People in the news Captain leaving Treasure House NEW YORK ( AP) Bob Keeshan, who for nearly 30 years entertained children as kind-hearted “Captain Kangaroo,” will close the curtain on the award-winning program in December Keeshan will continue on CBS with a new show, “Storybreak,” starting in January, the network said Tuesday. Keeshan, who created the clown Clarabelle on the “Howdy Doody” show, launched “Captain Kangaroo” on Oct. 3,1955. “Storybreak,” a Saturday afternoon series, will try to motivate children to read by presenting original adaptations of literature.
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) Sybil Carter, the wife of former first brother Billy Carter, balked when a doctor told her she needed treatment for alcoholism as badly as her husband, but she discovered “counseling was the most important thing to happen in my life.” Five years later, she is promoting a drug and alcohol program at Union Pacific railroad designed to encourage railroad offenders to seek help without fear of punishment. “I can’t tell you how much good counseling does. Do not leave the families out,” she told a group of Union Pacific representatives Tuesday. Mrs. Carter said her husband has also been sober five years. “Billy still cusses a lot, but he doesn’t drink anymore,” she said.
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) Game show host Peter Marshall, whose “Fantasy” program brought people together when they least expected it, didn’t need a name tag when he attended a reunion of his own. Classmates from the Huntington High School Class of 1944 remember Marshall with a different last name, Lacock, but they'had no trouble recognizing the celebrity Saturday at a local hotel. After leaving the television show “The Hollywood Squares,” Marshall co-hosted an afternoon show called “Fantasy,” which often arranged surprise reunions of longseparated loved ones or fulfilled participants’ one big wish. Marshall said he was happy to receive the attention, but he was happier to see old friends. “We’ve kept in touch over the years and they are happy to see Pete Lacock like they are happy to see everybody else. I don’t think I’m the center of attention,” he said.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (AP) The good news for Reggie Jackson is that police have located the baseball slugger’s missing Porsche 930. The bad news is that the $65,000 car was stripped and cut in three pieces. The California Angels outfielder’s customized car was stolen June 13 from outside a Newport Beach restaurant where Jackson was having dinner. It was found Tuesday in an industrial park. “It was completely stripped,” said Fountain Valley police Capt. Bill Denisi. “It was cut into three pieces, covered with oil, and was a mess.” • WASHINGTON (AP) Larry Flynt, the flambouyant publisher of the sexually explicit magazine Hustler, must stand trial on charges stemming from an incident in which he shouted obscenities at the U.S. Supreme Court. U.S. Magistrate Jean S. Dwyer ruled Tuesday that Flynt is competent to stand trial starting July 5 on obscenity and obstructing justice charges. Flynt was arrested last November on charges he shouted obscenities at the Supreme Court justices while they were hearing arguments in a libel suit. Flyn* faces a maximum of one year in prison and a $5,000 fine, or both, on the obstruction of justice charge and 60 days and a SIOO fine on the obscenities charge. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Two teen-agers who pleaded guilty to robbing the home of actress Penny Marshall of television's “Laverne and Shirley” face up to seven years in jail for the incident in which they threatened the actress with ancient Japanese weapons. Anthony Pierson, 18, and Daniel Sheppard, 19, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count each of robbery. Sheppard also pleaded guilty to an allegation he used a nunchunkas, an outlawed Japanese weapon comprising two pieces of wood fastened at their ends by a chain, during the March 13 robbery. They were ordered to return for sentencing Aug. 13.
