People in the news Separate addresses due for DeLoreans LOS ANGELES (AP) No divorce proceedings have been started and “nobody’s seeing a lawyer,” but John De Lorean and his wife, Cristina, have moved to separate addresses as he continues his legal battles and she pursues a career as a talk show host. Confirmation of the separation came Tuesday from the attorney who successfully defended De Lorean, the former sports car manufacturer, on federal drug trafficking charges. De Lorean was acquitted Aug. 16. It was a little too much pressure for anybody to handle, said attorney Howard Weitzman. “Cristina was there, day and night. John was there, day and night. They decided to take a little bit of a break.” Weitzman denied that Mrs. De Lorean, a former model known professionally as Cristina Ferrare, had stayed by her husband’s side each day during his trial to impress the jury. When the verdict was read, she burst into tears and embraced her husband. “John’s been totally supportive of her; she’s been totally supportive of him,” said Weitzman. “This is real life.” Their two children are living with Mrs. De Lorean in a new Beverly Hills home, while De Lorean is living in West Los Angeles. • SAINT-PAUL-DE-VENCE, France (AP) - Actordirector Gene Wilder says he kept his wedding to comedian Gilda Radner a secret until the last minute because “I didn’t want the most beautiful day of my life to turn into a publicity operation.” Wilder, 49, and Miss Radner, 37, the actress-comedian who gained fame on the original cast of “Saturday Night Live,” were wed Tuesday in a private civil ceremony in the south of France. After the ceremony, attended by eight guests, Wilder said he had chosen the town for the wedding because, “When I took Gilda for a walk in the hills, she never before seemed so calm, so relaxed, so happy.” Miss Radner, who’s in Wilder’s latest movie, “The Woman in Red,” arrived at the town hall carrying her Yorkshire terrier Sparkle and a bouquet of orchids. • WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Actor Kevin McCarthy says his stage portrayal of Harry Truman is the most difficult acting job of his long career. The 70-year-old McCarthy is presenting “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry,” a one-man play by Samuel Gallu, through Sunday night at the University of Hartford’s Lincoln Theater in West Hartford. The actor, who starred in the 1956 movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and is frequently seen on TV, most recently in “Flamingo Road,” said Tuesday that his involvement with the Truman role over the past six years has brought a steadily growing respect for the Missourian who was president from 1945 to 1953. McCarthy says the most memorable of his Truman performances was one two years ago attended by Margaret Truman Daniel. Her review: “Kevin McCarthy is superb as my father.” • NEW ORLEANS (AP) A promoter has filed as 3 million suit against boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, his staff and manager for the cancellation of Mancini’s Sept. 8 fight with Kenny “Bang Bang” Bogner. The promoter, Barry Mendelson Presents Inc., charged negligent representation and breach of contract in the canceled fight.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Richard Basehart, an actor known to television viewers as Admiral Nelson on “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” died Monday at age 70. Basehart’s career began with his performance in “The Hasty Heart” in 1945. His motion picture debut was in “Cry Wolf” in 1945. Some of Basehart’s other films included “Reign of Terror,” “Titanic,” “Moby Dick,” “La Strada,” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau.” He also starred in the science-fiction TV series, “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” which ran from 1964 through 1968. One of Basehart’s last film appearances was in the 1979 movie “Being There.” In the fantasy-science fiction series, Basehart commanded the officers and men of the Seaview, a glass-nosed atomic submarine that roamed the seas fighting human and alien villains. Basehart, who starred as Admiral Nelson in the television series “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” narrated the closing ceremonies of the Olympics on Aug. 12 and suffered the first of several strokes hours afterward, his lawyer, Bruce Stiglitz, said Tuesday. He died in CedarsSinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he had been in a coma for several days, Stiglitz said. He also made many other appearances on television, including roles in “Naked City” and “Route 66,” as well as a short-lived series called “WEB.” Last fall, he narrated “Vietnam: A Television History” for the Public Broadcasting Service. • NEW YORK (AP) Former world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali checked into Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center Tuesday night to undergo further neurological tests. Ali, who left the hospital last Tuesday after a five-day stay, had been in West Germany on a business trip. He flew from London to New York Tuesday and told wellwishers at Kennedy International Airport: “I’m in a good shape. I’m a little tired, but I’m in good shape.” On Monday, a television interviewer in Frankfurt, West Germany, quoted Dr. Martin Ecker, who was traveling with Ali, as saying the retired fighter has “minor symptoms” of Parkinson’s Disease. • LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Gentle Ben, the television bear, and Wally “Famous” Amos, the cookie tycoon, are the newest admirals in the Great Navy of Nebraska. Ben and Amos, inducted Monday, thus join a list of luminaries, past and present, that includes Queen Elizabeth, Bing Crosby, the 129th Navy Seabees the cast of the movie “Terms of Endearment” and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since 1931, thousands of people have received admiral honors, which are accompanied by a plaque pledging obedience from “all officers, seamen, tadpoles and goldfish under his command."
