track since her teen-age years and has humiliated and disgraced us many times, but our parents seem always to forgive her. She was arrested for shoplifting in high school. Later, she was kicked out of college for stealing. At 23, she eloped with a wealthy young boy of 19. A year later, he caught her in bed with a 16-year-old caddy she dragged home from the country club. She’s on her second marriage now, and this husband doesn’t have the big bucks her first husband had, so she’s a hooker. Everybody in town knows this but our parents. Do we have to include her at the 50th? I’m afraid she’ll hustle men at the party. I spoke to our minister about this and he said, “T stands in the middle of pride,” but then he

doesn’t have a hooker for a sister. Please advise us. THE ELDEST DEAR ELDEST: The purpose of the celebration you’re planning is to bring joy to your parents, so don’t mar it by excluding your sister. Listen to your minister. Wise man, he.
DEAR ABBY: I am 28 and George (not his real name) is 34. We are very much in love and plan to marry soon. This is my second marriage and George’s first. The problem: George contributes to the support of his two illegitimate sons. He became a father at 18, and then again at 20

(two different women). I have never met George’s sons. Each lives with his mother in a distant state. George plans to provide for his sons’ college educations, which may mean some sacrifices on his part—and mine. I understand this, and I’m not grumbling about it. My problem? My parents haven’t been told about George’s sons. George says he thinks my parents should be told now, but '’ve asked him not to tell them yet. My parents are small town conservative people, and I’m afraid they would be turned off on George if they knew he had two illegitimate sons. Help me get my head straight, please. CHICKEN DEAR CHICKEN: I agree with George. Tell your parents now. Even small-town conservative people should respect a man for facing up to his responsibilities. Your George must be quite a man. Cherish him. * * * DEAR ABBY: I need an answer as soon as possible. I am to be married in three weeks, and just lately I have been wondering if my fiance has ever been married before. He claims he hasn’t, but is there some way I can check this out to be absolutely sure? We are both in our late 40s. Does the government keep a record of all marriages in the United States? If my fiance was married in California, would there be a record of his marriage in Michigan? I have heard of some men being married to more than one woman at a time. How can a woman protect herself from this? LULU (NOT MY REAL NAME) DEAR LULU: Marriages are listed in the county records, but there is no central government agency that keeps track of all marriages in the United States. Evidently you have reason to distrust this man. Please permit me to offer you a little unsolicited advice: Do not marry him until or unless all doubts about him are resolved. It’s far easier to dissolve an engagement than a marriage. And much cheaper. * * * DEAR ABBY: I just started going with a guy who’s 23. I’m 21. He told me he’s living with a 30-year-old woman, but it’s strictly platonic. He gave me his telephone number, but said if I call him and a woman answers, to hang up. That makes me wonder. He also told me that this woman has a crush on him, so he told her he wasn’t dating anybody because he didn’t want to upset her. Also, she’s been supporting him for a while, so he feels he owes her, but he’s in love with me. What do you think? And what should I do? I don’t want to lose him. NEEDS ADVICE DEAR NEEDS: I think he’s lying to you and he’s lying to the woman he’s living with. Quit seeing him. You can’t “lose” him because you never had him.
Heloise: Oil unsticks sticky labels
DEAR HELOISE: I recently purchased a non-stick skillet with two glued-on labels on the handle. I tried to scrape them off but they left a mess. Since I had just conditioned the skillet with cooking oil, I thought perhaps the oil would dissolve the glue residue on the handle. It did! I have since tried this on plastic bottles that had labels I wanted to remove. I simply soaked part of a paper towel with oil and left it on the label for about an hour. After the soaking, the label slipped right off! Sure did solve a troublesome problem for me! Mrs. Betty Keim * * * This is one of my favorite hints! Thanks for reminding me of it Heloise MILDEW REMOVAL Dear Heloise: A white plastic tablecloth used for an outdoor party

mildewed before I could wash it. I’ve used commercial mildew removers on it with no luck. I hate to throw it away. Can you help? A Reader ★ * * Use a strong solution of liquid chlorine laundry bleach and water (about half and half) and a scrub brush. Rub the mildewed area vigorously with the bleach. (As usual, wear rubber gloves and be sure the work area is well ventilated and that the bleach is confined to the tablecloth only. Avoid splashing it on clothes. Rinse the cloth well afterwards. The cloth should be good as new. Heloise DUST BRUSH Dear Heloise: I must tell you about the one piece of equipment that I use when cleaning house that I could never do without. It’s my big and old, three-inch, natural bristle paint brush!
It’s fantastic for dusting ornate frames on mirrors and paintings, louvered doors, carved furniture, pleated lampshapes, tops of door frames and for dusting a million other nooks and crannies! It gets where the vacuum dust brush won’t! I love it and I think you will too. Wanda Yoast. SAVE THE ENVELOPE Dear Heloise: When I tuck a birthday or anniversary card in with a gift, I don’t write the person’s name on the envelope because it’s on the package’s gift tag. There’s a good reason to leave the envelope blank: It can be used again. I’ve often found that there are moments when the one thing I need more than anything else in this world is a plain white envelope. Mary Hermann
