By The Associated Press Top-ranked Indiana State collides with llilsa Saturday for the Missouri Valley Conference championship. Both have 4-0 conference records going into the final league game of the season. “They are, without a doubt, the best football team we’ve played this yedr,” Sycamore Coach Dennis Raetz said of Tulsa’s Golden Hurricane. “They’re bigger, stronger and faster than any team we’ve seen so far. We’re now getting ready for our 10th game of the year, and this will be the first option team we’ve faced in that time,” Raetz said Thursday. ‘‘We have a chance to do well if we come out ready to play, but it will take a supreme effort on our part to come out with a victory.” Indiana State, 9-0 overall, is ranked No.l in the nation in the NCAA Division I-AA poll. Tulsa, 5-4 overall, has won a con-ference-record 20-straight Missouri Valley games and is shooting for a fifth straight league championship.

Tulsa has won all four previous meetings with the Sycamores. Indiana State again will rely heavily on its defense, which has allowed only 73 points all season. The 8.1-point average is second in the Division I-AA stats. Offensively, the Sycamores have averaged more than 30 points a game. Tulsa’s main offense has been the rush, but Indiana State has allowed only three touchdowns on the ground all season. Elsewhere Saturday, Ball State, which announced this week the contract of Coach Dwight Wallace would not be renewed, ends its season at Central Michigan; Illinois plays winless Indiana at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis; and Purdue, still in the chase for the Big Ten Conference championship, is at Wisconsin. Butler, playing for the annual Indy Top Dog trophy at Indiana Central, hopes for a Valparaiso victory over Ashland, which would give the Heartland Collegiate Conference title to Butler’s Bulldogs. Franklin is at Evansville,

Michigan State one of many problems lowa is now facing
By JOE MOOSHIL AP Sports Writer Coach Hayden Fry of lowa’s Hawkeyes has been trying to maintain his sense of humor in the face of adversity this week while preparing for Michigan State and another stride toward the Big Ten title and Rose Bowl bid. The 18th-ranked Hawkeyes are in front in the race for the title and bowl bid, but injuries could become costly. Tailback Ronnie Harmon is out for the season with a broken leg, and quarterback Chuck Long’s status remains doubtful because of a bruised knee. ‘‘We’re trying to keep a sense of humor and remain as low key as possible,” said Fry about the injuries. ‘‘Harmon is out, and there’s nothing we can do about that. We might not know about Long until prega me warmups. ’ ’ lowa, with a 5-1-1 record, can take it all by defeating Michigan State and Minnesota, but that might not be easy, especially against Michigan State. The Spartans, who are 4-3 in the Big Ten and 54 overall, have won four of their last five
Indianapolis gets support
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The president of Ecuador says his country cannot afford to be host for the 1987 Pan American games, an Indianapolis businessman says. President Leon Febres Cordero cabled the Pan American Sports Organization Thursday, “My decision, distinguished gentleman, has been final and extrememly conflicting for someone like me with a passionate love for sports.” He said the emergency needs of his South American nation require that priorities be placed on housing, hospital services, education and environmental consideration. Cordero indicated he would support a bid by Indianapolis for the games. Indianapolis was chosen by PASO as an alternative site for the games in the event Ecuador was financially unable to have them.

