People in the news Jackson answers tabloids' gossip LOS ANGELES (AP) Singing superstar Michael Jackson is denouncing "unfounded and malicious gossip” that he maintains his high-pitched voice with hormones, has had plastic surgery on his eyes and cheekbones, and will never marry. The denials were issued in a statement which manager Frank Dileo said was intended to stop what he termed the rumors published by “cheap tabloids " Dileo declined to identify any publication by name. Jackson s statement, read by Dileo at a news conference Wednesday, also said that in the future, he intends to sue those who print “new fantasies.” “NO! I've never taken hormones to maintain my high voice,” Jackson's statement said. “NO! I’ve never had my cheekbones altered in any way. “NO! I’ve never had cosmetic surgery on my eyes. “YES! One day in the future I plan to get married and have a family. Any statements to the contrary are simply untrue.” Norman Winter, Jackson’s publicist, noted that Jackson has never denied undergoing plastic surgery on his nose a few vears ago. • CORONADO, Calif. (AP) Though his gourmet popping corn has come to account for a fourth of all popcorn sales in America. Orville Redenbacher still remembers the simple way it was prepared on his father’s Indiana farm: a handful of kernels cooked in a wire popper on a pot-bellied stove. “Nothing tasted better,” said Redenbacher, 77, whose bow-tied, salt-of-the-earth countenance has endeared him to television viewers nationwide. A native of Brazil, Ind., Redenbacher at first wanted nothing more out of life than to become a county agricultural agent in Indiana, an ambition he realized after graduating from Purdue University. His effort to improve the taste of popped corn began one night shortly before World War 11, when he sipped on some beer and munched a handful of popcorn that he said was flat and unappealing. “I decided there had to be a way to improve it,” said Redenbacher, who now makes his home in a luxury condominium overlooking Coronado Bay near San Diego. Working with a friend. Charles Bowman, Redenbacher formed Chester Inc. in Valparaiso. Ind., and the two began cross-pollinating one hybrid corn after another in their search for a tasty kernel. In 1971, the pair came up with a strain that consistently popped fluffy, light flakes. With the new popcorn ready for marketing, all that was left was to come up with a catchy title for the product. Redenbacher, troubled by ulcers in recent years, and Bowman sold their popcorn interests to Hunt-Wesson Foods Inc. in 1978 for a reported $2 million. One of the stipulations in the deal was that Redenbacher continue to represent the popcorn he invented. Pushing the product on television has made Redenbacher’s face and name familiar to millions of Americans. “They took a poll of grade school children in St. Paul, Minn., two or three months ago and asked if they ever heard of Walter Mondale, who is from Minnesota,” Redenbacher says. “Twice as many of those kids knew me.”

EILEEN BRENNAN Checking in
RANCHO MIRAGE. Calif. (AP) Actress Eileen Brennan, best known as the no-nonsense Army captain in the television series and film “Private Benjamin,” has checked into the Betty Ford Center to overcome dependency on prescription drugs, a spokesman said. Ms. Brennan was admitted to the center on Saturday, publicist Paul Burditch said Wednesday. He said Ms. Brennan was given the painkillers after she was critically injured when she was hit by a car. Ms. Brennan. 50, was hospitalized for months following the Oct. 27, 1982, accident. • Chris Schenkel, the veteran ABC broadcaster, will work his first Ray (Boom Boom) Mancini fight Saturday, when the former World Boxing Association lightweight champion begins a comeback against Kenny (Bang Bang) Bogner in New Orleans. But Schenkel has known Mancini for 16 years, from the time he was a guest speaker at a tribute in Youngstown, Ohio, to the fighter’s father, the original Boom Boom, Lenny Mancini. “Ray reminded me that we met long ago when I was in Youngstown when they were honoring this ex-fighter,” said Schenkel. “He told me he was 7 years old then. As soon as he told me, I recalled there was this cute little guy tagging along behind his father, who was unbelievably popular out there. I don’t think he’s changed a lot, but it made me feel old. “The only other time I felt the same way was when I was doing a world pool championship tournament in black suit at the Biltmore Hotel in New York Years ago, when I was still a bachelor, I used to date this exotic dancer named Brandy Martin At the pool tournament, they had all these Playboy bunnies around for some reason. One came up to me and said. ’Mr. Schenkel, I'm Brandy Martin's daughter.' I can’t tell you how old I felt.” CINCINNATI (AP) James Meredith, who made civil rights history 22 years ago by being the first black to enroll at the University of Mississippi, said he has made the final transition in his life from a soldier to educator. “I’ve been a soldier (for civil rights) all my life,” Meredith said Wednesday as he began a career as visiting professor of black studies at the University of Cincinnati. The 51-year-old lawyer with a post-graduate degree in economics said he hopes to establish a post-graduate course in black studies here, beyond the bachelor’s degree now offered.
