A CIRRUS

Electrolysis

Tried, true means of permanent hair removal

By BARBARA CARHART Banner-Graphic Family Editor A woman’s hair is her crowning glory some say. But, hair can also be pesky as local electrologist Susan McKamey can attest. Operator of Great Expectrations, 25 W. Franklin St., Greencastle, McKamey has taken instruction in electrolysis through the Metropolitan Beauty Academy, Lebanon, from February-May, 1984 and was certified early in the summer. A licensed hairdresser for the past five years, McKamey became convinced there was a definite need for the service which she believes is “the only permanent method of hair removal.” "PEOPLE KEPT CALLING the shop about it (electrolysis),” the electrologist explained. “A lot of them had been going to Indianapolis to have it done.” McKamey said most of the requests for hair removal through electrolysis have been from women who want to remove hair permanently from their face. “But Ido a lot of bikini lines and I have

taken hair from men’s noses,” Ms. McKamey explained. “And, I even have taken hair off of ladies toes.” The theory behind electrolyosis, McKamey claims, is much simpler and less threatening than people imagine. “YOU SIMPLY INSERT a fine needle in the hair follicle,” Me Kamey explained, “and the current coagulates the tissue and kills it.” The electrical current McKamey speaks of is a instanteous one-millionth amphere of current shot through the follicle which heats the tissue and mixes with the moisture of the skin to destroy the hair. “It doesn’t hurt as much as tweezing,” McKamey offered. McKamey uses both a galvantic and radio frequency to conduct the current through the hair follicle. The choice, she says, is up to the customer. “WITH THE GALVANTIC frequency you insert the needle 20 seconds per hair,” she explained.” It produces sodium hydroxide which attacks the hair follicle. This is probably the most-effective method.” The radio frequency, however, is quicker. “With the radio frequency, you insert the needle about 5-7 seconds per hair,” McKamey explained. She added, “you have to feel it to know it’s working.” THERE ARE MANY factors which affect how difficult the hair is to remove and what method is best suited to accomplish the task. “Ordinary caffeine in Pepsi’s and chocolate makes hair follicles tighter and harder to insert needles,” McKamey explained. “Also, where the hair is located is a determining factor.” The most senstive part of a person’s body, she explained, is down the center

line which includes the space between eyebrows and the center of the stomach. “THE AMOUNT OF HAIR and the area I’m working in,” McKamey added, “determines how long a session. I have some ladies sleep through the treatments they feel so comfortable.” McKamey is quick to point out that several treatments may be needed depending on the amount of hair being removed and where it is located. “Some people can only sit for 15 minutes,” she explained. What makes hair removal a science is really a matter of chemistry. “TWENTY-FIVE PER CENT of your hair is in the shedding stage,” she explained. The stage a particular hair follicle is in has much to do with how easy it is to remove, McKamey added. “There are three stages: The amagen, catagen and telogen,” she explained. “The amagen is the best stage to remove hair because it is still growing. In the catagen

stage, the hair is dying and the telogen stage is when the hair is shedding. As a person gets older, his hair growth is more noticeable, McKamey explained. WHAT CUASES SUPERFLUOUS hair is generally a grandular disturbance, according to the hair dresser. “It always stems from something changing in the body,” she added. During puberty, pregnancy and menopause, electroloysis is not recommended. “People sometimes have temporary hair growth during these times,” McKamey explained. “Normally, you only work on hair removal during times of con tinuace growth.” HAIR REMOVAL USING electrolysis treatments is nothing new, McKamey explained. “It’s been around since 1866,” she added, “but it was more complicated back then.” In 1984, a person can expect to pay $1 a minute for the service.
