People in the news IMo 'beef' over 1984 Clio winner NEW \ ORK (AP) Where’s the award? It’s with 82-year-old Clara Peller, winner of the 1984 Clio Award for best female performance in a TV commercial. The commercial for Wendy’s hamburger chain, in which Mrs. Peller growls, “Where’s the beef?”, was honored as the year s funniest during ceremonies Wednesday night at Radio City Music Hall. Eight-five television commercials from around the world were cited at the 25th annual Clio ceremony. Awards are also presented for radio and print advertising. The Wendy’s ad has been shelved after company officials decided it had been seen enough. Other major Clio winners were Chuck McCann, best actor in a commercial for his work as the hunchback in a Dr. Pepper soft drink ad, and former Pittsburgh Steelers star “Mean Joe” Greene, whose Coca-Cola commercial was named to the Clio Hall of Fame. For the fourth straight year, the Ally & Gargano agency of New York, which produced commercials for Federal Express and MCI Telecommunications, won the most Clios. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Burt Reynolds has returned to work on a new movie with Clint Eastwood after suffering a painful bout with a kidney stone, a spokesman said. “He’s still a little sore, but he’s feeling an awful lot better," David Gershenson said Wednesday. “It appears he’s passed the stone.” Reynolds, who was stricken Saturday in his Fort Lauderdale, Fla., hotel room, returned to work Tuesday on the Burbank set of the movie “City Heat,” Gershenson said. On Monday, the 48-year-oid actor received medication to dissolve the kidney stone and did not require hospitalization. • HOUSTON (AP) Anne Morrow Lindbergh, widow of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, made a rare public appearance at a dinner to honor 10 American scientists and researchers awarded grants by the Charles A. Lindbergh Fund. The Lindbergh Fund has awarded grants annually since 1977 to people whose work reflects Lindbergh’s philosophy that “the human future depends on our ability to combine the knowledge of science with the wisdom of the wildness.” The amount of each grant, up to $10,580, reflects the cost of Lindbergh’s plane, “The Spirit of St. Louis,” when it was built in 1927, the year he made history with his solo flight across the Atlantic. • PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) A judge who ordered an autopsy report on David Kennedy to be made public said the disclosure of its contents should not hamper the police investigation into Kennedy’s death. “It would seem to me that the ongoing investigation need not and would not be hampered by the release of the autopsy report,” Circuit Judge R. William Rutter Jr. said after an hour-long hearing Wednesday. Rutter gave authorities until 5 p.m. today to release the report, but Assistant State Attorney Frank Stockton said his office may appeal the order.

JAMES MASON Dislikes movie 'mush'
LONDON (AP) James Mason, the debonair British actor with more than 50 years in the business, says the bulk of modern films are “mush.” “People are getting used to soap operas and that is all they are getting all the time. I feel quite depressed about it all,” Mason said Wednesday at London’s Heathrow Airport before traveling to his villa in Switzerland. Mason, 75, who has starred in dozens of plays and movies including “Lolita,” “The Verdict” and “The Boys From Brazil” since his professional debut in 1931, said he has played in five new films and TV shows in Britain this year. “They’re all very good,” he said. “I just wish I could say the same about everything else around at the moment. “I hanker after the old days when they really knew how to make films,” he added. • LOS ANGELES (AP) John Marley, a veteran character actor who attained prominence late in his career in such films as “Love Story,” “The Godfather” and “Faces,” died Tuesday following heart surgery. He was 76. Marley’s first acting jobs were on Broadway and in a 1941 experimental film, “The Native Land.” His other film credits included “I Want to Live,” "W.C. Fields and Me,” “Hooper,” “Threshold” and “Tribute.” • HARTFORD, Conn. The orchestra is the foundation’s performing arm Dressed in a black-and-silver sequined gown. Miss Andrews drew warm applause when she appeared on stage to perform a repertoire including selections from her musicals “The Sound of Music,” “Camelot" and “My Fair Lady,” as well as a medley of Gershwin songs “When he (Elliott) asked me to join him in this special event I was only too happy to help,” Miss Andrews said.
