Record year for color TVs, VCRs expected WASHINGTON (AP) Another record sales year appears to be in prospect for color TV sets and video recorders, according to the latest industry figures. Data for the first six months of 1984, released Sunday by the Electronic Industries Association, show color TV sales climbed 20 percent over the same period last year, while VCR sales exploded another 84 percent. We really expect to see another banner year this year,” said Allan D. Schlosser, an EIA spokesman. The continued climb in sales was attributed to the general economic recovery, introduction of TV sets with technological features that produce a better picture, price-cutting on VCR units, and decisions by consumers to upgrade their TV sets for use with VCR’s, computers and video games. While no figures are available on how many units actually are bought by consumers each week, the industry group’s tabulations of sales by manufacturers to retailers are viewed as providing the best gauge of sales activity. The new statistics showed more than 2.9 million VCR's were sold by manufacturers to retailers during the first half of 1984, up 84.4 percent compared to the 1.6 million sold during the first six months of 1983. Sales of color TV sets during the first half of 1984 surpassed the 7.3 million mark, up 20 percent compared to the 6.1 million sets sold during the same period last year. Sales of large-screen projection TV sets also continued to climb, rising 38.5 percent to 78,073 during the period compared to 56,374 in the first half of 1983. The only piece of television equipment showing a decline in sales was black-and-white TV sets. Their sales sagged 16.8 percent, from 2.63 million during the first six months of 1983 to 2.19 million during the period this year. With the exception of black-and-white sets, the latest sales gains come on top of records set in 1983. Last year, manufacturers sold slightly less than 14 million color TV sets to dealers, and doubled their sales of VCR units from 2 million in 1982 to 4.1 million in 1983. Computers aid energy savings MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Computerized energy management systems can save between 15 and 30 percent of the estimated $66 billion spent annually on electricity and fuel by commercial facilities in the United States, according to William W. George. George, a Honeywell executive, says no more than 2 percent of the 2.25 million commercial buildings in the nation are equipped with modern microprocessor-based energy management systems. To help cut energy expenditures in small to medium-sized buildings, George says his firm has introduced a temperature control system that can be operated from a central terminal about the size of a personal computer.
