New Twins show power
By KEN RAPPOPORT AP Sports Writer The Minnesota Twins got off on the right foot for their new owner ... and at the same time gave pitcher Ken Schrom an unexpected leg-up. Playing their first official game Tuesday night under Minneapolis banker Carl Pohlad, who took over the team from Calvin Griffith, the Twins routed the Seattle Mariners 9-2. And in doing so, the Twins supported their hard-luck right-hander with a 14-hit power show that included a 7-0 lead after three innings. “All those runs sure take a lot of the pressure off,” said Schrom, who pitched a five-hitter. “It’s a situation I haven’t been in.” Schrom, 3-5, had pitched well lately, but the Twins’ quiet bats turned those strong performances into defeats. The righthander had allowed two runs during his last 16 2-3 innings, but lost two games. “I figured I’d have to shut out the other team to win,” Schrom said. In other American League action, Detroit beat Cleveland 5-1 in the first game of a doubleheader before losing the nightcap 6-4, Toronto nipped Kansas City 6-5, Texas edged Baltimore 7-6, New York beat Milwaukee 7-4, Boston routed Chicago 14-4 and California turned back Oakland 7-3. Schrom allowed one hit a second inning infield single to Larry Milbourne during the first six innings. He pitched shutout ball until the ninth, when he gave up two runs on a run-scoring single by A 1 Cowens and a sacrifice fly by Bob Kearney. Kent Hrbek went 2-for-3, driving in four runs with a three-run homer in the first inning and an RBI single in the third before leaving with a slight muscle pull after five innings. “When Hrbek hit it (the homer) I felt like jumping up for joy,” Schrom said. “But I had to stay at an even keel because I didn’t want to let down like some pitchers do when they get early leads.” The Twins have now won eight of their last 10 games and lead California by IM> games in the AL West. Tigers 5-4, Indians 1-6 Detroit’s Doug Baker hit a bases-loaded triple and Ruppert Jones homered to back

the combined four-hit pitching of Juan Berenguer and Doug Bair in the first game. A five-run second inning helped Berenguer, 5-7, snap a three-game personal losing streak and record his first victory since June 16. Bair pitched the final 2 2-3 innings. Cleveland’s Pat Tabler hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game. Both Julio Franco and Mel Hall were safe on one-out infield hits and scored ahead of Tabler’s fifth homer of the season, on a 3-2 pitch from Dave Rozema, 7-3. Winner Neal Heaton, 8-10, gave up nine hits in five innings. Tom Waddell earned his fifth save. Red Sox 14, White Sox 4 Bill Buckner’s bases-clearing double keyed a five-run first inning and Boston went on to rout Chicago in a free-swinging game featuring 27 hits. Rookie Roger Clemens, 5-4, struggled through nine innings for the Red Sox, scattering 13 hits and striking out six. The Red Sox pounded out 14 hits themselves, including three homers, four doubles and a triple. With leadoff batter Wade Boggs homering off Richard Dotson, Boston exploded for five runs on three hits in the first inning and coasted the rest of the way.

Blue Jays 6, Royals 5 Hot-hitting Ranee Mulliniks drove in two runs with a double and a single to lead Toronto over Kansas City. Mulliniks, who has hit safely in 14 of his past 15 games for a .432 average, doubled home a run in Toronto’s three-run second inning and singled in another in the third. Doyle Alexander scattered seven hits in 61-3 innings to boost his record to 9-5. Rangers 7, Orioles 6 Curtis Wilkerson scored the tie-breaking run on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Tippy Martinez in the eighth inning as Texas defeated Baltimore. With the score tied 5-5, the Rangers loaded the bases in the eighth on singles by Wilkerson and Gary Ward and a walk to Buddy Bell before the wild pitch by Martinez, 4-7. After Larry Parrish was walked intentionally, Ward scored as Pete O’Brien bounced out for a 7-5 Ranger lead. The victory went to Odell Jones, the third Texas pitcher who fanned Eddie Murray to squelch a bases-loaded Baltimore threat in the sixth. Dave Schmidt recorded his seventh save after Ken Singleton singled home a run in the Baltimore ninth. Yankees 7, Brewers 4 Omar Moreno drilled three hit, including a two-run single to highlight New York’s six-run fourth inning, and Don Mattingly knocked in two runs as the Yankees downed Milwaukee. Ray Fontenot raised his record to 4-6, allowing four runs on 10 hits in six innings. Fontenot got relief help in the seventh from Jay Howell. Dave Righetti got the last out for his 17th save. Andy Beene, 0-1, suffered the loss in his first major league start. Angels 7, A’s 3 Reggie Jackson and Brian Downing slugged back-to-back homers in the fourth inning to spark California over Oakland as Ron Romanick and Bruce Kison combined on a six-hitter. Both homers were hit off Oakland starter and loser Lary Sorensen, 3-11. Jackson’s was the 494th of his career, moving him ahead of Lou Gehrig into 12th place on the all-time list.
