Capt. James T. Kirk 'still crazy after all these years'?

ByBOBWISEHART JM9&I N.Y. Times News Service .NEW YORK -■•After all these years, if Jim ir was still just a captain,” scoffs William Shatner, “he’d be an idiot.” A good point but who’d want to see a movie a ut a desk jockey of the future, even a highranking desk jockey? So every couple of years writers come up with a way to put Shatner’s James T. Kirk, now a middle-aged admiral, back at the helm of the starship Enterprise. This allows Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and company once more “to boldly go where no man has gone before.” Kirk next swings into action on June 1, with the release of “Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.” For Shatner, each “Star Trek” adventure starts with the same ceremony, when he shaves his sideburns. Fashion three centuries hence says that pointy sideburns are a must. “It really is a ceremony, too,” says Shatner. It looms very large in my mind and probably seems ridiculous. But it represents something in my life that goes back almost 20 years now (the “Star Trek” series began in 1966).

“Everytime I do it,” he explains, “I always think, ‘Well, is this the last time?’” Shatner divulges nothing about “The Search for Spock” during a telephone interview from Los Angeles. When last we left the formidable Vulcan in “The Wrath of Khan,” he was dead and in his coffin on a newly created planet. But the ending was deliberately ambiguous. So, as Shatner teases, “anything is possible.” Leonard Nimoy, who plays the Vulcan, directed “The Search For Spock.” Pressed for detail, any detail, Shatner replies, “You wouldn’t want me to spoil it for you, would you?” Spoil away. Like millions of other people, I’ve seen all the “Star Trek” episodes many times, which doesn’t make them any less pleasurable when I watch them again. For the same reason, a revelation or two about “The Search For Spock” wouldn’t have mattered, but Shatner spills not one bean. Ironically, the actor says he joins the crowd and watches the old “Star Trek” episodes when it’s convenient. Unlike the rest of us, they’re new to him. “My mind is such that I’m a quick study (he

learns his lines fast and easily), but immediately forget it once I’ve finished. Most of the time, I don’t remember how the show turns out. It’s like I’m watching somebody else.” When he’s not zipping around the universe, Shatner’s regular day job is as star of “T.J. Hooker,” a mediocre but popular Saturday night series about a tough-guy cop. He also has a TV movie in the works, “Confessions of A Married Man,” where he choses between wife (Michelle Phillips) and mistress (Cybill Shepherd). As Shatner cracks, “We should all have to make such choices.” A TV actor most of his career, Shatner has been involved in a large slice of small screen history. Besides “Star Trek” and “Hooker,” he had two other briefly lived series, “For the People” in 1965 and “The Barbary Coast” 10 years later. He also had first crack at a starring role in “The Defenders” (1961-65), one of the best series ever. The story of a father and son law firm (E.G. Marshall and Robert Reed) was based on an episode in the “Studio One” TV anthology in 1957. Ralph Bellamy was the father

and Shatner the son. They defended an un pleasant young thug played by Steve McQueen. “They were after me to do the series, too,” he says. “But at that time, the feeling was that if you were a serious actor you didn’t do TV series. I should have known better when they got Marshall and later on I kicked myself in the fanny for not taking it. “On the other hand, if I had, there would have been no ‘Star Trek’ for me. I was lucky there, too. Jeffrey Hunter was the captain in the pilot. They reshot it when it didn’t sell, but by then Hunter was committed to something else, so they came to me.” A few years after missing the boat on “The Defenders,” Shatner appeared in one of the best-known “Twilight Zone” episodes, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” as a newly-recovered mental patient who can’t convince anyone he sees a gremlin destroying the wing of the airliner. It was redone with John Lithgow in “Twilight Zone The Movie.” “This is a strange, circular business I’m in,” muses Shatner. “When you look back, everything seems linked to everything else, even if we don’t know it at the time. ’ ’
