People in the news Amazing story: Spielberg to NBC c. 1984 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK--Steven Spielberg, the film director and producer, has agreed to produce an action-adventure television series for NBC that is expected to have its premiere in prime time during the fall 1985 season. The weekly half-hour series, which will be called Amazing Stories,” will be structured as an anthology of different tales, according to NBC. Spielberg will serve as executive producer for the series. “I would expect it to be a show with a lot of fun, great adventure and imagination, with nice touches of comedy where called for,” said Brandon Tartikoff, president of NBC, Entertainment. "It will be sort of a throwback, in some senses, to the great anthologies that were on television in the 19505, like ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ and ‘Twilight Zone.’” lartinkoff said that some of the stories might involve supernatural elements, “but not necessarily every week.” He added, “I would expect that if there was a story like ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ It could fit into this show as well as stories that might have turned up on ‘twilight Zone.’” The present agreement calls for a minimum of 44 episodes, or two seasons of shows. Spielberg, who is 36 years old, began his professional career in 1968 at Universal Television, where his first directorial assignment was on a segment of “Night Gallery,” which was broadcast on NBC. He has since directed “E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial,” the highest-grossing film of all time, along with such other major box-office successes as “Jaws,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and the current “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” “I feel good returning to the medium that gave me my first opportunity to direct,” said Spielberg in a statement released by NBC. “I am hopeful that ‘Amazing Stories,’ besides being entertaining, will also serve as a forum for the introduction of new talent, directors and film makers.” Tartikoff said that the show would probably be scheduled either for 8 or 9 p.m., but that the night of the week had not been decided. “I don’t expect it be aimed at a juvenile audience,” he said. “I think younger kids will enjoy the show, but I think it will be a general-audience-pleasing show, in the same way that a lot of Steven Spielberg’s movies appeal to a broad spectrum of the movie audience.” • NEW YORK (AP) Actor Tony Danza, best known for his role as the ex-boxer cab driver on the television series “Taxi,” says he was stunned after his conviction for assault and criminal mischief stemming from a fight with a restaurant security guard. “It was a shock,” Danza, 33, said Monday after a jury found him guilty. “I didn’t expect it. I was not guilty.” Also convicted was Danza’s friend, Albert Sinacori, 29, of Malverne. Both were allowed to remain free on their own recognizance pending sentencing Sept. 17. The charges carry a top penalty of a year in prison. Danza and Sinacori were charged with beating William Sawyer, 35, a guardnat the Mayflower Hotel, in the hotel’s ground-floor restaurant on Feb. 3. Sawyer said the men, loud and boisterous, attacked him when he asked them to quiet down as they were drinking in the restaurant’s bar.

ROBERT GOULET Case of exhaustion

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) Entertainer Robert Goulet, hospitalized for exhaustion, is expected to keep an engagement later this week at a Las Vegas Strip hotel, a spokesman said. Goulet, 50, checked into Desert Springs Hospital on Monday after complaining of feeling ill, said spokesman Norm Johnson. “His doctor diagnosed it as a case of exhaustion,” Johnson said. “We expect him to stay overnight, and to open Friday at the Dunes Hotel (in Las Vegas) as scheduled.” Goulet, a resident of Las Vegas, returned Sunday from concerts in Connecticut and the Catskills. He had suffered a stomach virus while appearing in Westport, Conn., last week, Johnson said. LONDON (AP) British actor Michael Caine says being poor wouldn’t bother him as much as what he would have to go through to get there. “I could handle the poverty. At least I think I could. I’ve done it before,” he was quoted as saying Monday in Woman’s Own magazine. “But what I couldn’t cope with is the event that wold make me poor,” said the 51-year-old star of such films as “Deathtrap” and “Educating Rita.” “You see money isn’t only money, he said. “Money represents success. If the money were to go, it would be because I’m not communicating. I’d be a failure. And that’s what I couldn’t cope with. Failure.” NEW YORK (AP) Actress Arlene Dahl, whose television appearances have included “The Love Boat,” was married to businessman Marc Rosen aboard a cruise ship at a time set by an astrologer, a publicist for Ms. Dahl said. The wedding ceremony was performed Monday by Capt. Arne Kvinnesland aboard the Sea Goddess I, which was bound for Monaco from Marbella, Spain. Ms. Dahl and Rosen were married at 11:48 am. the time set by an astrologer, according to Gustavus Ober, a publicist for the actress. It was her fifth marriage, Ober said. • VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) Tennis superstar Martina Navratilova is moving out of her $600,000 waterfront home here to go back to Texas, associates say. “She made the decision to return to Dallas, where she’s lived longer and has more friends,” said James A. Howard, a Norfolk lawyer who has represented Miss Navratilova. One of several homes owned by Miss Navratilova, 27, is in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.
