Varying success in adaptations

Fashion trend for fall: Men's clothes for women

By BERNADINE MORRIS c. 1984 N.Y. Times NEW YORK Not since the days of Courreges and the miniskirt has an idea taken such a firm hold on the fashion world. The idea for fall and winter is men’s clothes for women, and it looks like one whose time has come. It emerged full blown in the collection of Calvin Klein early in the week, and subsequent showings have proved how suitable it is for sportswear today, forceful. Designers have adapted the men’s concept in different ways, with varying success. But it is quite clear that the essential fashion for the cool-weather months is a big coat with broad shoulders, one that resembles a man’s overcoat.

Ralph Lauren has his share of these coats, some of them more slender and graceful than most of the genre. There is a gentle quality to Lauren’s styles, signaled by the antique diamante pins and the lace edges on the sweaters, another übiquitous contemporary fashion. Still, his jackets are oversize, his trousers cuffed, like anyone else’s. Instead of leather belts, he frequently threads a self sash through the loops at the waistline of his pants. And, another softening touch, he pairs sturdy jackets in patterned men’s wear worsteds or tweeds with flowing velvet skirts. Fair Isle sweaters over white silk or linen shirts and velvet skirts make another gentle combination.

When skirts are shown, they are draped to one side or in paisley-patterned woolens and are long enough almost to cover the boots. Lauren’s jump suits are particularly fine in chalk-striped woolens or gabardine and are shown under cashmere trench coats and over simple cashmere sweaters. While still in the men’s wear category, they offer a different way of putting the look together. Black velvet takes over for evening in fur-collared coats, smoking jackets with satinstriped wool pants and trousers with lace-collared sweaters, thereby extending the men’s look into the night. John Anthony places a crisper edge on his tailored suits and offers an alternative

Extra precautions help insure driver's personal safety at night

NEW YORK (AP) - A car pulls up alongside and its occupant signals the lone driver over to the side of the road, indicating there’s a problem with the car. Emerging to investigate, the driver becomes the victim of a mugging, robbery or worse. If you’re driving at night, there are precautions you should take, advise experts at the Carter Automotive Division of ACF Industries, who offer these suggestions to drivers, especially women. Don’t stop without first checking. Is your car steering abnormally, are there unusual smells, strange noises from the engine or

to the big, square-shouldered coat with seven-eighths-length styles that look fine with pants. His superb tailoring shows up best in double-breasted suits that follow the body and look trim, not oversize. His best evening clothes elaborate on the tailored look, with jackets covered with beads or sequins. An occasional beadembroidered or chiffon shirt under a tailored jacket provides a discreet use of glitter and a devastating look for evening on the right woman. Gloria Sachs has a special way with blazers and big coats, to keep the men’s wear franchise. But her box-pleated skirts and her long sweaters are her individual touch. They have a long, sleek, easy look that should make almost any body

beneath the car, smoke visible around the hood or from the rear view mirror? Car manufacturers have equipped dashboards with built-in warning signals to let you know when your car is in trouble. If you have no clear indication that something is wrong, ignore the passerby. Wave your thanks and drive cautiously to the nearest service station. If you do stop, keep car doors and windows locked. In the city, steer your car into a well lighted area. In the country, try to get to an intersection or well-trafficked part of the road. Should the motorist stop, only lower the window far enough to ask him to phone for help. If he wants to help, he’ll do it. If not, you have him safely locked out. Equip your car with a highway emergency kit, including a flashlight, flares and heavy-duty jumper cables. Depending on where you live, you' may want to add a few items to cope with weather conditions. A shovel and some old rags take up little trunk space and can be a blessing if you’re stuck in mud or a snowdrift. Prevention is the best insurance against an actual car breakdown that could invite criminal attack, say the Carter experts. A once-a-year tuneup is a must. Check your gas supply before you drive. Don’t take a chance on a near-empty tank. Women who frequently travel

look more willowy than it is. Foulard pattern silk blouses and paisley skirts, both in muted colors, are a Sachs specialty. She manages to transmute these classic patterns for men’s ties into soft, interesting women’s fashions. Gold lame is her basic evening fabric, paired with black velvet. A velvet bathrobe coat over lame pajamas and a velvet jacket with checked lame box-pleated skirt and a lame blouse in a herringbone pattern are two bright but tailored evening outfits. Perry Ellis dedicated a large portion of his collection to Sonia Delaunay, the French abstract painter who flourished before World War I and who died at the age of 94 in 1979. In the 1920 s she designed fabrics, dresses and

alone at night should consider purchasing an emergency CB radio. Take care and be alert when stopped at an intersection. If the window is open or the door unlocked and you are lost in thought, you could be victimized. Try to park as close to the entrance of a building as possible and only patronize garages that are well lighted and have 24-hour attendants. Always check a car carefully before getting in to avoid being surprised by someone hiding in the back. If you are driving alone and suspect you are being followed or if you are forced off the road or into the curb, use your horn to attract attention. If you do go off the road, throw the car in reverse and try to zigzag away from the other car and continue until you reach a more populated area. Know where your car’s emergency signals are located and how to turn them on. If you’re caught in a crisis, immediately hit the switch usually marked “Hazard” that converts a car’s turn signals into four-way flashers. It’s a way to let other drivers know that you need help. Big Bend National Park, located in southwestern Texas, is one of the largest national parks outside Alaska. Its 1,141 square miles include Emory Peak, whose summit is 7.825 feet high.

I would also like to welcome the people of my opponent to the task before us and will be looking forward to the race this fall. My goal is that all the people of Putnam County can travel between areas and be proud of our road system.

even household objects, believing that art shoald be related to the rest of life. Her signature circles and other abstract shapes, adapted to clothes today, have a been-here-before look, just as Mondrian’s rectangles do today. Tunics with targets, stripes and bands of color, over short skirts, are reminiscent of Rudi Gernreich’s knitted clothes in the 19605. Some longer, somber styles have echoes that go even further back. Evening dresses with zigzag bands and diamond shapes embroidered in different color beads through the skirt have a strong Art Deco feeling. All this is in contrast to the lively casual clothes usually associated with Ellis. These have happily not disappeared. There are the big mannish coats, the fingertip-length plaid jackets, long sweaters and knitted dresses to provide a change of pace. They are different from the way they used to look, but that’s what fashion is all about. For example, some of the knitted dresses, very minimal in design, rely only on a different stitch on the yoke or sleeve and an occasional pocket for decoration. Silk blouses in patchy prints related to Delaunay accompany long jumper dresses, some of which have a Norfolk jacket look. Deep cloche hats, shaped fur stoles made of fitch or sable paws and a big silvery raccoon coat reaching almost to the floor recall other eras of fashion, especially the 19205. Color television marks 30th year 1984 marks the 30th anniversary of the production of color television receivers. The first sets off the line at RCA’s Bloomington, Ind , plant in 1954 were 15-inch color sets and carried a suggested retail price of SI,OOO. The average cost of a color TV today is $585. During the first full year of color TV production only 35,000 sets were sold industrywide. In 1984, the color TV industry is expected to sell 14.5 million units, or 3 million more receivers than it sold in 1982.
