CHUCK NOLL No problems
Steelers to stick with winning QB PITTSBURGH (AP) - For the first time in a month, the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t have their weekly quarterback controversy. Pittsburgh Coach Chuck Noll, in an upbeat mood Monday following a 35-10 demolition of the Atlanta Falcons, said Mark Malone will start next Sunday for the second week in a row. Malone directed the Steelers’ 20-17 upset of the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 14, his first start in three years, but found himself back on the bench a week later when the Steelers lost to the Indianapolis Colts with David Woodley at quarterback. Malone was back on the field and Woodley was back on the bench with a bad leg Sunday against the Falcons, who succumbed to three Malone touchdown pqsses and an alert Steeler defense that forced three turnovers. Malone tossed scoring strikes of 31 and 20 yards to John Stallworth and 7 yards to running back Rich Erenberg and “overcame some early adversity and wasn’t thrown by misfortune,” Noll said. Noll said his decision to start Malone isn’t a slap at Woodley, who reinjured his right leg in warmups Sunday. “He has to be well to challenge for the job,” Noll said. “When someone comes in and does exceptionally well, it’s tough to come back in. It isn’t so much that David has lost the position ... he isn’t able to play. He’s hurting right now. Mark is doing it right now and David isn’t sharp and isn’t ready to play,” Noll said. Noll was asked that when Woodley is ready physically, if it wouldn’t be in the Steelers’ best interest to designate a starting quarterback and forego the weekly air of uncertainty. “You do what you have to do to win,” Noll said. “If that’s playing one guy, that’s it.” Noll, in contrast to his unhappiness after the Colts’ loss, cracked jokes and even • made a reference to now-retired Steelers’ quarterback Terry Bradshaw, a frequent topic of discussion in past Noll news conferences. “He prepared as well as anyone I’ve seen prepare,” Noll said of Malone. “He took films home and came back with a list of things he needed to know. He worked very hard in his preparation.” Former Steelers’ running back Rocky Bleier, now a TV sportscaster, then piped up, in an inferred reference to Bradshaw. “Is that something unusual for your quarterback?” Bleier asked. Noll joined in the laughter, knowing that if Bradshaw was ever unprepared in 14 National Football League seasons, it didn’t show. “When you’re nearsighted, it’s difficult to prepare,” Noll joked. Noll referred to Bradshaw’s recent claim that he had previously undisclosed vision problems that often made his own receivers indistinguishable from opposing defensive backs.
HE HASN’T MISSED A DAY
Since his first election to the Indiana General Assembly in 1966, John Thomas has never missed a day of the legislature. While the legislature is in session, he commutes daily between his Brazil home and the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Although legislative sessions often run late, he returns home each evening, making himself easily accessible to the citizens he represents. During his daily trips between his district and the Statehouse, he’s taken along more than 1,100 high school students from Putnam and Clay counties to serve as pages in the Indiana House of Representatives. Eighteen years without missing a day that’s dedication. kelecJOHN THOMAS State Representative
Win keeps Seahawks in line for some extras
SAN DlEGO (AP) season, Seattle’s 7-2 record might place the Seahawks atop the AFC West standings. It certainly would put them in commanding position to gain a National Football League playoff berth. This year, 7-2 is good for only a secondplace tie in the rugged division, and Seattle’s 24-0 manhandling of San Diego on Monday night was needed simply to keep apace of its peers. “We’ve still got some things to do, and some more games left in the season to do them,” said quarterback Dave Krieg, who threw for 282 yards and connected with Steve Largent for three touchdowns. “Seven-and-two in this division doesn’t assure you of anything.” Seattle remains tied with the Los Angeles Raiders, one game behind frontrunning Denver in the division. The Seahawks play the Raiders once more and still have two games left with Denver. Seattle sacked San Diego quarterback Dan Fouts six times for 47 yards in losses and forced the Chargers into four turnovers. It was reminiscent of the teams’ first meeting this year, when San Diego

Big test ahead for Bengals
CINCINNATI (AP) Kookie Cincinnati Coach Sam Wyche, whose Bengals trail Pittsburgh by two games in the Central Division of the American Football Conference, is hoping his team plays as well against San Francisco as it did last Sunday against Houston. The Bengals, who won 31-13 over the Oilers, have not allowed a passing touchdown in 17 quarters. “I really hadn’t thought of that,” saids Wyche, “but it’s a good stat. I think what’s happening is that our defensive backs are making the plays. Earlier in the year, they were in position to make the plays but just not making them.” Wyche was asked what he told the team before its workout Monday. “Here’s what I told them: ‘There’s a lot

coughed up the ball eight times in a 31-17 loss. “We just didn’t execute the way we should,” wide receiver Charlie Joiner said. “It was pretty much the same thing (as last time). They play good defense and are very good on special teams. “Those things happen. We keep saying, ‘We have to rebound, we have to rebound,’ and we’ve just got to keep saying it until we do.” The Chargers, playing without injured receivers Kellen Winslow and Wes Chandler and using limping tight ends Pete Holohan and Eric Sievers sparingly, suffered their first shutout since a 7-0 loss to Denver five years ago. San Diego netted 201 total yards, less than half its average.
Badger named player of week

of can’ts if we want to win Sunday. You can’t fumble. You can’t throw interceptions. You can’t drop interceptions. You can’t line up wrong. You can’t jump offside. You can’t hold.’ “We’ve got to play even better than we did if we want to beat San Francisco,” said Wyche. “We can’t lose the Pittsburgh game,” in two weeks, said Wyche. The Bengals announced Monday that the Nov. 11 game with the Steelers is a sellout. Halfback James Brooks, who has been less than prominent following the preseason trade that sent fullback Pete Johnson to San Diego, had his best day as a Bengal, rushing for 76 yards on 12 carries. He also caught three passes for 15 yards against the Oilers.

Fouts was intercepted twice and lost a fumble and running back Lionel James was picked off on an attempted fleaflicker. All three interceptions were made by Kenny Easley, whose feat set a team record. “There’s not much to say,” San Diego Coach Don Coryell said. “All of us are embarrassed we played as poorly as we did. All we can look forward to is getting everybody pieced back together and be a spoiler.” Coryell had acknowledged last week that his team needed to beat the Seahawks to retain any chance of making post-season play. The Chargers are 4-5, with all five losses coming to fellow AFC West teams.
by rushing 31 times for 202 yards. He also caught two passes for six yards. That made it a clean sweep for the Badgers. Earlier, linebacker Craig Raddatz was named Player of the Week on defense with eight tackles and two interceptions.
