extracurricular clubs.
He said the Vatican’s Congregation for Religious and Secular Institute, in contacting superiors of 26 nuns and priests, had acted on the basis of those canons and the church’s “constant teaching” of the “immorality of abortion.” The priests and nuns had been among 97 signers of a full-page ad, sponsored by Catholics for a Free Choice and placed in the New York Times last Oct. 7, contending that the church over the centuries has held varying views about some abortions, as do some contemporary Catholic theologians.

Tiny Lutheran congregation in spotlight
Members defy court order, stay in church
By WILLIAM ROBBINS c. 1984 N.Y. Times CLAIRTON, Pa. With faces marked by sorrow and anger, members of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a congregation once held together by friendship and a common faith, were staring at one another Thursday across a gulf grown wider than the street between them. Then the visitor they awaited arrived and a new tension rippled through clusters of members and onlookers at the 56-year-old stone church. He was the Rev. Donald Anderson, the emissary both of his denomination and a county court, bearing a judge’s order supporting his mission to take control of their church and give substance to the declaration of their bishop, that the troubled Trinity Lutheran Church no longer exists. Anderson strode to the church door, followed after an interval by Allegheny County’s sheriff, Eugene Coon. Anderson demanded both the keys to the church and its records. Defiant parishioners barricaded inside rejected the demand. Both then quickly walked away. Efforts by the bishop to take control of the church have become a familiar ritual in this town south of Pittsburgh, though never before backed by so much legal

authority. And as it was played out Thursday, many members of the little church were recalling both happier times in their congregation and the.dispute that divided it. The schism has become a symbol of larger conflicts between worker and employer, between the rule of law and the concept of civil disobedience, between different attitudes toward a church’s socialresponsibility, between disadvantaged citizens and their government that have set neighbor against neighbor here in the valleys of the Monongahela and Ohio rivers. The church was built here in Clairton, now an old, declining mill town, at a time when, as a former pastor said the other day, “steel was the king in the Mon-Ohio Valley.” The church grew with the industry, and

at its peak in the 1950 s it had about .250 members. But like the steel mills that dot the valley, its members aged and many of their children moved away. By the end of last year, when trouble began to divide the congregation, its membership had fallen to about 145. The work force had fallen at the mills, too, spawning a militant group of unionleaders and former workers that called itself the Network to Save the MonOhio Valley, an organization that soon found an ally in an equally militant group of clerics, the Denominational Ministry Strategy. The groups demanded action both by government and corporations to fight unemployment. They focused regional and then national attention on their demands with protests that included “deposits” of dead fish in bank vaults and demon-

strations at the homes and churches of corporate executives. Trinity, with one of the militants as its pastor, became caught up in the conflicts The pastor, some members say, often preached of corporate “evil” and demanded contributions for his group’s cause More than 90 members, most of whom had begun to boycott services and church collections, petitioned the Bishop, Kenneth R. May, for relief. They said that they were willing to give directly to the needy but not to a militant cause that used their money for what they regarded as propaganda. The pastor, the Rev. D. Douglas Roth, and others in the group replied that theirs was a “prophetic ministry,” an Old Testament term for crying out against evil as the biblical prophets did. They said they viewed direct contributions to the needy as purely temporary relief, when what was needed was basic economic changes that would create jobs. May ordered Roth to desist. When told Roth had not complied, the bishop suspended the 33-year-old pastor. And when Roth refused to quit his duties, May obtained a court order supporting his command. Roth is serving a 90-day jail sentence for defying the court order.
