URBANA, 111. (AP) - Illinois still has the Big Ten’s best passing attack. Purdue no longer has the Big Ten’s best passing defense. That combination worries Boilermaker Coach Leon Burtnett. “I’ll promise you, Illinois’ passing attack will check anybody,” said Burtnett, who knows lllini quarterback Jack Trudeau has a 65 percent completion rate for 1,772 yards. “Trudeau has returned to great form and ... he’s well protected.” Burtnett said Tuesday he hopes the Boilermakers can at least slow down the lllini aerial assault. The Purdue defense will get its chance Saturday in Memorial Stadium one week after lowa quarterback Chuck Long picked it apart for 369 yards and four touchdowns. “Last week was our week to be down, but I think we'll come back,” said Burtnett, whose team was crushed by the Hawkeyes, 40-3. “We’re going to have to play extremely well just to be in the game with Illinois.” Illinois, too, is coming off a loss at Ohio State.

SEATTLE (AP) - Seattle Seahawks tight end Pete Metzelaars will be out three to four weeks with an injured right knee, a spokesman for the National Football League club says.

Coach Mike White said his defending Big Ten champions will play the final four games of the season with “pride” at stake, if not the conference title. “That’s about what you’ve got left,” said White. “It’s not hopeless; we have a mathematical chance at the conference championship.” But, “we’ve lost our grip” on the race, said White, whose team fell to 3-2 in the Big Ten after the disappointment at OSU. White, who said he was “sick” that Illinois played its best game of the year but could not quite beat OSU, gave his players the day off Monday to recover physically and mentally. “I’m just so darn sick that we had a chance at a championship game and let it slip through our hands,” said White. Falling to 3-1, Purdue gave up sole possession of the Big Ten lead and now shares it with OSU, Michigan and lowa. White said that Purdue has a very similar style on offense and defense as Illinois, so “it’s going to be a little like playing against ourselves.”

Metzelaars, a third-year pro from Wabash College who started in a 31-28 victory over Buffalo here Sunday, underwent surgery Monday. He was hurt against the Bills.

Bengals have no luck

CINCINNATI (AP) - Bad luck has nothing to do with the Cincinnati Bengals’ 1-6 record. Head Coach Sam Wyche believes. Instead, he blames poor fortune. “It’s not luck, but there is an element of good and bad fortune in the game, and in life,” Wyche told his weekly news conference Tuesday. And as Wyche sees it, the Bengals’ wheel of fortune isn’t spinning their way. Wyche said it’s been frustrating to watch the Bengals play well yet lose week after week. He thinks a more favorable break or two might have enabled the team to get on the winning track and could have translated into more victories. Injuries have played a major role in slowing the Bengals, Wyche said. But he had no single explanation for the way they’ve dropped passes, fumbled, thrown interceptions and made defensive mistakes to lose games. “It’s frustrating to see us play well, come close and not get the wins, and have really a different reason each week,” Wyche said.

Wyche said a main difference between the Bengals’ play this year and in their 1981 Super Bowl season is simply that things aren’t going their way. “I’ll say this in 1981 when we went to the Super Bowl and when Cincinnati went to the Super Bowl, those things went exactly the other way,” Wyche said. “You have years that way, when everything seems to fall. We would call a play, and the play wasn’t very good, but sure enough (quarterback Joe) Montana scrambled around and found somebody open, and Dwight Clark had another reception. Those things happen for you.” And they happen in unexplainable ways, he said. “If you are prepared and this team is prepared; if you’ve got good enough talent and this team has good enough talent; if you are making logical, objective, strategic decisions throughout the game and I think we have; at some point when you play a tight competitive game, fortune becomes good fortune or bad fortune,” Wyche said.
