Navratilova favored to beat Evert Lloyd

WIMBLEDON (AP) Kathy Jordan doesn’t think Chris Evert Lloyd is in Martina Navratilova’s league. Despite Lloyd’s thrashing of third seed Hana Mandlikova in the semifinals of the All England Lawn Tennis tournament, Jordan doesn’t “give Chris much of a chance" in Saturday’s final between the three-time Wimbledon champion and Navratilova, a four-time and defending Wimbledon champ and Grand Slam titlist. “I hope she gives Martina a good match, but I have seen the past results, and it hasn’t been that close,” Jordan said after being ousted by Navratilova 6-3, 64 in Thursday’s other semifinal. McCormick following family's Olympic diving tradition

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kelly McCormick and Chris Seufert, rivals but close friends for most of their careers, are on their way to Los Angeles as members of the United States Olympic team. McCormick, who was born nearly four years after her mother, Patricia, won her third and fourth Olympic golds in sweeping the springboard and platform diving at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, captured first on the 3-meter board Thursday at the U.S. Olympic diving trials. McCormick, 24, scored 559.35 points. Seufert, 27, was second at 545.55. Wendy Wyland, winner of the springboard preliminaries, was third at 525.75. And Megan Neyer, 1982 world champion in the event, was fourth at 520.29. “We root for each other,” said McCormick, who gave Seufert a big hug when it was certain she had earned an Olympic

On that historic turf today, John McEnroe, bidding to become the first American since Don Budge in 1938 to repeat as singles champion, faced an unexpected semifinal challenge from unseeded Pat Cash. The 19-year-old Australian right-hander gained the last four by ousting sixth seed Andres Gomez of Mexico in the quarter-finals. The other men’s semifinal featured No. 3 seed Jimmy Connors - playing in Wimbledon’s 'semis for his eighth time and No. 2 Ivan Lendl, the Czechoslovak ace who upended McEnroe in the finals of the French Open on clay four weeks ago

Sullivan singled. Custis’ fifth inning double was the only extra base hit of the game. Carmel gave little ground, but Greencastle used what they gave. Scott Dunn, Custis and Greenlee led off the bottom of the first inning with three straight walks. Dunn and Custis scored when Smith put the first ball in play off the bat and Carmel committed its only error. SULLIVAN LED OFF the second for Greencastle with a single and scored on Custis’ sacrifice. Dunn, who reached on a fielder’s choice, made it 4-0 when he scored on Smith’s single. Greencastle took a 5-0 lead in the fourth on singles by Custis and Greenlee and moved ahead 7-0 in the fifth. Outstanding rookies lead all-star reserves

NEW YORK (AP) Two rookies Juan Samuel of the Philadelphia Phillies and A 1 Davis of the Seattle Mariners and 10 other first-time All-Stars are among the 24 reserves chosen for Tuesday’s All-Star Game in San Francisco. Samuel, Davis and pitcher Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets will be the only rookies on the two squads, which were completed with the announcement of the reserves today. Davis, catcher Dave Engle of the Minnesota Twins, second baseman Damaso Garcia of the Toronto Blue Jays and Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees are the first-timers for the American League. The eight National League reserves making their All-Star debut are Samuel, catchers Bob Brenly of the San Francisco Giants and Jody Davis of the Chicago Cubs, shortstop Rafael Ramirez of the

Let’s go.’” “We watch for each other and cheer for each other all the time,” said Seufert. “It (the relationship) just happened along the way,” said Seufert. “We were just at a lot of meets together. I don’t know, I just seem to have some kind of effect on her. She calls me mom. We make bets, and we call each other on the phone all the time.” While Neyer was battling the tears of disappointment, Seufert was crying that her father wasn’t at the Indiana University Natatorium to share her joy at making the Olympic team. He died in March of a heart attack. “I just wish he was here,” she said. “But, he is here (in her heart). I know it, and he’ll be there (the Olympics).” Seufert, who noted her father was a skeptic when she first began diving about

Connors has the edge in his career series with Lendl, 11 -5. But Lendl has won most of their recent meetings, including this year’s Volvo Masters indoor tournament and the WCT Tournament of Champions at Forest Hills in New York on clay. In the latter, Lendl demolished Connors 6-0, 6-0, the only time in his pro career that Connors has been shut out. Lloyd, who dominated women’s tennis for a decade and took singles titles here in 1974, 76 and 81, has been overshadowed on the women’s circuit by the seemingly invincible Navratilova, who already has beaten Lloyd four times this year. After Lloyd’s loss two weeks ago to Jordan in the semifinals of the Eastbourne,

Seufert, who thought about retiring from diving in 1982, was also a member of the U.S. Olympic team in 1980 which was unable to go to Moscow due to President Carter’s request the nation not compete in protest of Soviet military policy in Afghanistan. “In 1980, I made the Olympic team and the chance to dive in the Olympic Games was taken away from me,” she said, adding that the boycott upset her. “I was very bitter, because it was just something that somebody took away from me and then it just had no effect on what the whole purpose was behind it anyway.” The trials continue today with Wyland. the world champion platform diver, and Neyer turning their attention to the 10-

Best bass fishing early or late in day

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The best fishing in Indiana this weekend will be for bluegill, and largemouth bass angling will be at its best during the early morning and late evening, the Department of Natural Resources says today. Storms and high winds kept fishermen off Lake Michigan during the past week, but the DNR says fishing is good for coho in 50-60 feet of water. The fish are averaging 4-7 pounds Chinook and steelhead trout are also listed as good. Elsewhere in northern Indiana, the DNR says: Willow Slough has good bluegill fishing. Bass Lake reports good fishing for walleye and bluegill. Worster Lake offers good bluegill fishing. Huntington Reservoir has good to excellent fishing for crappie and catfish and good fishing for white bass.

England, grass court tournament, tennis pundits began asking if she’s got what it takes to stay in the top echelon of the women’s game. When Lloyd struggled to victories against Betsy Nagelsen in the second round and Annabel Croft in the third here, some of the other players including Jordan, Mandlikova and fourth seed Pam Shriver began saying Lloyd wasn’t showing the stuff of which Wimbledon finalists are made. “This is not the Chris of old,” declared Shriver. Lloyd heard those comments, bit her tongue and, in her words, “just let (my) tennis do the talking.” Her 6-1, 6-2 trouncing of Mandlikova left

The top two finishers in each event qualify for the U.S. Olympic team. In Thursday’s men’s springboard prelims, Louganis began his bid to become the first male in diving history to capture Olympic gold medals in both springboard and platform competition, by placing first. Louganis, 24, scored 710.94 points to lead 12 competitors into the finals. Ron Merriott, 24, finished a distant second. The 1982 NCAA 3-meter champion from the University of Michigan had 655.47 points. Veteran David Burgering, a teammate of Louganis on the 1980 Olympic team, was

Last year’s All-Star Game MVP, Fred Lynn, will also not play this year, although Lynn finished sixth among outfielders in the fans’ balloting.

McCormick, who said she never discusses diving with her mother, took the lead with her third dive and was never caught. She opened a commanding lead on her seventh jump, a 2M> somersault from the pike position, which received three perfect scores of 10 from judges along with a 9.5 and three9s. “I tried to approach this meet like any other, but I wasn’t able to do that,” she said, adding that a recent talk with her coach (Vince Panzano) gave her a major boost. “He made me open my eyes. I was afraid to do much off the board because my back was bothering me. He said I could get treatments for the back, give up diving or instead of quitting just stop feeling sorry for myself.”
