People in the news Reynolds' demise greatly exaggerated LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor Burt Reynolds could use some deliverance from an inner-ear infection and jaw and teeth problems, but he hasn’t been afflicted .with any “mysterious” ailment, an aide said. “Burt has had his physical problems, but he’s on the mend,” David Gershenson said Thursday. “It’s nothing serious.” Gershenson labeled as “total inventions” recent reports by star-watching tabloids that the 48-year-old Reynolds was suffering from a serious illness. Earlier this summer, Reynolds was knocked out of work briefly by a kidney stone, and since then reports have persisted of hiu medical problems. “He has not been well. He’s had an inner-ear infection, he’s had a jaw problem, he’s been having an incredible amount of dental work and he’s not been feeling well. But there’s nothing mysterious or ominous,” Gershenson said from Jupiter, Fla., where Reynolds operates a dinner theater. Gershenson noted that Reynolds was scheduled to begin post-production work in about two weeks on “Stick,” in which he directs himself playing an ex-convict. Meantime, “he’s riding horses, working out and visiting with his family,” Gershenson said. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Ten years after her husband’s testimony helped uncover the Watergate coverup, Maureen Dean is establishing herself as a stockbroker and wants to be known as “my own person, not just John Dean’s wife.” “It’s a very high-pressured job,” Mrs. Dean says. “I think I’m attracted to that. When the pressure’s on I seem to work better.” Mrs. Dean has been a career woman before, but to millions she is best remembered as the young, pristine and poised helpmate who sat in the hearing room day after day as Dean testified. Her nickname, Mo, became the title of her best-selling Watergate memoirs. At 38, Mrs. Dean is still blonde, still clean-cut and still married to Dean, who after a stab at running a syndicated radio show is now in investment banking. “We have a lot of fun talking about business,” she said. “I’m proud of him. He’s really happy. We’ve really grown together. Mrs. Dean is about to complete a 16-month training program at Shearson, Lehman-American Express, but she was already familiar with the stock market from years as an enthusiastic, if not hugely successful, investor. • LONDON (AP) A 16-page prose and poetry manuscript by the late John Lennon went for $22,880 as Beatles fans shelled out more than $269,000 for memories of yesterday at Sotheby’s auction house. The jewelars Asprey and Co. bought the manuscript Thursday for an anonymous client, Sotheby’s spokesman Anne-Marie Arpels said. The seller, Rod Murray, who shared an apartment with Lennon in Liverpool benore he became famous, said he was asked to join The Beatles but was unable to do so because he could not then afford a bass guitar. A restaurant chain, the Hard Rock Case, bought a number of items, including one of Ringo Starr’s snare drums for $1,430.

BURT REYNOLDS SUSAN GEORGE No mystery ailment 'Street-bright' role “Penny,” Susan George said, “is very smart, witty. I would say unlike myself. I would call myself street-bright.” Miss George was discussing the character she plays in “The Jigsaw Man,” the new spy thriller. Michael Caine plays Penny’s father, a British intelligence chief who has defected to the Russians, and Laurence Olivier plays his successor. “My knowledge,” the British actress went on, “does not come from books. This lady’s backgrounddoes come from books. Her childhood was that her father went to Russia many yyars ago, and she took on a new identity so as not to be involved with him and then he comes back into her life.” Miss George and Caine had acted together before, but working with Lord Olivier was something new for her. “The prospect of opening my mouth with such a legend was daunting,” Miss George said, but Lord Olivier became a friend. “I call him Larry because I had the pleasure of his asking me to do so,” she said. “Otherwise, I would have called him sir.” As for performing, Miss George said, “I’m a very instinctive actress, and I don’t in any way knock it. I’m not a Method actor. Neither is Michael. Neither is Larry. We all have that much very much in common. The only thing that one learns in one’s trade is to be instinctive 10 times over if that’s necessary. In other words, to make it new every time.” What’s Rob Reiner up to in the aftermath of the acclaim for “This Is Spinal Tap”? He’s making a romantic comedy called "The Sure Thing,” about two college students who learn about love in the course of a cross-country trip. “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” is coming back. According to Universal Pictures, the Steven Spielberg film has established a record for box-office grosses by amassing nearly $360 million in the United States and Canada between June 11, 1982, when it opened, and June 9,1983, when it was withdrawn from release. “E.T.” will be back on July 19, 1985. • CHICAGO (AP) Who’s Who in America spent 18 months looking for five eminent Americans to honor for their achievments, and picked Chrysler Corp. chairman Lee lacocca, writer Malcolm Cowley, DNA researcher Dr. Maclyn McCarty, sociologist Robert Merton and Claude Shannon, “the father of information theory.” The winners of the first Who’s Who in America Achievements each will receive SIO,OOO and a bronze statute.
