Dear Abby
DEAR ABBY: Please do us older people a favor and print this. I cannot describe my frustration at picking up my telephone just in time to hear the caller hang up on me! Why in the name of heaven would anybody make a telephone call and hang up after the third or fourth ring? Unless one carries a cordless telephone around, it takes at least five or six rings before most people can answer it. Sometimes I’m in the laundry room or busy elsewhere and can’t hear the phone ringing until it has rung three or four times. When 1 call a friend, I always let the phone ring at least 10 times. Then if nobody answers, I assume he’s not home. GIVE ME A BREAK DEAR GIVE: Here’s your break; hope it helps. I wonder how many people have broken arms, legs, shoulders and hips because while they were in the bathtub, the yard, in the middle
All-black wedding trendy new way to tie knot
Newhouse News Service NEW YORK The five bridesmaids wore black. The maid of honor wore red. The bride wore white. After the wedding guests recovered from the visual shock, the bride says, they pronounced the unusual color scheme “elegant and sophisticated.” Maura Lee Wood and Roy P. Wood Jr., the June newlyweds, still are receiving compliments about the theme that was carried out in red cummerbunds and bow ties with the men’s black tuxedos, and in black, red, silver and white decor for the reception. An owner of the bridal shop that supplied the dresses says it was a first, but that two or three more black-theme weddings now are in the works for fall. “People saw these dresses and asked about them; I would think it’s (he beginning of a new type of trend,” says Nancy Tirelli, co-owner of New York’s Unique
Clark weds Black during June 9 ceremony
Vonda Jean Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Clark, Greencastle, and Stephen A. Black, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Kenneth Black, Terre Haute, were united in marriage June 9 at the First Baptist Church, Greencastle. Rev. James Moore officated at the wedding. The altar was decorated with three candelabra and ferns. PRECEDING THE WEDDING ceremony, Dorisann Albright, organist, played a selection of songs. Kevin Phillips and Max Phillips played guitars and sang “I Will” and “Your Song.” “Make Love Stay” was sung during the ceremony. Also, a tape of the bride and bridegroom singing “Annie’s Song” was played while they lit the unity candles. The bride, who was presented in marriage by her parents, wore a gown of white chantilly type lace with ruffle tiered skirt and off-shoulder yoke of net edged with a bertha ruffle and schiffli embroidered trim. The gown had a castilian cathedral train. Her veil was a halo of white silk flowers with satin ribbon streamers in back and was fingertip length. She carried a bouquet of white roses, white gardenias, pink, yellow, blue, lavendar, green and peach bachelor buttons and baby’s breath. She also carried a white lace handkerchief which belonged to her grandmother. KAREN WEBB, FRIEND OF the bride, served as maid of honor. Sandi Clark, sister-in-law of the bride, Becky Bee, friend of the bride, Velvet Cantonwine, sister of the bride, Angie Davis, cousin of the bride, and Sherry Wheeler, friend of the bride were bridesmaids. Andrea Clark, niece of the bride, was the flower girl. The attendants wore floor-length gowns of polyester knit with attached chiffon capelets in pink, yellow, blue, lavendar, green and peach. They wore a flower comb in their hair to match their dresses. They also wore bracelets given to them by the

of scrambling an egg or otherwise occupied, the telephone rang and they ran to answer it? * * * DEAR ABBY: My husband and 1 haven’t had any sexual relations for seven months. He doesn’t even kiss me. Says he’s too tired. I’ve tried to talk to him about it, but he says there’s nothing to talk about, he’s just getting old. (He’s 38 and I’m 33.) This is the second marriage for both of us. We’ve been married for three years. For the first two years, he couldn’t get enough of me. Now, nothing! I love him very much and will not seek sexual fulfillment elsewhere. I know he’s not cheating on me because he never goes anywhere except to work, and then he comes directly home. He has become very slovenly about his appearance. He takes a bath only at my insistence — about every two weeks.
Bridal. “People are more sophisticated about everything today.” The Woods had known they were going beyond the traditional colors for a wedding, and so kept it a secret from the 200 guests. “We didn’t want to hear negative comments before the wedding,” Mrs. Wood says. Tara Lee Di Laura of Syracuse, N.Y., one of the bride’s four sisters who were in the wedding party, says, “Once we got dressed, we felt beautiful.” But Last winter, when Tara first learned about the long, black taffeta dresses with ruffled tops and tiny straps, she thought her sister was kidding. The gowns were accessorized with white face veils and white gloves, and the attendants carried red and white bouquets of roses. Black and red pumps with matching stockings completed the ensembles. Sharon A. Lee, the maid of honor, was in college at Vanderbilt University in Ten-

He will not admit there’s a problem, but there must be. He says he feels fine, but he seems depressed and unhappv. Please help me. DOWNHEARTED DEAR DOWNHEARTED: Yours is one of the most difficult problems a faithful, caring person has ever had to face—getting someone who is obviously sick but refuses to admit it to a doctor. Beg, plead, bribe, threaten. Do whatever is necessary to get him into his doctor’s office, including calling the doctor and asking his advice. Your husband needs a thorough physical examination. * * * DEAR ABBY: I learned in school that when Columbus discovered America, the American Indians were already here, but I would like to
nessee when her sister Maura called her about the dresses. “I gasped,” Sharon recalls. “But I knew her taste, and I knew if Maura was going to do this, it would be nice.” On a videotape of the wedding, reactions of surprise are visible on the faces of the guests as the first bridesmaid in black proceeded up the aisle of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Staten Island. James Smith, banquet manager of the reception hall, remembers his reaction when the bridal couple came in to talk about the wedding reception: “I gave them my usual talk, explaining that we try to carry through the colors used in the wedding party, and asked them what their color scheme was. They said, ‘Black and red.’ I was shocked. “Then I thought about it, and said, ‘lf you’re going to do it, we should go all the way.” The color scheme was carried out in the tablecloths, floral arrangements, even

know where the Indians came from. LIKES TO LEARN (12 YEARS OLD) DEAR LIKES: The Encyclopedia Britannica says that the North American Indians probably migrated to the Americas from Asia. Some 15,000 to 25,000 years ago they crossed from northeast Asia to the Bering Strait. By the time the Europeans arrived in the 15th century, waves of these Asiatic migrants had spread over the Americas. * * *. the wedding cake. But, Smith notes, “It is not easy to buy black candles in June. ” Mrs. Wood didn’t plan to have an unconventional wedding. When she went with her mother and some of the bridesmaids to look at dresses at Unique Bridal, an Alfred Angelo prom dress in black taffeta caught her eye. “I loved it, but I said, ‘I don’t know about black.’ Nancy (Tirelli) said, ‘lf you like it, go for it.’ I went home and thought about it. ‘You’re the bride,’ people told me.” Mrs. Wood considered that the dress would be wearable later. “It’s expensive to be a bridesmaid. I have four bridesmaid dresses in my closet. I’ve worn one of them once since the weddings.” She borrowed one of the black gowns to take on her honeymoon cruise: ‘“What a beautiful gown,’ other guests at the captain’s table said. I just pretended it was part of my everyday wardrobe.”
