Worry Clinic

By George W. Grane, Ph.D., Mi).

CASE K-952: Sam A., age 48, was the Jewish merchant of Baltimore, whom I invited to speak before my psychology class at George Washington University. That class was headed “Vocational Guidance” and Sam was a splendid Applied Psychologist. So he began by mentioning that many young people refuse to take a job, especially after they graduate from college, because they claim: “There’s no future in this job.” Sam brilliantly exploded that excuse by showing how various leading men at the head of large corporations, had started as newspaperboys, shoe shine boys, dishwashers at restaurants, etc. There is no future in ANY job,” he pontificated, “for the future must always be in the ambitious worker who looks ahead. “Such a person takes the best position that is available but keeps his eyes open for anything that is better; then he steps across to a higher rung on the neighboring ladder to success. In the present decade, we have witnessed a superb example of that in the case of Lee lacocca, who left a top position with one motor car manufacturer to take over an apparently bankrupt rival firm. But Mr. lacocca soon changed the supposed bankrupt car producer into the talk of the automotive world, and he himself

zoomed to an astoundingly greater income and prestige. Sam explained that rungs on a ladder do not move upward! It’s the alert worker who goes from one rung to the next higher one, as he ascends to the top! Often you may start on one ladder; then shift to another ladder on which you can step on a higher rung. Maybe you will even use several ladders before you reach the top rung, as Mr. lacocca so brilliantly demonstrates. My final admonition to my psychology students was always tWs: “Don’t be idle, waiting for the breaks. Instead, take the best job available as of the present moment, but get to work! “Meanwhile, keep your eyes open for a better position with your present firm or with any neighboring company that permits you to step on a higher rung of the ladder to success. “But while you are on a given rung, do the job to the best of your ability and take night classes, if available, to expand your usefulness to your present employer.” So send for my “Vocational Guidance Booklet,” enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 50*. And get upon a rung of some sort, even in high school, as by carrying a newspaper route or being stock boy at a supermarket.
