Dear Abby ! Math stumps woman, needs help from ground up
DEAR ABBY: So you think you’ve heard it all? Well, please don’t make a face or roll your eyes up into your head when you find out what I want. First off, I am no dummy, but there are times when I think I am. There may be others who suffer from the same problem. If so, you may print this, but for heaven’s sake don’t use my name. I am a 22-year-old married woman who is absolutely stupid when it comes to math! I can count money, and if I take my time I can figure out how much to tip, but if I’m in a big hurry I draw a complete blank! Recently I went to a sale where all merchandise was marked 25 percent off, and I felt like a fool because I couldn’t figure how much I’d have to pay for a dress marked sllO. I know they offer classes for people who are illiterate, but how about people who need to learn math from the bottom up? I’m ashamed to admit I need that kind of help. (Nobody would believe it.) PENNSYLVANIA DUMMY DEAR PENNSYLVANIA: I wouldn’t call anyone a “dummy” who recognizes a problem and

seeks to solve it. Call your county department of public education and explain your need to learn math “from the bottom up.” Inquire about adult education classes and private tutoring, and your problem should be as simple to solve as adding 2 and 2. (It figures.) * * * DEAR ABBY: I’ve followed your Fat Fannie Panty Hose comments with amusement and feel it is my duty to share with you one more use for old panty hose—Fat Fannie or otherwise. I cut the leg portion into three pieces, and use them to tie up my tomato plants. The stretchy material doesn’t “bite” into the stem as the plant continues to grow. IRENE IN COLUMBUS DEAR IRENE: Thanks for an idea tomato growers will dig. Panty hose were created for “tomatoes” in the first place. * * * DEAR ABBY: “Animal Lover’s”

letter suggesting caution in giving dogs to new owners by way of want ads brought to mind a story I heard. There was this sicko who collected kittens—he answered ads reading “Free to good home.” Upon investigation, it was found that he collected kittens to feed to his pet boa constrictor! How can we protect these helpless creatures 9 ANOTHER ANIMAL LOVER DEAR LOVER: Never give more than one pet to a person. And before giving the “helpless creature” away, be sure to tell the prospective owner that you will be dropping by from time to time to see how the little fellow is getting along. * * * CONFIDENTIAL TO OLDTIMER IN PASADENA: Before you put down the youth of today, read this: “Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders, and love chatter in places of

Dishwashing liquid formula rids plants of spider mites
DEARHEIDISE: Four tablespoons of dishwashing liquid in one gallon of water will get rid of red spider mites on your plants. Spray the plant weekly until there are no signs of the mites. I also had mold in the soil of some of my plants. I used a solution of one tablespoon of vinegar in two quarts of water, then watered weekly with the solution until all the mold was gone. I saved a lot of plants following these formulas especially when red spider mites hit a lot of them. I also used this treatment for spider mite on outside marigolds and it worked. exercise. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” Socrates wrote that in the fifth century B.C. * * * CONFIDENTIAL TO WEIGHTCONSCIOUS: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your normal weight for the rest of your life is what you weighed when you were 25 years old. * * * (Is your social life in a slump? prepare the jelly glasses first. I cut paraffin slivers directly into the jar (about one-half inch of paraffin slivers to each jar), then make the jelly. The jelly has to be hot to melt the wax so be sure you use canning jars that can withstand the heat. When it is finished and boiling hot, I pour the jelly into the glasses. The paraffin rises to the top and makes a perfect seal. No pan with paraffin to wash. Mrs. B.H. Brandon PICKLED EGGS Dear Heloise: My husband loves pickled eggs. I save the juice from the jar of pickles after the last one is eaten. The spices and all the necessary seasoning is there and the liquid is already aged. I hard-boil five or six eggs, then place them in cold water to cool off and to make peeling them easier. After peeling, I put the whole eggs into the pickle jar with the juice, close the cap tightly, then give the jar a little shake and refrigerate. I,et the eggs stand eight to 12 hours. The same pickle juice can be used several times over. The eggs are especially delicious when using kosher pickle juice. Helen Szewzek SECURITY TRICKS Dear Heloise: This summer a lot of us will be traveling and staying in various motels and hotels. With the rash of break-ins they have been experiencing this past year, it’s wise to take some precautions yourself. There are traveling burglar alarms that can be hung on the doorknob at night. If your budget is limited, you can push a chair under the doorknob and this will help prevent the door from being opened. When we leave our hotel room, we always put the “do-not-disturb” sign on the outside of the door and leave the TV on low in our room. Also, we do not leave valuables in our room. If you are not using them, the hotel will let you place them in its safe. A Reader CLEANING MUSHROOMS Dear Heloise: While helping prepare a dinner for 300,1 learned a way to clean fresh mushrooms which is marvelous. Add three to four tablespoons flour to a medium-sized bowl of cold water. Wash the mushrooms in the water. The dirt adheres to the flour particles almost like magic. The mushrooms come out very clean. Carol Kesteloot
