Hamsho won't hold back going after Hagler
NEW YORK (AP) “Let me see how much Marvin Hagler can throw,” says Mustafa Hamsho. “I’m going to come out throwing everything,” says Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The two will meet for the second time for Hagler’s undisputed middleweight championship Friday night at Madison Square Garden. The first time they met, Hagler did most of the throwing and Hamsho most of the catching, as Hagler pounded native Syrian’s face bloody and stopped him in the 11th round Oct. 3, 1981, at Rosemont, 111.

Hagler was also cut in that brawl, but the champion from Brockton, Mass., was in command from the outset. “The last time I was a different fighter completely,” said the 30-year-old Hamsho, a U.S. citizen living in Brooklyn. “I never worried about bobbing and weaving. “Now I have more experience,” the No. 1-ranked contender in both the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council. “I slip punches better.” But Hamsho’s style is more brawling than boxing, and Hagler and his managers, Goody and Pat Petronelli, expect a tough fight. “It’s going to be bloody,” said Pat Petronelli. “I figure him to put up a better fight than the first time,” said the 30-year-old Hagler

JIM FREY Manager of the Year Frey obvious IML manager of the year CHICAGO (AP) Jim Frey, named National League Manager of the Year after leading the Chicago Cubs to their first title in 39 years, says his only incentive is to keep his job. Asked whether his contract which runs through the 1985 season contained incentive clauses that would reward him for such awards, Frey, in a joking mood, told reporters Wednesday, “I didn’t have any. My incentive is to try and not get fired.” Frey, in his 35th year in baseball, took the Chicago Cubs to the National East Division title in his second job managing. He had led the Kansas City Royals to the 1980 World Series in his first year as a major league manager. Frey was named on 23 of 24 ballots in voting by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, receiving 16 first-place votes and seven seconds for a total of 101 points. New York Mets Manager Dave Johnson was runner-up, followed by San Diego’s Dick Williams, whose Padres won three straight from the Cubs to take the NL pennant. “I’m honored and proud that people thought I did a good job, but it was the organization that went out and spent the money to get the ballplayers,” Frey, 52, said. “A lot of people deserve credit; I’m just the guy who happens to be standing here.” But, the soft-spoken Frey admitted he was less than surprised about the award. “We won more games than anybody in the National League, and I guess that put me in contention,” he said. But Frey said the award doesn’t wipe out the disappointment of the playoff loss. “I’m not going to feel good until something comes along that puts this (disappointment over losing to the Padres) out of my mind,” said Frey. “I'll be thinking about it until spring training.” Irish get one ZEIGLER, 111. (AP) Sean Connor, the leading scorer in Illinois prep basketball last seasoi., has announced his intention to attend motre Dame next fall. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound senior guard averaged 33.4 points per game as a junior at Zeigler-Royalton last season the best scoring average in the state. Connor “can help right away because of his shooting prowess,” said Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps. “He’s got to learn to practice in a competitive situation,” Phelps said Wednesday. “But from what I saw ... he’s a competitive kid.” Connor was a member of The Associated Press All-State team last season in his third as a starter for the Tornadoes and has been an All-Black Diamond Conference player for three consecutive years* He also is quarterback of the ZeiglerRoyalton football team.
