A time for play
Parks, sports, special events offer activity
By BARBARA CARHART Banner-Graphic Staff Writer There’s no place like home. And, as more than 29,000 Putnam County residents can attest, there’s nothing quite like familiar turf on which to romp and play after the work is done. For Putnam County, fun is spelled with a capital “F”. Here’s what the community serves up in the fun and games department: PARKS AND WATER SPORTS Robe-Ann Park: This 21-acre recreational area is owned by the City of Greencastle and managed by a fourmember Park and Recreation Board and a full-time superintendent. Located along U.S. 231 in the southeastern area of the city, the park features a lighted softball diamond, swimming pool, lighted tennis courts, shelterhouses and a bandshell. Playground equipment and basketball courts also are provided. The park is the site for Greencastle’s annual July 4 Fun Day celebration, which features one of Indiana’s most spectacular narrated fireworks displays. In May, the bandshell is the focal point of a concert featuring students from Greencastle’s middle school and high school. Other activities include organized adult softball leagues and Junior League Football for boys in the fall. The city also is seeking a grand to fund the purchase of additional gym equipment for younger children. Jaycee Park: The Greencastle Jaycees maintain this park, which offers picnicking, hiking and fishing near the local airport. A resident groundskeeper is employed to maintain the park, which will be the site of a new youth center. Cloverdale Park: Located in the county’s second largest community, the park is governed by a municipal park board. Plans are under way to construct rest room facilities and a softball diamond. The park is the site of town fund-raising events and a portion of the annual Spirit of Cloverdale festivities in July. Roachdale Park: This park, featuring playground equipment for children, is located in the Town of Roachdale in northern Putnam County. State parks: Six state parks-- Richard Lieber, Raccoon, McCormick’s Creek, Shad,es Shakamak and Turkey Run - are located within an hour’s drive of Greencastle. Available activities include camping, fishing, boating, hiking and swim-