games and could qualify for a postseason game with two more victories. Like lowa, Michigan State has a tough defense and Spartan Coach George Perles said “It could be a low-scoring game because of the way we both play defense. ” Ohio State, ranked No. 13, and Purdue, still maintain high hopes for the Rose Bowl bid. Both have 5-2 records and are tied for second place, one-half game behind lowa, and both are on the road Saturday with Ohio State at Northwestern and Purdue at Wisconsin. In other games, Illinois will wind up its season at Indiana and Minnesota will be at Michigan. “I don’t think we’ll be looking past Northwestern,” said Ohio State Coach Earle Bruce, who understandably will be interested in other results Saturday. “I can’t control what happens other than winning our last two football games, but Michigan State is a fine football team and Purdue has to play at Wisconsin.” Northwestern's chances of upsetting Ohio State are remote, although the Wildcats on Thursday signed Coach Dennis
In Indianapolis, Ted Boehm, president of Indiana Sports Corp., sent a copy of Cordero’s cable to The Associated Press. Boehm said Cordero’s decision is final but added it is not clear whether the Ecuadoran Olympic Committee still hopes to stage the games in its country. “The government’s decision is final that they do not want to host the games,” Boehm said. “There are those who maintain that it’s just not possible to host the games without government support. ” Boehm and Indianapolis Mayor William H. Hudnut led a delegation to Mexico City Sunday to present the city’s bid for the games. Oldsmobile in at 500 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indianapolis Speedway has chosen as pace car for the 1985 500-mile race a new frontwheel drive Oldsmobile Calais. Speedway President Joe Cloutier announced Thursday the Calais, with a red metallic exterior, silver leather interior trim and an open roof, will be powered by a specially developed 2.5-liter, L-4 engine. Oldsmobile also paced the Indy 500 start in 1949,1960,1970,1972,1974 and 1977. “We’ve been there many times before,” said Joseph J. Sanchez, Oldsmobile general manager and vice president of General Motors. “We’re pleased that next May’s return will offer us a unique opportunity to demonstrate some of the exciting concepts in our all-new Calais.” The Speedway will open for practice May 4. Qualifications are scheduled May 11-12 and May 18-19, with the 33 fastest qualifiers starting the race May 26.

Green to a new three-year contract. That will not help stop tailback Keith Byars, the nation’s leading rusher, who is healthy again after suffering a minor ankle injury last Saturday. Even if Ohio State and Purdue are unable to overhaul lowa for the Rose Bowl bid, both schools are in line for postseason invitations. Ohio State could nail a major bowl bid by finishing with victories over Northwestern and Michigan. Purdue could finish with an 8-3 record by defeating Wisconsin and Indiana. Little is at stake in the other two games. Indiana is still seeking its initial triumph and doesn’t figure to get it against Illinois. The Illini cannot go to any bowl games because of NCAA sanctions, so they’ll be shooting for individual honors. David Williams needs nine more receptions to become the third player in college history with 100 in a season. He is the No. 1 receiver in the nation. Minnesota and Michigan will continue one of the oldest rivalries in the Big Ten involving one of the more famous trophies--the Little Brown Jug

Another of stars may dropout By DICK JOYCE AP Sports Writer INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Marge Everett is having some anxious moments waiting to see if patched-up Slew o' Gold makes it to the post for Saturday s $3 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. The chief operating officer of Hollywood Park who won the bidding to stage the inaugural Breeders’ Cup series, an extravaganza of seven races worth $lO million on Saturday, already has seen several standouts drop out, including John Henry, Saratoga Six, Seattle Song, Folk Art and Image of Greatness. And on Thursday, Slew o’ Gold, unbeaten in five starts this year and expected to be the star of the show, suffered a quarter crack on the heel of his right front foot after his first gallop on the track. Mickey Taylor, a co-owner of Slew o’ Gold, a leading candidate for Horse of the Year honors, was confident his colt would go in the l>/ 4 -mile Classic, his scheduled last start before retirement. A decision was expected today after the colt’s final workout. “I’m 95 percent sure, he will run,” Taylor said after huddling with Everett. “If he’s not 100 percent, he’ll tell us. He'll give us clues if he’s not right.” Angel Cordero, who turned 42 Thursday, again will ride Slew o’ Gold, a winner of $2.8 million. Gate Dancer, the Preakness, Omaha Gold Cup and Super Derby winner, is the second choice at 9-2. NBC will telecast live the Breeders' Cup series, beginning at 11 a m. PST. DIFFERENT JOBS LOS ANGELES (AP) Cornerback and free safety both are defensive back positions in pro football but they are as different as a football and a baseball, according to Johnnie Johnson of the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson has played both positions. “The job of cornerback is to defend against just one player, usually the fastest man on the other team,” he said. “If he gets behind you and catches the ball, it usually is a touchdown.” A free safety’s job is entirely different. “The free safety is always looking into the opponent’s entire offense as it lines up for a play,” he said. “Part of your job is to read that offense, call out instructions to your teammates and go where you are needed. But you can’t leave your position too soon.”
