Dear Abby : Poor expectant mother worries her dog food diet will harm baby
DEAR ABBY: Is it harmful for a person to eat dried or canned dog food? Due to the economics of our household, we don't qualify for any government food program. I am 4 1/2 months pregnant and have been eating Purina Dog Chow as a source of protein, and I'm worried about the effect it could have on me or my unborn baby. Can you give me any information on this product? Thank vou. —HUNGRY IN ST. PAUL DEAR HUNGRY: 1 contacted the Ralston Purina Co. and was told by a spokesperson that pet food is not recommended for human consumption. 1 pressed for more information and asked, “Is it harmful for humans?” hut was told again only, “Our pet food is not recommended for human consumption.” So, if you’re eating dog chow

Notes and Quotes Proper pot vital to canning success
Compiled by BETTY H. SENDMEYER Extension Home Economist Here are some tips for protecting your electric kitchen range while canning your favorite fruits and vegetables: 1) The large diameter of most waterbath or pressure canners, combined with high heat settings for long periods of time, can shorten the life of regular surface units and cause damage to the cooktop. If you plan to use the cooktop for canning, you should install a canning kit. The kit can be ordered from your favorite appliance dealer. 2) USE ONLY flat-bottomed canners for best results. Some canners have ridged bottoms (porcelain enamelware) and are not recommended. They do not make good contact with the surface unit and cause

You should he eligible for some kind of assistance. * * * DEAR ABBY: To get right to the point, 1 had a big crush on a guy at work, and we kidded around a lot. I’d better tell you up front I’m a woman, I’m 5 foot h and weigh over 200, and this guy is so good-looking he is out of sight. After an office party he stopped by my place and I finally had my fantasy fulfilled. He went to bed with me. I thought I died and went to heaven. That was the beginning of a love affair on my part, hut a convenient quickie, drop-in kind of arrangement for him. He never stays more than 30 minutes. He has never taken me out in public and has

severe overheating which damages the cooktop. 3) For best results, use a canner which can be centered over the surface unit. Large diameter canners, if not properly centered on the surface unit, trap heat and cause damage to the cooktop. 4) Do not place a canner on two surface units at the same time. Excessive heat build-up will damage the porcelain cooktop. 5) Alternate surface units if you do not have a canning kit. This allows the surface units to cool down between batches. 6) START WITH hot water. This reduces the time the control is set on high. 7) Keep the reflector bowls clean for best heat reflection. 8) Can light loads and small batches at a time. Try to avoid canning all day.
asked me not to tell anyone about “us.” Last night we had a light because 1 wanted him to take me to a movie. He said he didn’t want to he seen with a “cow.” What should 1 tell him when he comes over again looking for instant —BACK-STREET “COW” DEAR “COW”: Tell him you’re not in the mooed—and kick him out. * * * DEAR ABBY: 1 don’t know why I’m writing this. I guess I just want to get it off my mind since I have no friends to talk to. Why? I am an extremely attractive young woman with a good personality and a great body. I am a very sensitive and caring person, but women are afraid that I will steal their husbands, boyfriends and lovers. I would never think of doing that, Abby. Men rarely ask me out. I guess they assume I already have a boyfriend. I lead a very lonely life. 1 haven’t been on a date in over six months. Men stare at me, but they don’t approach me. I went to a party around Christmastime—there must have been 10 men to every woman. No one spoke to me and I was there for three hours. I don’t know why I stayed that long. I hope you will print this letter. I guess I want to say that looks aren t everything. In fact, they haven t done a thing for me. —GOOD-LOOKING AND LONELY DEAR LONELY: There’s an old saying, “A beautiful woman

is one I notice. A charming woman is one who notices me.” You may have beauty, but I suspect you lack charm—a quality that pays far bigger dividends than beauty. When you walk into a room, instead of saying, “Here I am,” say, “There you are!” Let your attitude express an interest in someone other than yourself. Don’t wait for someone to extend a friendly hand. Extend yours. Good looks never hurt anyone’s chances. But don’t expect them to open all the doors for you, or you will be lonely forever. * * * DEAR ABBY: “A Friend in Mill bury, Mass.” wrote to say that money is a notorious germ carrier—that each time paper money passes from one pair of hands to another, it becomes filthier. “Friend” went on to say that he would not eat in an establishment where the person who handles the money also handles the food. As a 30-year owner of a fast-food restaurant, 1 have heard this story many times. It is not true. To support my statement, I submit this article that appeared in the Rochester (N.Y.) Times-Union in April 1973: “MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)-Green-backs dirty? No more than the silverware you eat with. “A year-long study by Memphis and Shelby County health officials of 150 Memphis restaurants and food stores concluded that dollar bills are often cleaner than the knives and forks. ‘Frankly, I was flabbergasted,’ Don Daffron, who

But it was relatively clean.’ “He said $1 hills average 8,080 organisms per half side, less than knives and forks checked by food inspectors. “Dimes and pennies averaged only 03 organisms per side, while quarters had 1,050,, nickels 1,430 and half dollars 208. “Daffron theorized that there were
