Mob dominates hotel union, report says
WASHINGTON (AP) Organized crime wields “substantial influence” over the hotel workers union and its huge locals in America’s gambling meccas, the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations said today. "Numerous officers and employees have documented ties to organized crime figures, and there is little doubt that Local 54 (Atlantic City) is now controlled, and Locals 226 (Las Vegas) and 30 (San Diego) have been* influenced in the past, by organized crime interests,” the panel said. The allegation was the central conclusion in a report the subcommittee was filing with the Senate today to end a threeyear probe of the 400,000-member Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union (HEREIU). The report also said that benefit plans for union members have been mismanaged and that “the membership

Ship with uranium cargo sinks in channel
c. 1984 N.Y. Times PARIS A French cargo ship that sank off the coast of Belgium Saturday night was carrying containers filled with a form of uranium used to make fuel for nuclear reactors, the ship’s owner and French government officials said Sunday night. An official in the French Ministry of the Environment, Jean-Claude Roure, said an investigation carried out by French maritime officials near the wreck revealed “no trace of radioactivity in the area,” indicating the containers had not broken during the collision. The ship, the Mont Louis, collided with a car ferry near Ostend, Belgium. The Compagnie Generale Maritime, which owns the Mont Louis, said it was carrying 450 tons of uranium hexafluoride, a mildly radioactive material that is an intermediate product in the production of

reactor fuel. The the material was in 30 containers. Guy Lengagne, the secretary of state for maritime affairs, said in a communique Sunday night that “the immersion of containers presents no danger” of nuclear contamination. The containers of uranium hexafluoride, he said, remained on board the vessel, and an examination of sea water collected from the area showed “no leakage.” The Mont Louis had taken on cargo, including the uranium hexafluoride, in Le Havre and Dunkirk, and was en route to Riga in the Soviet Union, where deliveries of the material are regularly made by French vessels. France makes the product in two plants and has commercial contracts to export it to the Soviet Union and other countries, Roure said. Roure said the sale of uranium
Mondale attacking 'negativism'
NORTH OAKS, Minn. (AP) - Walter F. Mondale, accusing President Reagan of waging an “entirely negative” campaign, is flying to Dallas today where the Republicans last week renominated the president and spent four days bashing Mondale and the Democrats. The major reason the Democraticpresidential nominee is going to Dallas is to raise money. He plans to return to Minnesota on Tuesday after stopping for a rally at the University of Illinois. In a five-minute paid political radio speech on Sunday, Mondale continued attacking the president on the issue of arms control. “No one can win an arms race,” he said. “If one side builds, the other side builds. If Mr. Reagan understood that, he would negotiate to freeze that competition. “Because he doesn’t understand, he has escalated the arms race,” Mondale said. Mondale also renewed his criticism of Reagan for referring to freeze supporters, of whom he is one, as jackasses. In speech Friday to a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Chicago, Reagan criticized advocates of a freeze. He said, “They may deny a freeze would reduce any incentive for the Soviets to return to the negotiating table and resume

