People in the news Is Spock dead or Nimoy lying? “I’m calling it death, dead, finished he’s in the box! said Leonard Nimoy about Spock. the much-beloved Vulcan he plays in the Star Trek series. Nimoy confirmed that Spock did indeed die at the end of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” And he added that it would be “a nasty cheat” if that ending turned out to be a trick and if the character were easily resurrected. So does that mean that Spock is gone for all time? Or that Nimoy will not appear in the coming “Star Trek” sequel, which opens next Friday? “Well, look, we’re calling the picture “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock,” Nimoy said. “If we had Captain Kirk turn to the camera at the end of the picture and say ‘Sorry, we didn’t find him,’ people would throw rocks at the screen.” As the director of the new film, Nimoy also recognizes the possible repercussions of a downbeat “Star Trek” story. He remembers being in Peking at the time of “Star Trek II” and reading a front-page story in The Wall Street Journal about the adverse effect Spock’s death would have on business. Nimoy calls the “Star Trek” series “cult-producing but also thought-provoking.” “It’s not simply an escapist vehicle,” he says, “We always tried to include provocative ideas about science, social issues, philosophy and communications between groups of people.” • ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Walter Cronkite, perhaps television journalism’s best known college dropout, says he “found formal education particularly ungratifying” and that “watching my children has convinced me that not much has changed over the years.” Cronkite’s comments Thursday came as he received an honorary degree during a two-day celebration of the 200th anniversary of the University of the State of New York, an umbrella organization which oversees the state’s private and public colleges, elementary and secondary schools. A college dropout “with a long string of failed courses behind me,” Cronkite said part of the problem with the American education system was a lack of inspiring teachers. He said that was due, in large part, to low salaries. • WASHINGTON (AP) The Federal Communications Commission ruled that television personality Phil Donahue’s talk show qualifies as a “bona fide news interview” program under the equal time law. Thursday’s ruling, which reverses a string of decisions dating to 1980, means Donahue may invite political candidates to appear on his program without worrying about according equal time to all opposing candidates. Penny Rotheiser, the show’s press manager, said “Phil has long felt all along that if a program like ‘Good Morning America’ can win this news exemption, there’s no reason to deny it to him. He does at least as much that’s newsworthy as they do.” “Donahue” is a syndicated talk show produced by Multimedia Entertainment Inc.

LEONARD NIMOY 'A nasty cheat'?

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) Actor Dudley Moore, who starred as the tipsy title character in “Arthur,” took the witness stand for the prosecution in the manslaughter trial of a man accused of drunken driving. Moore described Thursday how his own car was rearended July 19 on the Santa Monica Freeway in a wreck that claimed the life of 21-year-old David Reuther, who was a passenger in the other car. Reuther’s friend, Steven Elliot Sanders, 21, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injuries to another person, driving with more than 0.10 percent blood alcohol and vehicular manslaughter, all felonies, said Deputy District Attorney Debra Starr. “The man lost his best friend,” Moore said after testifying. “It’s really sad that he has to go through this on top of that.” Although Moore suffered a slight neck strain in the accident, he said he will not sue Sanders. The defense contends that Reuther, not Sanders, was at the wheel at the time of the accident. • PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) Former first lady Betty Ford, who fought a battle with breast cancer, sent a videotape to court to testify that she never used a controversial cancer treatment and did not authorize use of her name in connection with the product. Mrs. Ford’s six-minute videotaped testimony was presented Thursday to jurors in the Maricopa County Superior Court trial of Kenneth Lee Anderson, 39, who is charged with conspiracy, fraud and practicing medicine without a license. Prosecutors said Anderson and Dr. Robert Wickman were selling “nothing more than hope” when they sold Tumorex in $3,500 programs as a cure for cancer, promising a 98 percent success rate. Anderson referred patients to Wickman for Tumorex treatment, and Wickman told the patients that Mrs. Ford had successfully used Tumorex, prosecutors said. Wickman is awaiting trial. Anderson, who described himself as a nutrition consultant, has said he will call witnesses who have been helped by Tumorex, which he contends is a food substance rather than a drug. Tumorex is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. In the testimony taped at her home in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Mrs. Ford said she had never before heard of Tumorex, Wickman or Anderson.
