People in the news Acting legend to join soap opera Monday night, on West 42d Street, Dame Judith Anderson will have a theater named for her, but in a month she will be hard at work in a venture unusual for the woman who towered as Medea, plotted as Lady Macbeth and fried as Mrs. Danvers in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca.” She will be starting work on a new daytime drama, “Santa Barbara.” “It doesn’t matter what I’m doing," the 86-year old blueeyed Australian-born actress said. “We live, we breathe, we experience, we die, we love, we hate, we experience beauty and tragedy, and we find it in the parts we play. Whatever I do, I’m passionate about, and I’m passionate about this. ” “We screwed up our courage before asking her,” said Jerome Dobson, who, with his wife, Bridget Dobson are something of soap opera royalty. They have worked on “General Hospital,” “One Life to Live” and other series. “She’s going to help define her role,” Mrs. Dobson said. “This lady is a fabulous actress, and wants to get into the very gut and soul of this person. “She’ll be playing the matriarch of a once very wealthy family on the decline, who is fighting regain it. She has wastrel son who has squandered everything, and she is going to take matters into her own hands.” “I’ve loved ‘General Hospital’ for years,” Dame Judith said. “Once, when I traveled on tour, I was more upset than anything else by the fact that I was going to miss it. The actors are wonderful. The plots are wonderful, and, except for the immorality, of which I heartily disapprove, I love the soaps.” Dame Judith said she has warned Mr. and Mrs. Dobson, the executive producers of a series, to be broadcast on NBC, “of all the hazards, my physical well being and not-so-well-being, and my memory, which isn’t always as great as it should be.” “I love to work that’s the most important thing,” Dame Judith said. “It’s no good just being distinguished. When I was working on the ‘Star Trek’ movie that just opened, the entire crew stopped shooting one day for me to sing ‘There Is Nothing Like a Dame’. And I loved it. “I think I’m in a most noble profession, and I can’t wait to get to work on this project. Of course, since we’ll be up against ‘General Hospital,’ I’ll have to tape it every day, but that’s all right.” • LONDON (AP) Ballet great Mikhail Baryshnikov and Ingrid Bergman’s daughter, model Isabella Rossellini, begin work this month on a dance film about a Soviet defector back on home soil after a 10-year absence. “The film is not a reflection of my life and situation,” said Baryshnikov, artistic director of New York’s American Ballet Theater, who defected to the United States in 1974. “For years, I always got the same script Russian ballet star defects to the West. “With this one, I got excited. I said, ‘ ... Let’s try it.’” In the $lO million Columbia Pictures movie, “White Nights,” Miss Rosselini, 31, plays a Soviet interpreter married to an expatriate American dancer played by three-time Tony Award nominee Gregory Hines living in the Soviet Union. Asked Sunday why she waited so long to take on a major movie role, Miss Rosselini said, “I was afraid of people asking me about living up to my mother.” Directed by Taylor Hackford and choreographed by Twyla Tharp, the film is due for release in December 1985.

LARRY WILCOX CHiP off old block

RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - Larry Wilcox, the 1965 Rawlins High School graduate who made good as Officer John Baker on the television series “CHiPS,” met a real highway patrolman on a recent trip home. Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Don Sherrod "was very pleasant when he gave me the ticket” for speeding, Wilcox said. Wilcox said he found the first few years of celebrity fun, “but the materialism wore off quickly and I discovered that money is not the true measure of success.” Coming from a town of about 12,000 in Wyoming “gives one a good foundation and keeps you aware of who you are,” he said, adding he enjoys returning to Wyoming “because of nature.” Wilcox and his fiancee, Marlene Harmon, visited his 90-year-old grandmother on her ranch north of Rawlins and his brother, Randy, who is serving a term at the State Penitentiary for a 1982 arson. Wilcox said he still believes his brother innocent. • NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. Bidding started at $50,000 and was raised in $5,000 increments until it reached $75,000, when it was raised at SI,OOO increments.
