By BECKY IGO Banner-Graphic Area News Editor True or false: --Rural hospitals have a difficult time keeping up medically with their big-city counterparts. -Rural hospitals offer no more than the “basics” of medical care. -Rural hospitals cannot begin to attract the top physicians, surgeons, specialists and nurses that the major hospitals do in larger cities. IF YOU ANSWERED “False” to each question, you score high marks for realizing that quality care depends not upon size. But, if you have an aversion to taking quizzes, a brief discussion with Putnam County Hospital Director John Fajt can also dispell those myths often associated with small community hospitals. “In terms of our staff and our facilities, I can say we have one of the best equipped
hospitals in the State of Indiana,” Fajt said of the four-story structure, located at the south edge of Greencastle along U.S. 231. “We have all of the current state-of-the-art technology and our diagnostic capabilities are second to none,” the director added. THIRTY-TWO PHYSICIANS comprise the medical staff at the Putnam County Hospital, according to Fajt. These individuals have expertise in the areas of urology, ophthalmology, general surgery, pathology, radiology, anesthesiology, internal medicine and family practice. In addition, the hospital has access to four gastroenterologists, who come to the Greencastle facility on a one-day-per-week basis. But the Putnam County Hospital can also boast of 20 LPNs, 60 RNs and 80 aides, which make up the nursing staff. Put it all together and it stands for “quality care.” And, according to Fajt, he

Which certainly qualifies the statement, “How fast time goes when you're having fun.” S.C. Prevo came to Greencastle from Clark County, Illinois in 1900 to establish the model clothing store. He had definite and well-grounded ideas of service, and these same ideals which furnish the basis for Prevo’s standard of service today, enable him to develop the business rapidly. Changes have been made over the years to stay in tune with the times and the people. Today, eighty-four years later Dennis and Janet Cooper are keeping the Prevo's image alive, “Service is the hallmark of the operation" say the Coopers "and we're bringing back some lines that have been requested by our customers." Prevo's of Greencastle offers the same shopping opportunities for the lady that can be found in any of the major cities. And to peek into the not so distant future, shoppers will see improvements in cosmetics and children's wear, and the junior loft will always be a main o traction. would have it no other way. The hospital’s list of accredidations by major medical organizations is extensive. Each year, the hospital has received the highest rating possible from the Joint Commission on Accredidation of Hospitals. The 85-bed facility is also accredited by the Indiana Hospital Association. IN ADDITION, the Putnam County Hospital’s laboratory is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks and has received accredidation from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. All of the accredidations listed above are of a voluntary nature; it is not mandatory the hospital participate. But Fajt says there is a strong desire to be the best. “I think the accredidations we do have demonstrate the hospital’s continued commitment to excellence in patient care,” he stressed. “Since it is voluntary, I think this Continued on page 15
