Mallory Capacitor Co. Local plant into fourth facilities expansion

By BARBARA CARHART Banner-Graphic Staff Writer Mallory Capacitor Co., a major Greencastle employer since 1960, boasted a record output last year and the future promises to be even brighter. “So far this year, we’re running 24 per cent more production output than last year,” explained Verne Baker, plant manager. MEETING INCREASED demands of old customers while attracting new ones, Mallory is experiencing its fourth physical expansion in its 24-year history in Greencastle. The company is a division of EmhartCorp., Farmington, Conn. The company has leased the front portion of the Huber building, located immediately west of the plant, to meet increased production demand. Baker said the additional accommodations will add 7,200 square feet to present production space. “This move will expand operations, but considerable work has to be done before we move in,” the plant manager said. In addition to the physical expansion, the company is making room for $2 million worth of equipment for production and automation. AT THE HEART of the company are Mallory’s employees, who keep the machines running and the highly sensitive tantalum capacitors rolling off the production line. Record output already has meant an increase of about 80 jobs added to the 600 people already on the payroll. From the very beginning, the marriage between Mallory and the City of Greencastle has been blissful. “We located in Greencastle for two basic reasons: it is a good receptive community, and the labor market,” Baker recalled. “The quality of the workforce in Greencastle is outstanding. The people are good, dedicated, hard working and loyal.” THE EFFICIENCY and hard work of its employees allow Mallory to produce an average of 50 million of the tantalum capacitors annually. Eight varieties in varying sizes are produced. Tantalum capacitors produced in Greencastle are in-

stalled in high-flying aircraft, missiles and guidance systems, computers, telephone equipment, radios, military communications equipment, even pacemakers. Manufactured from tantalum ore, tantalum capacitors are the most reliable and have the longest life of all families of capacitors, Baker explained. The small storehouses of energy, designed to filter out undesirable fluctuations of electrical current, demand detailed specifications and careful handling. This is an expensive process, as the tantalum ore alone costs ths company more than $1 million yearly. With the local plant achieving record production, the effort obviously is worth the investment. Customers all over the world, including Germany and Japan, are pleased with the final product. MAINTAINING ITS reputation, the

company endured - and indeed has prospered from - various changes in its history. Until 1979, the company was a division of P.R. Mallory Co. The Dart Corp., a consumer products firm based in Los Angeles, took over P.R. Mallory in 1979, maintaining part of the company as Duracell, and selling the rest to Emhart Corp. in July 1979. Emhart Corp., Baker explained, is an old New England company that is one of the leading manufacturers of shoe-making machinery, glass containers and bottlemaking equipment, as well as industrial adhesives and refrigerator shelving for supermarkets. But in Greencastle, the word on the Mallory plant sign is “capacitor.” Judging from production figures, that should spell prosperity for another 24 years.
