Cubs own tough act to follow
by STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Last year a very young and inexperienced Greencastle High School basket--ball team surprised everyone by winning .the West Central Conference and com- . piling a glossy 15-7 record. ■ _ Coach Doug Miller couldn’t have asked • anything more of a ball club that started without a single returning starter and only one letterman from the program. “The -!?all club this year has its work cut out for it to play to anymore potential than what the group did a year ago,” the coach said. GREENCASTLE WON’T surprise anyone this year with four returning starters and one of the state’s top returning scorers. Jay Hopkins, David Rushing, David Smith and all-state candidate Mike Cooper all return from that surprising team, along with backup center David Murphey. “We’re certainly not overconfident just because we won 15 a year ago that we’re going to have an outstanding season because that’s not the case,” Miller said. “You don’t get something for nothing.”

But Greencastle would appear to be a cinch to win 15, starting with the presence of Cooper. The 6-1 senior scored 30 so many times last year that if he were a journalist, fans would have repeatedly seen the end. THE TRANSFER OF Lafayette Harrison High School scored 27 points a game in his first year as a Tiger Cub despite being double and triple teamed. “Obviously Mike, by being one of the top leading scorers in the state is going to receive a lot of attention, but we are not going to have a great deal of success as a team if we rely upon one person,” Miller said. “I don’t feel like this year we have to rely upon one person. I think the people who are going to be playing on this ball team, they’re all capable of scoring, they’re all capable of contributing.” LIKE COOPER, THE 6-1 Smith has already earned two varsity letters, averaging 12.3 points per game last year as the Cubs’ top perimeter shooter. He reached double figures 15 times in 20 regular-season games, scoring a seasonhigh 22 points against Danville. However, a knee injury slowed him in the early going of practice and coach Miller’s last report had Smith playing at 80 per cent. Hopkins, a 6-2 senior, compliments Smith as a rebounding forward, while 6-1 junior Rushing is back at guard with Cooper. Rushing proved to a strong

squad are: front row, from left, manager Todd Detro, Kris Nelson, David Rushing, Mike Cooper, Chris Hanson, Tony Winders and manager Todd Hendershot. Back row, from left, assistant coach
“He’s an extremely hard worker and he wants to play basketball. I think David is going to surprise a lot of people this year with the effort he is going to give and the contributions he’s going to make to our ball team.” Despite the presence of veterans and proven scorers at the other four positions on the floor, Cooper will be double-teamed a lot. Opponents will come out in box-and-one defenses, diamond-and-twos and try everything in the book just as they did last year. “WE THINK THAT’S fine. If they want to spend another defensive player and try to stop Mike, we’re going to be able to find the open man and we think that open man will be fairly effective for us,” Miller said Greencastle’s depth is unsettled. Coach Miller can turn to juniors Brian Durham or Kevin Scroggin for additional height, both standing 6-3. Junior Kris Nelson will see time in the backcourt as will junior movein Tony Winders, who will open the year on

the junior varsity until he learns the Tiger Cub system. Before the season is finished 6-1 sophomore Doug Hedrick, frO sophomore Scott Dunn and 5-8 sophomore Chris Hanson could see playing time on the varsity as coach Miller looks for a sixth man. “YES, POTENTIALLY WE are a better ball club than we were a year ago, but that’s yet to be proven on the floor. We’ve all seen teams that should be better the following year and then something just doesn’t quite fit into place for them,” Miller said.

Now one thing Greencastle proved last year was it could play a variety of paces - full court, half-court, spread into fourcorners. But if Miller gets his way the Cubs will be playing full court, runing basketball all the way and go after its opponents on defense. “We’ll be more competitive than possibly we were a year ago,” Miller said looking at traditional powers like Terre Haute North and South, Crawfordsville and Plainfield. This year the Cubs will have South, Crawfordsville and Plainfield all at McAnally Center, all big games
“He’s a very good player with excellent quickness,” Knight said of Calloway. “Like other players we’ve had, he has the ability to play a variety of ways.” Calloway, who averaged 24.6 points and 13.3 rebounds a game.
