People in the news Sharp-guy Bedford wows Hoosier fans INDIANAPOLIS (AP) To the joy of hundreds of women, actor Robert Redford made a campaign appearance in Indianapolis for Rep. Phil Sharp, D-Ind. “He is a man who for me represents a great quality in his independence,” Redford said Wednesday. “He is not a man who is going to be pushed to either side by vested interests or special interests. That means a lot to me as a citizen and as a voter.” Sharp, seeking a sixth term from the 2nd District in eastern and central Indiana, couldn’t attend an afternoon $25-a-person fund-raiser because of pressing congressional business in Washington. Sharp’s district has been targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee, which has been pouring money and support into the campaign of Muncie businessman Ken MacKenzie. Redford knows Sharp from their work together on the Institute For Research Management, an environmental group founded by the actor. “This is the only election race this year that I’m doing anything for. And it’s because of my feelings for Phil.” Louann Dummich and Angie Garritson, both of Indianapolis, won tickets to the fund-raiser • At 17, both girls are too young to vote and didn’t know much about Sharp. But they did know something about Redford. “I’ve seen ‘The Way We Were’ about six times,” said Louann, referring to Redford’s movie with Barbra Streisand. “We’re just here to get a little atmosphere. And learn something about politics. And look at Redford. We have to make it sound kind of academic,” she said. Before arriving at the club, Redford stopped at a private reception next door at the home of Joyce Weliever. He ducked into the house to change clothes before heading to the poolhouse, where a small crowd of Democratic county chairmen and vice chairmen were gathered. “All my nieces and nephews were standing in the hall. They handed him a notebook for his autograph and told him he had to do it times seven,” Mrs. Weilever said. “They were all standing in the living room booing him because he wasn’t hurrying up in the bathroom. ” • TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) The Brown Flying School Inc., of Terre Haute has filed suit against former Indiana Sen. Birch E. Bayh, claiming he has not paid for air charter service used during his unsuccessful 1980 campaign. The suit, filed Wednesday in Vigo Superior Court, claims Bayh owes the flying school $18,257 for his use of the private firm’s planes during his campaign. According to the suit, the flying school “has made repeated demands for payment on this account but the defendant, Birch E. Bayh, has failed to respond to those demands or make arrangments for payment.” • ROSS, Calif. (AP) Rock star David Crosby, who has a Dallas court date later this month to appeal a drug conviction there, has been arrested on drug and weapons charges in this San Francisco suburb. Crosby, 43, who gained fame with the group, Crosby, Stills and Nash, was stopped by police here Tuesday night, said Police Chief Douglas Miller. Officers found a dagger, a powdery substance believed to be a drug and narcotics paraphernalia, Miller said.

ROBERTREDFORD Visiting Indiana
BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) The Beaver of “Leave It To Beaver” television fame will make a homecoming of sorts Saturday in Bemidji. Jerry Mathers, who starred for six years in the family comedy, is scheduled to attend homecoming activities at Bemidji State University, where sports teams are nicknamed the Beavers. James Rasmussen, a program director for a Bemidji radio station, helped arrange Mathers’ visit. “We were thinking, golly, Bemidji State University is the home of the Beavers what could be more appropriate than bringing the Beaver here for homecoming?” NEW YORK (AP) A judge ordered a promoter to stop using Johnny Carson’s name to promote a movie about fashion model agency founder Eileen Ford after Carson said he had nothing to do with the film. Judge David Edwards on Wednesday granted an injunction against John King in response to papers filed by Carson, the 58-year-old host of NBC’s “Tonight Show,” saying his name and picture were used by King and Independent Casting without permission. Carson said King issued press releases saying the talk show host would play Mrs. Ford’s husband, Jerry, in a film biography, “The Eileen Ford Story.” King claimed he had “a commitment” from Carson, but Carson in court papers called the statement “entirely false.” SAN FRANCISCO (AP) “Here’s Johnny” or draw cartoons satirizing Mickey Mouse, but a girlie magazine can refer to its model of the month as “Commander Cody.” That was the message Wednesday from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which rejected a trademark and privacy suit by rock singer George Frayne, leader of the group “Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen.” He sued Penthouse magazine for a May 1981 photo essay on “Pet of the Month” Cody Carmack. The table of contents and article referred to her as “Commander Cody,” because, as the magazine explained, she “took charge of the men she dated.” The court said Frayne and Penthouse “are appealing fundamentally to two different audiences.” Last year, another federal appeals court allowed Johnny Carson to sue the distributors of “Here’s Johnny” portable toilets for violating his right of commercial publicity for his familiar slogan. Earlier, Walt Disney Studios successfully sued a cartoonist who imitated Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters in a satirical comic strip.
