People in the news Murray, Winger rule at box office Color them box-office busters. Bill Murray and Debra Winger have been named “Stars of the Year” by the National Association of Theater Owners. MURRAY, STAR OF the mega-hit “Ghostbusters” and currently in his first dramatic role in “The Razor’s Edge,” was selected because “he is a super talent,” according to association president Joel H. Resnick. “Ghostbusters” was cited as the No. 1 box office hit of 1984. A former regular on “Saturday Night Live,” Murray starred in “Meatballs,” “Stripes” and “Caddyshack” before this summer’s “Ghostbusters” hit. MISS WINGER, STAR of “Terms of Endearment,” “An Officer and a Gentleman” and “Urban Cowboy,” has twice been nominated for Oscars. • Make way for the Van Pattens. Dick Van Patten, former star of ABC’s “Eight Is Enough,” his wife Pat and their three sons have all signed with 20th Century Fox to appear in a new situation comedy. NOT SINCE OZZIE AND Harriet Nelson and sons David and Ricky has an entire family appeared on the tube en masse in one series. The Osmonds, of course, appear on a variety show, but not with their parents. Married 31 years, the Van Pattens will play themselves, as will sons Vincent, 26, a touring tennis pro; Jimmy, 27, a writer, and Nels, 28, a teaching tennis pro. “The studio is developing a pilot for April,” Van Patten said. “All of us are going to be ourselves, doing what we do. Pat’s a numerologist, so that will be included, and there will be plenty of tennis, too.” • BLACKPOOL, England (AP) The sons of German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery were 14-year-old students when their fathers’ armies clashed during World War II at El Alamein. Today, the sons hope their friendship will further international understanding. Manfred Rommel, a West German politician, and David Montgomery, an international businessman, were saluted Sunday by more than 2,000 veterans of the desert campaign who gathered for an annual reunion. “It is a tragedy my father and Rommel never met,” said Viscount Montgomery, who inherited his father’s title. “Now history has rectified that and their sons have met. And there is a bond of friendship which may be helpful in international understanding.” “I am sure my father would approve of my being here,” said Rommel. “He was always sorry that World War II happened.” • PASADENA, Calif. (AP) Lee A. lacocca, chairman and chief executive of Chrysler Corp., Thursday was named grand marshal of the 1985 Tournament of Roses Parade. lacocca, the son of immigrants, was chosen because he is “the personification of this year’s theme, ‘The Spirit of America,”’ said tournament president James Boyle Jr.

Samuel Goldwyn Jr. has bought the film rights to “Gypsy and Me,” Erik Lee Preminger’s autobiographical book about his mother, Gypsy Rose Lee, and his discovery of the identity of his real father, Otto Preminger. The book, for which the Samuel Goldwyn Co. paid “in excess of $300,000,” according to a company spokesman, will become a film that concentrates on the son’s experience rather than on that of his parents, who never married. Goldwyn, whose father produced Otto Preminger’s version of “Porgy and Bess,’ had been especially eager to film the younger Preminger’s book. He described himself as delighted about the project, saying, “It’s the human drama of the story that I like, and not just the fact that Otto is a family friend.” No director or screenwriter for the project has been announced. NEW YORK (AP) Craig Claiborne, who once ordered a $4,000 dinner for two at Chez Denis in Paris, says “New York is the best restaurant city in the world.” Claiborne says New York chefs don’t always equal their colleagues in other lands, but the variety of cuisine available in the city is unmatched anywhere. In the November issue of GEO magazine, the New York Times’ veteran food critic says that in New York he favors The Four Seasons, Le Cirque, La Caravelle, II Monello, II Nido, Lutece, La Cote Basque, The Quilted Giraffe, Le Cygne, Maurice at the Parker Meridien Hotel, Shun Lee Palace, Auntie Yuan, and Shun Lee West. • THIS WEEK’S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY PEOPLE: Singer Charlie Daniels, 48, and Olympian-turned-sportscaster Bruce Jenner, 35, were Sunday’s birthday boys, while actor Richard Dreyfuss, 37, and actress Kate Jackson, 36, added a year on Monday. Tuesday means No. 39 for actor Henry Winkler and No. 45 for singer Grace Slick. Enjoying Wednesday’s cake and ice cream will be CBS newsman Dan Rather, 53, actor Michael Landon, 47, “Today Show” host Jane Pauley, 34, and actresses Dale Evans, 72, and Barbara Bel Geddes, 62. On Thursday, it’s No. 55 for actress Betsy Palmer and No. 24 for Los Angeles pitcher Fernando Valenzuela. Actor Burt Lancaster, 71, and actress Stefanie Powers, 42, share Friday’s birthdays, while singer Lulu, 36, entertainer Ken Berry, 51, and actor Charles Bronson, 63, all add a year next Saturday.
