Highway experts predict 11 traffic deaths over Labor Day
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) An extra 400 troopers will be on duty in Indiana during the Labor Day weekend when traffic accidents are expected to claim the lives of 11 holiday travelers. The beefed-up patrols are part of Operation CARE, which stands for “combined accident reduction effort.” State Police Superintendent John T. Shettle said the federally funded project concentrates on Indiana’s most heavily traveled roads the interstate highways as well as U.S. 31 and 41 and Indiana 37. Troopers will be on the lookout for suspected drunken drivers and will be checking to make sure parents comply with Indiana’s child-restraint law for youngsters under age 5. Shettle encouraged all motorists to wear their seat belts. Last year, nine people died in Labor Day traffic accidents in Indiana. The counting period began at 6 p.m. Friday and will run through midnight Monday. The Hoosier Motor Club reports that motorists will have no trouble finding gasoline or diesel fuel during the holiday weekend. Club spokesman Hugh Orr noted that a survey of 176 gas stations showed that 77 percent plan to be open on Labor Day. The Hoosier Motor Club’s fuel gauge survey shows that the average price of all
Disappearing act Law library battling illegal book bandits
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The book bandits have struck an average of once a week this summer at the City-County Building Law Library. One by one, the library’s 15,000 legal volumes are disappearing. “I don’t think there is any intentional theft,” librarian Lynn Conner said, “but with a budget our size, every penny counts.” In the last three months, the library has lost five volumes of statutes and codes, six volumes of form books and encyclopedias, and another four volumes of treatises and periodicals, Ms. Connor said. The cost of the losses is compounded by the weeks it takes to replace the books, she
Man held may have info about Argos murder PLYMOUTH, Ind. (AP) Police are holding a Plymouth man they believe has information on the abduction and slaying of Darlene Hulse of Argos three weeks ago, Marshall County Prosecutor Fred R. Jones said. The man, who was extradicted from Colorado this week, was beingheld in the Marshall County jail on a 72-hour warrant that was scheduled to expire tonight. “We do not believe this is the person who committed the crime, but that he does have information he is not providing to us,” Jones said. Jones and Marshall County Police Det. David Yoquelet flew to Colorado this week to pick up the man and another man who has since been released. He did not say why the men were in Colorado. Though neither man is a suspect in the case Jones said, the development represents the strongest lead in the case so f3 Mrs Hulse, 28, was abducted from her a Ndter ofthe two men brought to Indiana was identified

grades of gasoline will be 131.9 cents a gallon this holiday than Labor Day in 1983. According to the survey, full-service fuel costs are: 140.1 cents for regular; 145.6 for unleaded; 153.7 for premium unleaded; and 137.5 for diesel. At self-service pumps, the survey found that the average price of a gallon of fuel is: 107.9 cents for regular; 114.3 cents for unleaded; 130.8 cents for premium unleaded; and 124.9 cents for diesel. State Highway Department officials are working to make sure holiday travel is safe and hassle-free. Director Gene K. Hallock said that construction work has been halted on heavily traveled roads to improve traffic flow. Project engineers were told to erect barricades, lights and signals around con-
added, and the loss of service during that time. To combat the problem, Ms. Conner taped a note on the front door of the library. “Attention: Due to the extent of theft of library materials, this library will no longer purchase any new books. The balance of our budget for 1984 will be spent on maintaining current subscriptions and replacing stolen materials. “If you have removed any library materials, I strongly urge you to return them. The effectiveness of this library depends on the cooperation and honesty of the attorneys, law clerks and paralegals

struction projects to alert motorists, Hallock said. In addition, the department’s Traffic Division will supply back-up personnel to repair malfunctioning signals, he said. Hallock noted that the maintenance division has arranged special work schedules for employees at highway rest areas so that they can provide adequate restroom supplies and litter disposal. Labor Day traditionally heralds the start of the fall political campaign. And in Indiana, the politicians will be on the hustings. Republican Gov. Robert D. Orr is scheduled to ride in the Blueberry Festival parade in Plymouth and do a little campaigning along the route. Lt. Gov. John M. Mutz plans to spend the day with his family.
who use this library.” Last year the library spent $52,793, a third of its budget, on new books, Ms. Conner said “What really hurts us is that the cost of books generally increases between 7 and 9 percent annually, while our budget increases are normally about 2 percent,” she explained. The books are supposed to be used only inside the library, Ms. Conner said. Besides attorneys and their aides, members of the public sometimes use the library, mostly for researching divorces or name changes.
