need to know ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - It’s a big jump from high school to college, and many college freshmen are likely to say “I wish I’d known that before I came.” With this in mind, some University of Rochester freshmen were asked what they wished thev’d known before coming to Rochester. The biggest response, even among top students, was “how to

One student advised mgn school students to take a college course at night or during tne summer before entering college “to prepare you for being in a group of your intellectual equals.”
Dear Abby Mobile Army wife has learned to 'grin, bear it'
DEAR ABBY: The letter from “Unhappy in Minnesota,” the woman who was so upset about the moving required by her husband’s job, really struck a nerve with me. It’s a good thing she didn’t marry a career Army man (or Navy, Air Force or Marine, for that matter)! My husband is a career soldier. I’ve always joked that we’ve stayed married so long because he was never home long enough to fight with. In 15 years, we’ve moved 11 times. Four of these moves were transAtlantic moves, and he was around to help with only one of them. Our daughter went to three different kindergartens, four elementary schools, two middle schools, and she will attend at least two different high schools. ( Not unusual for Army families.) While I’m never thrilled with the thought of another move, I’ve learned a lot from all the moves we’ve made. I turned the negatives into positives. Rule 1: Laugh a lot. No humorist could possibly invent stories as funny as the ones we’ve experienced. Besides, moving a lot keeps your closets cleaned out. Rule 2: Don’t view it as “leaving,” view it as “going to.” We have a lifetime filled with friends and
Hints from Heloise
Inexpensive dishes take worry out of returning treasures
DEAR HELOISE: When I go to garage sales or flea markets, I look for inexpensive and pretty dishes. I use these dishes when I give someone cookies, a cake, etc. so that they can keep the dish S.O. Hill * * * I like your idea. It solves problems for everyone. So many times you take a cake to a party and then have to worry about bringing your cake dish home. On the other hand, if you’re the one receiving a gift of food, you may have to worry about returning a dish. Your idea solves both problems. Heloise COOL SUNTAN LOTION Dear Heloise: This hint is something you’ll probably want to save until the hot summer. When you go boating or picnicking, put a bottle of suntan lotion in the cooler. It keeps the lotion a good consistency

experiences we never would have accumulated had we stayed put. Rule 3: Don’t wait for a new community to provide you with what you want. Get out and find it. If it’s not there, create it. No job in the community? Start your own business—a nursery school or babysitting service. And don’t turn your nose up at volunteer work. How about the shelter for battered women, the PTA, a political party, church work or even a car pool? It’s a good way to be accepted and welcome in a new community. Rule 4: Remember, “home” is an attitude. Wherever we are together is “home.” My attitude sets the tone of every move. If I am enthusiastic, my family will be. A positive attitude is not always easy to assume, but it’s a must. How are my children doing? Both are straight-A students, our house overflows with their friends, and a list of their combined activities would fill another page. My marriage? Terrific! So tell “Unhappy” to get it together. She’s not alone. Nobody claims that moving a lot is easy, but it can be fantastically rewarding. NANCY E„ ARMY WIFE, FORT HOOD, TEXAS DEAR NANCY: Thanks for a
for maximum coverage. Also it is cooling when applied to the skin. R.P.M. ★ * * I bet that cool lotion feels good on your hot skin. Heloise CAMPFIRE SAFETY Dear Heloise: Camping season is here again and I would like to tell you how you can avoid starting a forest fire with your campfire. We always take baking soda along with us on our trips. When we finish with the fire, we pour handfuls of baking soda on the fire to smother the flames. Before we leave the campsite, we pour water on the fire. You would be surprised how the embers can start burning again even though you think the fire is out. The baking soda is an added precaution. We want our forests to last for a long time so our children can enjoy the outdoors as
much as we have. Roma Phillips ★ * * I hope everyone is as cautious as you. Heloise CAST ON ARM Dear Heloise: A heavy cast for a broken wrist made it impossible for me to button my long-sleeved blouse cuffs. I threaded a small rubber band through the buttonhole and back through the loop (chainstitch fashion), then over the button it went, leaving only a small gap. Easy to use and remove. This also might work for favorite slacks and skirts that are just a little too tight to button comfortably. Edith H. Ortlief SQUEEZE BOTTLES Dear Heloise: lotions packed in plastic squeeze bottles are easy to use while fairly full. After a third is used, however, you wait forever and ever for the lotion to ooze out. If the bottle has a flat top, stand it on its cap and the lotion will always be ready to ooze out when the bottle is squeezed. Rene Valero ORGANIZED KNITTER Dear Heloise: Rinse out an empty plastic two-liter soda bottle and drain. Cut about three inches off the bottom of the bottle and wipe the inside dry with a paper towel. Insert yarn in the bottle, pulling the center strand of the yarn up through the neck of the bottle. Fit the cut bottom back on the bottle and tape the halves together. I keep each color yarn in a bottle. When I knit, the thread is pulled from the neck strand and it keeps it from tangling and getting soiled. Pat A. Hawkins NEW START FOR TAPE Dear Heloise: How in the world can one find the end of transparent tape after it has adhered to itself? I have sue rolls of stucktogether tape in a drawer. Mrs. Charlie Baxter ★ ★ * This hint may salvage all six rolls. Just drop the entire roll

Your husband is lucky, and so are your children. * * * CONFIDENTIAL TO ONLY ONE PERSON IN WORCESTER, MASS.: I am reminded of a short but meaningful poem from the play, “For Heaven’s Sake” by Helen Kromer: One man awake Can awaken another. The second can waken his next-door brother. The three awake can rouse the town, By turning the whole place upside down. And the many awake, make such a fuss, They finally awaken the rest of us. One man up with the dawn in his eyes—multiplies. * * * (If you put off writing letters because you don’t know what to say, send for Abby’s complete booklet on letter-writing. Heloise DEAR FRIENDS: How many times have I told you of the wonders of baking soda? And how often, when you’ve asked me for information on cleaning, storing or saving something, or what to use if you run out of a certain product, has my answer involved baking soda? The Arm and Hammer people have put it together with all kinds of wonderful and useful information you can use, and it’s yours for free.
