GRANT AND ANNE WILEY At Bainbridge

Rev. Wiley new pastor at Bainbridge The Bainbridge Christian Church has called Grant M. Wiley, a native of lowa, to serve as its minister. Rev. Wiley and his wife, Anne, are now occupying the church parsonage on East Main Street in Bainbridge. Rev. Wiley was ordained into the Christian ministry in 1981 by the Assemblies of God. He completed his bachelor’s degree at North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, Minn., and will begin studies toward a master of divinity degree in January at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis. He is directing his ministry to serving the Christian Churches ( Disciples of Christ) as he continues his studies. REV. WILEY RECENTLY served a three-year pastorage in Oxford Junction, lowa. For six years prior to that call, he served churches in Manchester and Van Wert, lowa. Coming from a farm background, Rev. Wiley enjoys outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing. His volunteer experience includes work with HACAR, an agency serving the elderly. Anne Wiley, who was born in Seoul, Korea, was adopted by an American family. She moved to the United States in 1970, graduating from high school in 1975 before attending New Tribes Bible Institute in Jackson, Mich. Bainbridge Christian Church also has announced its schedule of Christmas services. SUNDAY’S MORNING worship will feature a children’s sermon and a choir anthem, “Under the Stars.” At 6 p.m. Sunday, the choir will sponsor a caroling party, featuring singing in the streets of Bainbridge and a soup supper afterward in the church basement. Gifts of toys and food may be brought to the party for distribution to local families by the church’s outreach committee. Christmas Eve candlelight service will begin at 8 p.m. in the sanctuary. A Christmas play, “The Voices of the Nativity,” written by Bill and Eresa Carr, will feature children of the congregation. Pearl Robinson will sing “The First Noel” and Anne Wiley will sing “O Holy Night.” Everyone is welcome at all services.

Presbyterian candlelight services set The Greencastle Presbyterian Church, 110 S. College Ave., will have Christmas Eve candlelight services at 7 and 11 p.m. The earlier one, a family candlelight service, will be more informal and include special music by the choir and the singing of traditional Christmas hymns. The 11 p.m. service also will feature communion. In keeping with the church’s Reformed heritage, the worship will be simple and dignified, providing worshippers time for personal reflection on Christ’s coming. All professing Christians will be invited to share in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Music at the 11 p.m. service will be provided by high school and college students from the community. It will conclude with a traditional candle-lighting ceremony.

John the Baptist foretold 'good news

'...for the kingdom of heaven is at hand'

By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer Out of the wastelands, he came. Out of the barren desert, the ravines and rocky hills, John the Baptist came down to the Jordan banks, proclaiming the the coming of the Lord. “Repent,” the unkempt prophet cried, “for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” A strange figure, this herald of the offspring of Christmas, this man of the empty backlands, the dunes and cliffs, this dweller among the cactus, caves and sands, immersed in the long thoughts of silence and the stars. “Prepare the way of the Lord,” he urged. “Make his paths straight.” John provided the public sequel to the Christmas story of the humble birth in a stable, the shepherds’ awe, the adoration of the Magi. The desert mystic announced the entry of that child into his adult mission. The prophet, wrapped in camel hide, a leather girdle about his waist, had survived alone on locusts and wild honey, finally bursting forth beside the Jordan with his astonishing news. “Who are you?” demanded the crowd that gathered about him there on the river bank. “Are you Elijah? Are you the Christ?”

exploited humanity. “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. ” That was the “good news” of the coming of the mature Jesus, and not long afteward, he appeared there on that riverbank to be baptized. John, stunned and suddenly overcome, exclaimed: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” Protesting at first against baptizing him, John said, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come tome?” But Jesus quietly reassured, “Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” As he emerged from the water, the accounts say, the “Spirit of God descending like a dove” alighted on him, and a voice was heard from on high, saying: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Jesus told a crowd that John was not a “reed shaken by the wind,” but “a prophet, yes ... and more than a prophet... I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John.” Then Jesus added one of his enigmatic insights. “Yet he who is the least in the kingdom is greater than he.”
