Faith Assembly likely to endure in spite of Freeman's prosecution
WARSAW, Ind. (AP) - A theology professor says the prosecution of Faith Assembly founder Hobart E. Freeman probably will not weaken the religious resolve among members of the secretive faith-healing sect even if Freeman is convicted and sentenced. Professor John J. Davis said the church is tightly organized around members of Freeman’s family who could assume the mantle of his leadership in his absence. Davis teaches at Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake and is one of the few persons outside the church to have talked with Freeman at length. Son-in-law Steven Hill is among the family members holding key leadership positions, he said. “They already function from the pulpit,” he said. “I rather imagine it would

continue, probably not with the same depth and stature it has under his leadership. “I don’t think it would collapse,” he continued. “If anything, it would deepen the commitment of some members who see this as a serious persecution.” Davis interviewed the reclusive minister in 1983 for a series of articles on the church and Freeman’s leadership. Freeman has since refused to meet with Davis or answer reporters questions about his radical dogma of faith healing. A Kosciusko County grand jury last month indicted 64-year-old Freeman on charges related to the death of a 15-year-old Pamela M. Menne from untreated chronic kidney failure. The grand jury also indicted the girls’ parents, James Menne, 37, and his wife, lone Menne, 44, of rural Warsaw. “I really doubt if any of this is going to make any substantive difference in his theology,” Davis said. Davis, a former seminary student of Freeman, said Freeman’s beliefs are “unnegotiable.” Freeman teaches members to spurn conventional medical treatment for illness and to rely instead on prayer. Believers who use medicine, or who even wear prescription glasses or hearing aids, supposedly lack faith in what he says is God’s biblical promise to heal the sick. The Mennes followed those teachings and withheld medical care from their daughter, causing her death, Prosecutor Michael Miner said. The Mennes were each charged with reckless homicide, criminal recklessness and neglect of a dependent. Freeman was charged with three counts of aiding and inducing the alleged crimes charged against the Mennes. Attorney General Linley E. Pearson agreed criminal prosecution may have little effect on the faith-healing practices of church members. But he said authorities have no alternatives to prosecution. “It’s never the best (way), but in this case it may be the only way when the child dies,” he said. “What else are you going to do? Are you just going to let it happen? ” Pearson supported an unsuccessful attempt by the 1984 General Assembly to modify a child neglect law that allows parents to substitute prayer for medicine in the “legitimate practice” of religious beliefs. Davis said the charges against Freeman and the Mennes, and the earlier convictions of two Indiana Faith Assembly couples on charges of reckless homicide and child neglect, are signs of frustration within the communities. “Some are thinking maybe if we punish some of them, the rest of them will fall into line,” he said. “That’s terribly naive.” The sect’s faith healing practices have been linked to more than 90 preventable deaths, including those of infants and pregnant women