against union leaders continuing in office after taking the Fifth Amendment, the panel called upon Hanley and the others to either resign or be removed by the membership through the union’s election process. In a written response to the report, the union denied any connections with organized crime and said the panel’s probe “was not a fair and impartial inquiry into the union’s operations.” “Rather, it appears to have been a premeditated effort on the part of the subcommittee to destroy the reputation and credibility of the union and its officers,” the union said. The investigation, the union charged, “relied upon unauthorized (Justice Department) ‘leaks’ and innuendo, as well as the testimony of convicted felons, admitted perjurers, psychopathic liars and thoroughly discredited witnesses.”
hexafluoride to the Soviet Union was a normal public commercial transaction. He said the product was not included on the list of strategic materials that the countries of the Western alliance are forbidden to transfer to Communist states. An official of the maritime company was quoted as telling Agence France Presse that the containers of radioactive material were in the forward part of the ship, which was untouched during the collision. The company also said all of the containers remained intact and on board the vessel. Maritime authorities in Cherbourg said Sunday night that “no pollution had been released in the vicinity of the wreck.” The authorities said in a communique that two patrol boats based in Cherbourg had investigated the area and collected water samples to be sent to Paris for examination. Anderson for Mondale
WASHINGTON (AP) - John B. Anderson, who ran for president as an independent in 1980, has decided to publicly endorse Democratic presidential nominee Walter F. Nondale, according to sources. The sources said negotiations are under way with Anderson, under which a third political party he organized would formally nominate Mondale and provide him with about $7.8 million in public funds. Anderson attracted more than 7 percent of the vote in the general election four years ago as an independent
the search for equitable and fair reductions. But that way of thinking only reminds me of what Sam Rayburn, a very wise Democratic speaker of the House, once said: ‘Any jackass can kick a barn down, it takes a carpenter to build one.’” Citing that remark and the parade of negative speeches at the Republican convention, Mondale told reporters that Reagan “hasn’t spelled out a single view at all of what he will do over the next four years.”
One witness singled out by the union was Joseph Hauser, a convicted swindler who told the senators that Hanley was handpicked for his job by Anthony “Big Tuna” Accardo, one of the reputed heads of the Chicago mob. Testifying under court order earlier this year, Accardo denied any links to the union. The subcommittee has asked the Justice Department to review Accardo’s testimony for possible perjury. The report said that “the evidence presented to the subcommittee indicates that organized crime interests, primarily in Chicago, have exerted substantial influence over the affairs of the international union.” It said the Atlantic City local is controlled by the Philadelphia crime family headed by Angelo Bruno until he was gunned down in 1980.
Atomic Energy Agency, the maritime company, CGM, said, “If there were any contact between the sea water and the uranium hexafluoride, the hydrofluoric acid that would slowly form would be diluted immediately and any radioactive pollution of the seawater would remain negligible with no consequences either for man or the environment.” Roure said recovering the containers was expected to be a routine matter. “CGM has consulted with its insurers and made it known that it intends to recover the product,” he said. “The boat is sitting in shallow water, so we should be able to recover the containers without any problem using routine techniques.” N The French cargo vessel was hit in right rear by a 15,000-ton West German ferry, the Olau Brittania, which was en route from Flushing, the Netherlands, to Sheerness, England.
running aginst Ronald Reagan and former President Jimmy Carter. His performance qualified him for public financing of a 1988 race if he met the qualifications for organizing a third political party. Earlier this year, Anderson announced he would not run again for president this year, but would go ahead with pulling together the National Unity Party, composed largely of supporters from the 1980 race. It was not clear if Anderson would campaign actively for Mondale.
“Instead of that he has resorted to harsh and in many ways personal attacks,” Mondale said. He said that “to call supporters of the freeze jackasses is an outrage.” The Democratic nominee also joined Common Cause, the citizens lobby, in criticizing the Reagan campaign for charging part of the president’s trip to Chicago to the taxpayers as “official travel.”

TRUMAN CAPOTE Cause still unknown Capote autopsy inconclusive LOS ANGELES (AP) - An autopsy on Truman Capote showed signs of epilepsy and phlebitis but nothing conclusive about what caused the flamboyant author’s death at age 59, before he could finish what he had said would be his last novel. The death came just one week after Capote collapsed from phlebitis at the home of writer Kurt Vonnegut on New York’s Long Island, Vonnegut said Sunday. Capote, who pioneered the “nonfiction” novel with “In Cold Blood,” died Saturday at the Bel-Air home of Joanne Carson, the second ex-wife of “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson. First winning acclaim at age 23 for “Other Voices, Other Rooms” and again a decade later for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” Capote had a yearning for celebrity that sometimes overshadowed his gifts, friends said. Mrs. Carson said she found Capote dead when she went to wake him from a nap. He would have been 60 on Sept. 30. A three-hour autopsy Sunday by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office proved “inconclusive,” spokesman Bill Gold said. “It was noted during autopsy that there were signs of infection in the legs and there was evidence of epilepsy,” he said. Prescription drugs found with Capote will be analyzed, Gold said. Until tests are completed in seven to 10 days, it will not be known if Capote’s body contained drugs or alcohol. “I’m an alcoholic. I’m a drug addict. I’m homosexual. I’m a genius,” Capote once wrote. “Of course, I could be all four of these dubious things and still be a saint. ” “Naturally he was gifted,” said author Studs Terkel in Chicago. “But the tragedy was a lot of it was wasted in gossipy chronicles. But ‘ln Cold Blood’ was a magnificent work, such compassion. Call it fiction if you will, it showed the darkness that may be in all of us.” At the time of his death, Capote had been working on “Answered Prayers,” a long-promised work that was already controversial because of published excerpts. “He always said this would be the last book he would ever write,” said Mrs. Carson. A private memorial service was scheduled Tuesday morning at the Westwood Village Mortuary.

spinal distortion. Vertebrae slip into abnormal positions, resulting in "pinched" and irritated nerves, which cause pain and even loss ot function of the affected body part. Poor posture, or even emotional tension, can be the root cause.
