CASE H-994: Rachel A., age 27, is a lovely girl in New York City. “Dr. Crane,” she wrote, “I have been registered with the Scientific Marriage Foundation for 6 months, yet have never been introduced to any man. “Surely in New York there must be 1,000 single men of my age bracket, so why haven’t I met any yet?” COMPUTER PROBLEMS Earlier this week I told you of the use of the IBM computer to match people who are congenial on 10 basic attributes. So I asked the Director of the SMF to let me see Rachel’s Application Questionnaire. Thereon she had mentioned that she smoked and used liquor and was s’B” tall. So I told her that if we set the dial on the computer just at “cigarette use”, 90% of our male Applicants either forbid us to waste their time with a girl who smokes, so her 1,000 males in New York, of her age bracket, would instantly drop to 100. And if we also set another diai with reference to height, that could eliminate 50 more men from her original 1,000. Now, with just 2 dial settings on the IBM, her 1,000 single men is reduced to just 50. And if we also set dials for “hobbies”, similar “educational level”, etc. her 1,000

men might be entirely gone before we exhausted all 10 vital similarities between her and a prospective date. Another problem of the SMF (and all dating organizations) is the fact that there are about 12,000,000 unmarried women to 8,000,000 unmarried men seeking to be matched. Alas, too, men are more sluggish about seeking dates when they are in the early 20s, and by age 50 many of them are dead, so the preponderance of women is greater in the 20s but doubles that of men the age over 45. The SMF is grieved at so many splendid women on the roster when we haven’t enough men to go around. But our 10,000 successes buoy up the staff at the Home Office, for all are happy when they see such results • Matching of couples by the SMF adds a little extra mystery and excitement to the romance, for both don’t see our Home Office files and thus haven’t viewed pictures of one another. We leave that exchange of photos for them to include in their initial exchange of lptfprs Send for the “SMF Questionnaire”, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25*. (Always write to Dr Crane. Hopkins Bldg , Mellott. Indiana 47958. enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 254 to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.)
